Hi guys,

im looking for a smart home system where i can control my lights when i am away from home.

im looking at google home miini and xiaomi gateway, but im not sure if they allow me to control my lights when im not connected to the same wifi.

I know xiaomi has aqara wireless switches and google home support 3rd party switches such as sonoff switches or theres ( https://shopee.com.my/product/26451262/1105206583 ).

But im not sure if i can control them when i am away or i can only control them when im within the same wifi network.

any advice is most appreciated. thanks.

Both can.

What do you mean by both can? Both xiaomi gateway and Google home allow me to turn my lights on and off even though I'm not within the same Wi-Fi network?

If yes, please explain how. Coz I spent hours online and couldn't find any useful advice.

Thanks

Yes.

Provided your Google Assistant (GA) on your phone have the same account as your Google Home, you can use GA when you are outside to turn your lights on/off.

Xiaomi works the same by you using the app when you are outside to control the Xiaomi Gateway in your home.

Ok, so let me get this straight. If I take xiaomi products out of the picture, I get a Google home mini and a wireless switch that is supported by Google home, I can control the light even when I'm outside?

"Classic" old video. Maybe a bit outdated. Sini where got people want to mess around with their Sonoff? grumble.gif
No neutral, no problem. Use Xiaomi Aqara switch.
Sonoff need neutral or you can borrow neutral if got aircon switch just beside it.

how does aqara work without neutral wire? you need the gateway too?

Can also if u don't mind to toggle the switch using the app.
If really need a wall switch maybe use a Sonoff RF with a RF wall switch.
What are u attaching the Sonoff Basic with? Light?

Yup, for lights. I set the power on state to 'ON'. So I can manually switch off, and when I switch on, the lights will come on.

Here's a question. I have a Xiaomi CCTV camera that sends me a notification everytime it detects movement. Anyway to set IFTTT to turn on some wifi controlled lights when a notification is received?
