i have one at home.

unfortunately it has an issue with hypptv. i dont know whether it just me, or someone else also facing the same problem.

it will buffering for like 1 minute or more before u could watch the channel, or most of the time u will get no signal error.

definitely not misconfiguration by me. i've tried both the wizard and manual setup, still getting the same output.

This router is amazing. The interface fixes a lot of issues I've had with Router-web-based interfaces, and the range is incredible. It covers an entire 80 yard area with several buildings. If you're lookin' for a high-power router, this is the one, ladies and gents...can say"win liao lor"XD

Basic set up was very simple, just plug it in and the default settings will get you half way there. The other half is just a matter of logging into the browser based configuration utility and picking a new name and password for your WiFi network (cool kids never use a default WiFi name). If you've ever set up a router you won't have a problem with this upgrade, I was able to completely set one up via my Nexus 4 smartphone (it was a little more work that way). If this is your first, then you'll need to rely a little more heavily on the instructions, and a hardwired connection is always recomended for configuration (using wireless means you will be disconnected from the router and have to log back in with the new settings every time you apply a settings change). rclxm9.gif rclxm9.gif

2 year warranty a little better than most. It’s small and silent. Price seems a little high for such a low end device, but I guess that’s fair. My D-link and Linksys are much faster in wireless and wired speeds. It seems pretty solid and I haven’t noticed any dropouts nor need to reboot it ever. That’s good. All in all it’s a solid average router. I personally can’t live without gigabit ports, but that’s just me.

tp-link xxxHP series is stand for HIGH POWER, and it refers to the machine's wireless transmission power, rated by mW (miliwatt) or watt.

Antenna is another thing, rated by gain (dbi). so 'high power' and 'high gain' basically 2 things. last time most home router with 100mW (0.1watt) only then pair with high gain antenna 5dbi to 9dbi max (the limit reached for indoor antenna). Thus product always labelled with wording of 'high gain', not using the term 'high power'.

early 841hp version is rated at 800mW (0.8watt), the newer version should be at 1000mW (1watt) same as asus.

The TP-LINK TL-WR841HP (I'll call it the “HP”) router is a small router --- the size of a paperback book --- with sleek lines, and thankfully, no bright LEDs. It's surprising how much of a treat this is in wireless routers, since ergonomics are often forgotten completely. It's not the first TP-Link router I've applauded for this reason. The router also features four LAN ports, a reset button (not recessed), and a sideways AC adapter that won't block outlets on normal power strips. All good features for the normal home user...

Yes, one major issue of this router is the IP QoS. Doesn't seems working. Well, go browse through several TP link forum and I've flood them with this question (We're not the only one worldwide). If you're wondering, there's a latest firmware that overcome this issue, but certainly can't get it work with Unifi. Here's the list of firmware I've tried.

1) TL-WR841HP_V1_140214(Unifi&Maxis Fiber) - stock, no issue just have problem with IP QoS
2) wr841hpv1_en_3_15_2_up_boot(150519) - from tplink website, got issue with Unifi
3) wr841hpv1_en_3_15_2_up_boot(141208)_beta - from support (email), got issue in setting up unifi (this is the one that solve the bandwidth control issue) at least user's from other country, not using crappy unifi ofc
4) wr841hpv1_en_3_15_2_up_boot(141116) - from tplink.my website, crappy firmware that cause severe hypptv stuttering and wifi not working on the next day

Despite good coverage, I tend to get major hiccup when pinging the router, may go p to 1k ms sometimes.
Contacted the tp link support and ask she me to gather this and that data. FGS, got get us a latest firmware that has IP QoS working properly and compatible with unifi!!

damn dulan, now like experimental router pulak. anyone have problem on the button of the stock firmware interface? it kept shifting to the left when u hover over it right?

BTW, the toll free number not working, isn't it? I couldn't reach them verbally.

I agree.. this is one of the crappy router they produced rclxub.gif .
with original firmware or latest beta, both having problem with wifi, either :
1. cant connect at all
2. can connect but no data
3. can connect, ping to router random from 200ms to 1k++ ms..

contacted the support before via website, and they only ask to use the latest beta firmware.

conclusion so far : do not buy, good coverage come with crappy firmware. no alternative firmware can be installed in this router.

I recently got this TP-Link WR841HP with 2x 8dBi antenna. Hardware version is 1.0 with the latest firmware that is non-Beta.
I got it for cheap with coupon so I can't complaint much but if you want a user-friendly and good Web UI, go for the ASUS RT-N12HP. I am not a novice to networking and routers but I find it not user-friendly.

I am not using UniFi/ Maxis IPTV.

Pros:
I got it cheap.
8dBi antenna.
Antenna power amplifier.

Cons:
Web UI is not as user friendly and advance as ASUS RT-N12HP.
Noise level seems higher compared to ASUS.
A bit warm.
No Guest AP.
No Network Monitor.

just to share, i flashed one the newest firmware from tplink malaysia website and on hypptv did the re-enter channel number but turned out black only. I left it like that while searching for a fix then suddenly the channel working even if i change channel. wireless performance also good. been testing for one hour only la, I'll update if anything goes wrong

i'm using the v1 router on this firmware

If put 9dbi antenna work or not?

technically,

8dbi antenna is 7.x dbi effect (seven point sth)
9dbi antenna is 8.x dbi effect (eight point sth)
no sharp 8dbi or 9dbi

for omni-directional type antenna, higher dbi means wider horizontal line coverage size
their coverage model is a donut shape, not a ball shape. higher dbi means the donut will get flatter. (from a donut turn into a pizza...)

to see obvious difference, the gap should be at least 3dbi... e.g jump from 5dbi to 9dbi
8dbi to 9dbi seems no major overhaul, but should have little gain at further distance spot

Hi guys, so I got this router a few months back and everything has been working fine (including hypptv) since day 1 but there are times when the WiFI seems to be connected but I can't use the internet at all. Stuck at loading pages, video streams very slowly, cant get a proper reading from speedtest.net etc etc

The rest is perfect, hypptv was easy to setup, never had issues with my computers connected through LAN cable. Only the WiFi which is being difficult once every 1-2 weeks or so.

My questions is whether this is a common problem for this router or it's just that there are a lot of interference from other routers from nearby houses? i.e. we are broadcasting on the same channel, any way to find out on this?

Thanks!

what is the best firmware to use with this router?
Just got myself TL-WR841HP V1.2.

Currently I'm unable to get 30Mbps speed with wifi, but I can get 30Mbps consistently with LAN cable.
On wifi it is usually 18-20Mbps. Anyone had same problem?

Of course, if you plug the network cable into the hypptv box, it will only receive data from lan cable instead of using wifi. The port you use now is tagged with Vlan ID 600, which leads the hypptv directly connected to TM's hypptv department server. If you connect using wifi, the wifi is tagged with vlan id 500, which leads the hypptv box connect to the internet.

Vlan ID 500- for Internet use only
Vlan ID 600- for HyppTV use only
