Entry into the game is quite pricey cos of the large number of models involved, and also because Games Workshop keeps hiking prices.
Except if you play Ogre Kingdoms, then you've got less than 20 models to buy & paint.
But if you play Skaven, ie huge numbers of evil rats with green lasers and night vision goggles etc... Then you're looking at 70-100 models. Then, things get very pricey.
At the moment, I think Wolf still has a box of Braettonians... knights on flying horsies... and some other stuff...
There are alternatives, if you're looking to get into table top wargames.
Check out http://www.privateerpress.com
Warmachine started about 3 yrs ago. 4 factions, steam punk fantasy.
The battle is fast and ruthless.
Game system is simpler, and favours aggressive play.
All the miniatures are beautiful pewter casts.
There's a strong storyline or 'fluff' around the Iron Kingdoms, the WarCasters (generals of the army), and the individual units.
There's a good RPG game based on the Iron Kingdoms too.
How this is different from GW games (40k or Fantasy)...
40k is more squad based combat. A lot more minis on the table. Squads engaging each other...
WM is more skirmish. Fewer minis, and each piece is more powerful and have a larger impact on the outcome of the game.
Think like.... A 40k army has a 40 pawns, advancing unrelentlessly towards each other. Engage. And start rolling dice by the dozens until one side falls.
WM is more like a proper chess army. Each piece have its own powers. And when the Warcaster dies, you can basically say game over.
In 40k. The bulk of strategy and tactics comes from building the army... Adding up points. Giving this unit stormbolters and power fists etc etc... And then the army deployment decides 70% of the game. After that it's just moving forward and rolling dice.
WM. Every unit is 'borken' (ie not exactly broken, but almost there...) in their own right. Everything is powerful, and able to influence the game. It's up to the player to wield the weapon correctly.
Yea, I'm very biased towards WM.
I'm the local PressGanger. ie I help do demos, game promotion, tournament & judging etc. Started doing this cos a few years ago started to see some friends desert the game cos tournaments weren't handled right, and the occassional rules disagreements.
If you want to see us play, we usually hang out at Wolf's GameShop on Saturdays. And sometimes Settler's Cafe near Atria on random nights.
I am ratatosk@pressganger.com
Contact and we can see if we can set up a demo, or just come watch us play. All our players are eager to see more players in this game. There's at least 6 of us who just.... can't.... stop... buying... more... miniatures, and have up to a 1000pts of army or more.
And most games are only 500pts.
And it's easy to dip your toes before you plunge. Just pick up a starter box which has about 300pts, and have a go. The starter box only puts you back rm170.
Or if you dont' fancy steampunk mechs. A new IK game is Hordes. 4 more factions of WarBeasts. Giant trolls, Warpwolves, Stone elementals, 6-limbed elephants. This game just came out this year, and not many people have much of an army yet. So, you can get in on the ground floor with this. And you can fight a Hordes army against a WM army.
