Finally received the international Mi Box today from Aliexpress. Exactly two weeks to ship from China. First impressions : Doesn't have the box cover like that sold in the US. No coupon codes at all. (US version comes with a total of $76 of coupons). 3 pieces of paper for warranty, manual and product info, all in English. Other items include the mi box, remote control and hdmi cable (no AAA batteries).

Boot up looks similar to that on youtube of Americans using the USA Mi Box. The biggest difference is there is only Netflix and Redbull TV on the recommended apps section. Mi Box sold in the US have Sling TV, Hulu, Pandora, Vudu and several other popular streaming apps in the recommended section.

The other Google apps like Android TV playstore, Youtube and Play Movies is preloaded.
Strangely cant control the audio on Netflix shows via the Mi Box remote. But on Youtube and SPMC it works. Must be a bug with the Netflix app.

In the settings, it shows Android 6.01 and no updates available. I tried installing UC Browser, Astro On The Go, Mobdro and APKpure but for some reason the screen orientation is horizontal. I installed a separate app to force the screen orientation correctly. So far never heard this bug from US Mi Box users.

The worst thing so far for me is that Astro On The Go keeps crashing after I input username and password.

I dont know why there is no browser pre-installed in this box. When I do a voice search, it will show hits from youtube. Would have wished the voice search could look up websites in Google.com.

I will update after doing further tests and experiments.
*
please do update...on the performance. Chromecast works properly?

What about watching TV series? Able to get those TV shows? Does the voice control on the remote works?

what is the price you guys bought the mi box tv 3 global for? I see xiaomi US selling at USD69 but cheapest in aliexpress is USD74.99. Why are they selling more expensive cause usually it's the other way around.

And why is out hopeless xiaomi malaysia not bringing this product to malaysia? So many products by xiaomi but only bring in a few phone models. Xiaomi malaysia is really useless.

just wanted to know

what does jailbreak do on mi tv box? and why should we have our box jailbreak?

and whats the difference vs root, i know whats root cos im android user for long time.

thanks smile.gif
*
You wouldn't be asking this is you know what is root. Especially since you been using android for so long. Anyway, basically rooting in android generally allows you to run apps that require root. Certain apps need access to your system files that are usually protected by the OS. For example, titanium backup will be able to backup your system software if it has root. Some apps can only run properly when it has root access.

Yes Iflix works on the international mi box.
Download an app called 'HAL Launcher' for apps that don't show up in main screen of Android TV (leanback launcher). Android TV playstore has it. I use that to access Chrome browser, Iflix, Astro On The Go, Getflix (smart dns), and Mobdro. I download the apk from apkpure.com. If the apps show weirdly on its side, go into HAL launcher settings and force it to show horizontal.
*
thanks for the tips as this helps with a lot of apps that still does not support android TV. However, because the mi box support casting, a lot of apps still works eventhough you need to use an android phone to control. This is the reason why I got the mi box.

So anyone have any suggestions for APKs to download to watch korean/china tv series? I know can add some through KODI but I prefer if there are some native apps to do it.

And do you guys use usb thumbdrive? Cause the default storage is so limited. If yes, how do you direct the apps to be installed in the usb?

I just installed hal launcher and it is working. Able to force horizontal on some of the chinese apps. However, I cannot control the apps using the TV remote. I think maybe need to get an android remote keyboard/mouse device. Can I know how do you control yours?

The one i found in aliexpress which mentioned as internation/global version all have brown colour box 😅 and do you need to pay tax when u import the device?
*
buying from aliexpress usually will bypass immigration. It is very unlikely that you will get taxed even for items that have tax. Unless you buy in large quantity. For small items, the courier they us have methods to bypass tax.

And like stated before, you get the one with brown box version. It already have google play installed.

I was a bit unlucky. My parcel was held up at Customs for almost 2 weeks. But in the end I received my item after 1 mth with no extra tax levy.
*
that is normal. The items always get held up somewhere. But it will usually arrive around 3-4 weeks. When you order from aliexpress, don't waste time tracking here and there. Just order and wait for arrival. In aliexpress, there is buyer protection. Make sure to make a dispute if you have not get the item when protection is almost due. Usually, for small items that is cheap, the seller will not mind refunding.

With the mibox 3 international version vs mi box 3 pro. Which one would you choose and why?
*
i waited and went for international version because I can't read chinese. And I wanted google play to work perfectly. I had experience before with the chinese version where you need to install google play manuall and it is too much hassle. Not to mention lots of compatibility issue. I have not played with the pro (white box) version where the seller install everything for you. So I can't comment on whether that is stable or not. Still, I prefer full english version and so far no regret yet.

i found out that my mi box is getting intermittent connection. It looks like it is due to the wifi being not stable. Can I know everyone else are you having similar issue? I am thinking of getting wifi ac or get a LAN connection.

Personally, I'd go for LAN if want buffer-free streaming - all my streamer boxes are connected through LAN - the only one on wifi (Apple TV) suffers lag and intense buffering (despite using AC router)
*
yeah..i prefer wired connection too but pulling a cable from top level to ground floor is a bit challenging. Have to hack through walls and so on. Might even need to hire professionals to do it.

i have been having problems with kodi since 16. Even 17 is showing same problem.

Sometimes my whole kodi will get reset to default blank installation. So I have to reinstall all the addons and all. Anyone have any idea why this is happening? Is it because I am using external USB for my storage? Bad thing is, we cannot specify which apps to store in internal/external storage. Now all is controlled by android tv.

Or rather one with Gapps, and one without Gapps. Had it not because of youtube that my kids wanted, I would have gone with the more powerful non Gapps.

what do you mean "more powerful"? the specs are the same.

I am using rssplayer on my Note 5 and it is pretty fast. However on Kodi, I couldn't add the icdrama.se source using the remote.

Anyway, another poster has provided the Kodi add-on source instead (even though the source was wrong). I did a bit of search and found the correct link.

add source : http://cthlo.github.io/cthlo-kodi-repo/zips/
add from zip icdrama 1.25

For now I can watch using my MiBox instead of on my phone.
*
thanks! I will add this for my kodi.

Is the chromecast working for anyone? I cannot get it to work. I tried casting in youtube and it can detect my mibox. The mibox will be stuck in the screen loading the video. Waited like 2 minutes and it is still loading. Seem like casting is not working. Used to work but I haven't tried it a long time. Just updated the box to latest version.
