1) Get a USB to RJ35 converter with USB 3 ports extension, you can direct connect using network cable from your router.
2) Get a 2.4Ghz wireless mouse with keyboard to help you navigate around.
++ to scroll, press OK while move the cursor down
++ some apps need to use keyboard to scroll
3) To extend your 8GB storage, get external USB and make it as internal storage
4) Side load/install the X-plore or ES Explorer apk (download to your USB)
5) There apps for different areas: live tv, drama, movies, sports, cartoon, player browser, ad block and not forget kodi.
6) Look into https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/3115619 for those apps you want to install, another way you can also google for it.

Note: You don't need all. Choose the particular suit to your need.

7) If you are Kodi fan, look into Kodi forum  https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/3943906

Side load = means download from your computer or mobile, copy to your USB and plug into your mi box, and from there install the apk

Other information:
- Mi Box will auto update itself even though you did not select it. It will reboot after finished.
- After latest update, the shutdown selection is missing. The shutdown is replace with sleep mode when you shutdown your TV.
- Set resolution to 1080 (for my case)
- You need extra storage extension, if you need to play games. I am not game fan, I don't need yet. May be when I start to get bored with movies.
- Educate them on those apps eg. movies, drama: some may be unsuitable for them. Don't spoil your children.
- You need good internet speed at least 4MB and above.
- Do not be over expectation, free apps come with ads, also some site are slow and performance is not that you expected.
- As I know some China site cannot be access without VPN,

Search the forum for more information.

Awesome tips! New user here. Just replaced my 2nd gen WD TV which was starting to have problems after 6 years.

Any compatibility issues with RJ45 to USB adapter? Any specific model/chipset to buy that is guaranteed to work?

Any issues with using Logitech Unifying receiver for both a mouse and keyboard?

Search for UGREEN in this forum. That's the brand I used. It works wonderfully.
I believe other brand can work if they have plug and play feature feature in the chipset.

Thanks again. I see from my search results that some people have experienced slower speed with LAN vs Wifi, possibly because of the limitation of USB 2.0. So I might just get the model without extra USB ports and use a Bluetooth keyboard instead, so as not to overload the single USB 2.0 port.

Anyone using their Mi Box with Logitech Harmony Hub? I finally had the time to add my Mi Box to my Harmony last night, and it has trouble turning the Mi Box off.

When I press the off button (on my Logitech remote), my TV and HT turn off correctly as normal. I also see the white light on the Mi Box blinking once, so I guess it received the signal, it just doesn't turn itself off.

Then when I turn on everything again, the white light on the Mi Box turns off for a while, then turns back on.

So functionally, I can use my Mi Box when I want to. It's just that I want to fix the power off if I can. I don't want it to die early just because I never turn it off.

Maybe you could try adding it as Nexus player?

Thanks, but I figured it out.

It's my TV's CEC. So the Harmony turns off my TV first, which turns off the Mi Box, and a split second later Harmony sends a power toggle to the Mi Box which turns it back on, hence the blinking white light. doh.gif

Set the Harmony to never turn off the Mi Box and all OK now.

gateway follow your router ip.
subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
*
Mi Box doesn't ask for subnet mask but network prefix. In this case 24 is correct. CIDR notation equivalent of 255.255.255.0

My search on garage, lazada or lelong is not really fruitful.

Just to update, I ended up getting this ethernet adapter:
https://www.lazada.com.my/ugreen-ethernet-a....60377c3fxGZbDK

Been using it a few weeks, and I find it IS slower than wifi. Suddenly when I watch Netflix in 1080p, there is lag in the middle of playback (not when starting a new video). I had no such problems on wifi. This was happening maybe 2-3 times a day for the past few weeks.

Now switched back to wifi, Netflix playback is smooth... doh.gif

I'm wondering anyone here tried the official Xiaomi USB to RJ45 converter and is it any better? Seems like such a waste to use wifi when I've wired my house with CAT6A...

I also use this ugreen.
I admit that sometime there will be a time that even netflix will froze for awhile.
Since, its not a major problem, then will give it more time for monitoring.

Im using unifi 30M though,

p/s: xiaomi official coverter doesnt had any extra usb right, just  pure converter?
*
Yes, no extra USB. Even the UGreen model that I bought also is without extra USB as I don't need it. I either stream from internet or stream from my NAS.

I do plan to get a Bluetooth keyboard, but don't know when coz so far the voice input is quite good.

Also getting mibox 3 from the same person in lazada store. Just got it last two days ago. Tried astro go, Kodi, spotify, plex, terranium, youtube, netflix. All works great with and without mouse assistance. tried using usb to ethernet for internet connection but found that the mibox running not smoothly. Then return back to using wireless connection (5Ghz wifi router). everything go smoothly now.

However, there are few things to highlight such as NO HDR in netflix, some 4k hdr mkv are not smoothly played in mibox3 using KODI, and No HDMI CEC support as well. Currently it still running on stock firmware, in spite of knowing got apk installation problem with the latest firmware.
*
Same experience with the USB Ethernet adapter. I'm also back on wifi 5GHz now. Someone else was saying on this thread that Xiaomi's own brand USB Ethernet adapter works well. Haven't bought it yet to try.

hv u try using DS video apps?
if i remember correctly, it got native apps in android TV.
can it show subtitle ?

also, how about Astro-on the go apps?

those 2 apps, i always running on my previous android box, need to know the performance of mi box before buy it.
*
Not on the MiBox. Tried it for a while on my tablet. Didn't like it. In the end I just play from ES File Explorer on my tablet.

So far Kodi is not giving me problems. It can play subtitles. It can even help you find subtitles if you don't have the file.

Don't use Astro. Only Netflix, Kodi, Youtube, Youtube Kids, and Vimeo.

Well, good to know there is an update available. Let's see if that solves the problem.

Reporting in! Updated to latest Oreo update and finally the USB to Ethernet dongle works fine! No low res or jitter in Netflix.

All this time I was dedicating my AP's 5GHz band for Mi Box, finally can use it for something else!

There are many that looks the same but function differently. Mine is able to do voice search and ALL buttons can be programmable in IR mode.

I the IR to control my TV, Amp and also the fan  rclxm9.gif

Side question, I see that it comes with a USB receiver. Is it a must to use it? Or can it use Bluetooth/Wifi?

Must use the USB receiver.

That USB receiver is running based on Wifi - a special wifi dedicated for remote keyboard/mouse/airmouse. It cannot use regular wifi/bluetooth.
*
Oh ok. Thanks.

Not for me then. I'm already using the single USB port for ethernet and USB 2.0 only has a theoretical max bandwidth of 480Mbps.
