"Xiaomi recently announced their latest Mi Box running on Android TV OS 6.0 at the Google I/O this year. Now the smart set-top box touting Android genetics has cleared FCC certifications thereby indicating at an imminent launch in US.

The exact launch date of the Xiaomi Mi Box isn’t known as of yet, but it is expected to go on sale in US by the middle of next month. As for pricing, Xiaomi is expected to mark it below $99. The original Mi Box powered by MIUI retails for around $75 via third party retailers in China. That said, the Xiaomi Mi Box with Android TV OS is reported to go on sale internationally soon after the US launch."

How was the nexus player for you. I wonder how the Android TV OS differs from Google Playstore

Basically the UI differs from even stock Android as its made for TV.
While for Playstore, the apps are limited to TV enabled apps mean most of the apps you want on your phone or tablet might not be available. Hhopefully more apps will make it to Android TV soon.

For instance, you do not have a FB for Android TV but you can still sideload any apks but it will not work correctly on TV as most of the interface will be horizontal coz you can't turn ur TV vertically.

But still there's plenty of apps available. I did install shafa guanjia and aptoide tv in my Nexus Player and installed lotsa china streaming apps and they worked fine. I mainly use it to stream china TV and playing some files from USB drives, so far so good.

I have also installed Iflix and Astro on The Go, working well and no issue with them.

Oh, thx for the lightning review. Yea hoping the new Mi Box to meet my requirements

So strange Xiaomi launch the latest Mi Box only in the US but not in their own market or other strong markets which use their other version of MiBoxes. No news of other country availability date also.

May be Android TV is not really ready for other markets as it's more to streaming for US based content. If you see the apps they pre-loaded in this version of Mibox.

I guess we will need to buy it online or something. Was just thinking to get another box beside my Nexus Player (already on Nougat). It's the same just that this mibox can play 4K. I guess this is the only pull for me.

Yeah, I agree that most of the apps preloaded or with offers are based in the US. But it doesnt make sense they only market it in the US. I suspect other regions may only get it January onwards after the US holiday sales.

No problem...but it seems that the new MiBox 3s just announced by XiaoMi are having the same specs as the US one...zzzzz dry.gif

Mibox 3s

Yeah, whats so different about this box and the International version? Same specs only. I suspect the artificial intelligence is the voice search depending on Google voice. But isn't Google Apps banned in China? Hmm.

Those getting the international version, worry not. Its basically the same box.

"Additionally, Mi Box 3s is also compatible with HDR content. Xiaomi has implemented an AI based PatchWall Interface to improve the content suggestions. The PatchWall Interface will track and analyze your viewing habits and improves the recommendations, so the more you use it, the better suggestions you will encounter."

I dont know what is the benefit of rooting the Mi Box. I thought it would allow me to delete the pre-installed apps and use a different launcher. Pre-installed apps that I deleted, returned after a reboot.

Finally received the international Mi Box today from Aliexpress. Exactly two weeks to ship from China. First impressions : Doesn't have the box cover like that sold in the US. No coupon codes at all. (US version comes with a total of $76 of coupons). 3 pieces of paper for warranty, manual and product info, all in English. Other items include the mi box, remote control and hdmi cable (no AAA batteries).

Boot up looks similar to that on youtube of Americans using the USA Mi Box. The biggest difference is there is only Netflix and Redbull TV on the recommended apps section. Mi Box sold in the US have Sling TV, Hulu, Pandora, Vudu and several other popular streaming apps in the recommended section.

The other Google apps like Android TV playstore, Youtube and Play Movies is preloaded.
Strangely cant control the audio on Netflix shows via the Mi Box remote. But on Youtube and SPMC it works. Must be a bug with the Netflix app.

In the settings, it shows Android 6.01 and no updates available. I tried installing UC Browser, Astro On The Go, Mobdro and APKpure but for some reason the screen orientation is horizontal. I installed a separate app to force the screen orientation correctly. So far never heard this bug from US Mi Box users.

The worst thing so far for me is that Astro On The Go keeps crashing after I input username and password.

I dont know why there is no browser pre-installed in this box. When I do a voice search, it will show hits from youtube. Would have wished the voice search could look up websites in Google.com.

I will update after doing further tests and experiments.

Out of the box, it has about 5.2gb free space. SPMC runs smoothly. But still cant move apps to thumbdrive, Apparently only when there is a android 7.0 update then it can work properly. So far running Star Wars KOTOR seems quite ok with all the settings turned up minus shadows. With shadows enabled can notice the framerate drop. Still waiting for mi gamepad to arrive to test further.

Hi, i'm a newbie looking to buy an android tv box. currently eyeing this one: http://www.lazada.com.my/original-xiaomi-m...k-18327054.html

i have a few questions about this MiBox:
1. does it has English interface, Android 6?
2. is it suitable for Netflix AND iFlix (i have accounts for both)? Any issues?
3. is it suitable for a person like me who DO NOT want ANY of those 'preloaded' channels (typically those China, Taiwan, HK ones).. just the vanilla MiBox experience with access to Google Play?

hope somebody can help with my questions. Thank you smile.gif

The box you linked is not a box you want based on your requirements. They keyword you need to lookout for whether it has Android 6.0 or Android TV. Anything less its not the 'International Version'. The version you are looking for must be preinstalled with Google's Android TV interface. And yes this version is with English interface. You can try viewing those boxes which ship from China at www.aliexpress.com. Cheapest ones go for about USD69.99 with free shipping. You probably have to wait between 3-4weeks to deliver to you. If you order 1, shouldn't worry about Malaysian Customs tax. I have ordered 3 from them and all arrive in good condition.

Thanks for the reply bro smile.gif the one in the link apparently comes with Android 6.0, English interface. will browse thru aliexpress too.. btw, do you happen to have links to the ones you bought? smile.gif

Nope it's not android TV OS. Just says Android 6.0. Xiaomi released a box similar like the international version around Nov but runs Chinese interface without Google apps.

Could not find iflix on the play store. Meaning there is no Android TV version of the iflix app.

I tried sideloading the apk before but the UI did not work well with the Mi Remote. Basically I still cast to the Mibox from my phone.
*
Yes Iflix works on the international mi box.
Download an app called 'HAL Launcher' for apps that don't show up in main screen of Android TV (leanback launcher). Android TV playstore has it. I use that to access Chrome browser, Iflix, Astro On The Go, Getflix (smart dns), and Mobdro. I download the apk from apkpure.com. If the apps show weirdly on its side, go into HAL launcher settings and force it to show horizontal.

Thanks. How do you navigate the iflix app ui? Keyboard and mouse?

The remote from Mi Box works fine. I checked last night and it appears on my Android TV interface front page. Try searching in the Android TV playstore for 'flix' without the 'I' in front. No idea why it cannot search simply by typing 'Iflix'
