Considerations when buying smart locks

1. Security: the lock must pass high security standard, it should not be easily hacked, if it can be remotely open, connection to lock must be highly secured.
2. Reliability: it can always be opened and closed without any technical issue, no one want to be locked outside
3. Resiliency: Multiple ways to lock/unlock: NFC, passcode, fingerprint, key, bluetooth etc.

So it is wise not to buy those cheap smart locks, pick a well known brand such as yale, schlage, Aqara.
*
I used to have the yale, but after 2 out of 3 locks already face problems (unresponsive keypad/unable to control remotely with z-wave). I just gave up on that brand and look at others 😑

You cant, you need to install another temp sensor to detect the temperature change and wire the temp sensor to the IR sensor (via settings)
*
Bro, you got the ir transmitter working based on the schematics? Ir receiver works fine but can’t seem to send with ir transmitter, nothing shows up in tasmota logs

Unifi routing having issue yesterday, Astro and Netflix streaming also get affected.

That is the reason I don't like smart devices managed by cloud, slow response and depending on internet connectivity.

Home assistant and home kit are better, all run locally.
*
That might explain it
lyt25_1234 are you using unifi as well?

I’ve decided to take the plunge to transplant some of my remaining wifi tuya devices that are not using esp chips for tasmota. Mainly because 1 or 2 of my tuya switch sometimes not responsive on localtuya and some ewelink bulbs (also not esp 😑)

Using heat guns and solder paste, was worried about brick the board. So far so good just don’t heat too long when desoldering it

Hi guys, Google home requires phone unlock to turn on lights...any idea how turn on the light without unlock the phone/tablet?
*
On my pocofon running custom pixel rom, i can just straight away give command.
What’s your phone model?

Can try this.?

Xiaomi 10T pro

I can use Google assistant to check weather or traffic on locked phone but not to control home smart device. I read some articles it says security issue?

Now the temporary solution is remove my tablet password

If you train to use your voice, should only detect commands coming from you.

Ordered this 6 gang switch from moes to finally replace my 5 gang (2 units) at home.

There’s also this korean brand that offers button switches (based on the pictures) but they’re like 3x more expensive

Anyone got their hands on the Aqara FP1 yet?
Seems to be the best solution for actual human presence so far

am planning to install smart switches for my new apartment to control lighting, ventilation etc.
So far reading up on bits and pieces online and kinda settled on zigbee type system as my friend have -ve experience using wifi switch system due to data packet flooding.

For Zigbee, is Aqara the best system around? how is the reliability and ease of set up? I'll be doing new wiring for the house anyway so should i ask my electrician to pull neutral line to the switch or run as normal light switches? Seeing many types of Aqara switches online (global, china) hence abit confused on which type to get. Are they inter-operatable?
*
Yeah, you should have him all pull the neutral wire behind the switches. That way the zigbee wall switches act as router as well, same thing goes for zigbee bulbs and some power plugs.

Newbie to the smart home world here.

What about the Xiaomi ecosystem? Is it as good?

I currently have their purifiers and planning to add more of Xiaomi's smart devices below:

1) Sensors such as door/window
2) CCTV, smart door bell
3) Yeelight
4) smart wall switches for fan/lights
5) smart sockets (3 pin plug)
6) Vacuum/robot vacuum
7) Smoke detector
8) Smart door lock (maybe in the future)
*
I just mix and match with tuya, sonoff, xiaomi since i use homeassistant to link them all

1) sensors I’ve been using xiaomi ones since i started and it just works
2) xiaomi cctv is ok lah, but a bit restricted. Browse other brands like foscam, hikvision, reolink where they provide much more controls/configuration for their ipcams
3) i only had 1 yeelight i bought a few years back, got tuya bulbs now at cheaper price and works just the same
6) get the ones using lidar for better mapping out your house and can clean anytime even in the dark
8) depends on your door lock type, tuya comes with lots of variation at affordable prices. But I’m holding out until their locks have proper integration in homeassistant.
As cryheart mentioned about xiaomi locks possibly getting hacked, instead of pairing to xiaomi hub you could just pair to your own zigbee coordinator instead.

There was ewelink server outage just last month affecting europe region. Might wanna consider making full local control of your smart devices with homeassistant

As for xiaomi/aqara ecosystem, got their homekit integration which tuya/ewelink don’t directly provide without some workaround (homebridge)

not hacked, more like system failure caused auto reboot lead to unlock itself during reboot
*
Well, that’s unacceptable for home security.
Which model was it?

hi,

What are you using to host the homeassistant? i was thinking of a raspberry pi.
*
I’ve setup on pc, and raspberry pi
Rpi 4 is now limited stock it seems, actually got my 8gb rpi4 from carousell for like 240 which was really good deal last year

If you wanna just try it first, you can just reuse your old laptop/pc before you migrate

Only reason i use pc because some apps like face recognition (deepstack/compreface) needs x86 machines & using google coral m.2 pcie module (for frigate cctv).
Last year the google coral usb is mostly out of stock.
Even worse this year, the pcie, usb coral all takde

good point.

what use cases are u using facial recognition and ai object detection for at home?

planning to automate alot of stuff for new home...so looking into techs...new to smart home stuff.

was first into wifi devices but after some research...found out that zigbee with home assistant would be better with a few dozen devices. thoughts?
*
My priority was just getting frigate nvr to work without impacting cpu much since all the ai object detection is done locally with the coral edge tpu. Also, less false detection

The facial recognition is just something I’m messing around. If you point camera outdoor you can get alerts of exactly who is outside once it’s trained

LTT did a video using frigate last year, his device is overkill though (a few dozens edge tpu in 1 card)

Zigbee device -> zigbee coordinator > homeassistant
Wifi device -> cloud -> homeassistant

Some don’t like this reliance if the cloud goes down, like what happened to ewelink euro servers just dec last year.
Also, might impact your router if you have more devices connected.
There’s sonoff & tuya integration for respective devices

If you wanna go full local with wifi devices, can flash custom firmware like tasmota (requires esp chip). There’s also some challenge with that recently

1) if device is not using esp chip - what to do?
a) find matching esp chip (esp12s)
b) desolder onboard chip
c) transplant esp

Basically less headache with zigbee devices if you plan to a do fully local setup

just opened up the existing switches that I intend to replace and confirmed they don't have a Neutral line. I'm trying to implement a local Home Assistant automation, can Tuya zigbee switches, contact, temperature and brightness sensors able to integrate into HA?
*
You can get the moes switches that don’t require neutral or capacitor
Yes, can

Got price hike also right?
Also, anyone here tried using radar sensor (RCWL-0516) for room occupancy?

You want to know when your pretty next door neighbour came back is it? laugh.gif
My research on this sensor indicates that it is very sensitive until can detect outside house presence.
*
Good for static detection?
Like if the kids sitting down on the floor tv or lie down? Does it still detect anything when that happens

I have Radar sensor (non smart version, used it to trigger ligtht in bath room), it is pretty sensitive, but if you stand still, it will turn off light, you must move a bit from time to time to make it work
*
I see, so the solution would be to add longer time delay at least before turning off the lights
Is it the same radar sensor i listed?
I’m looking into some non invasive presence detection
Like the thermal camera, maybe not enough cover wide room
Even with ai on frigate, still needs some movement to trigger detection

Anyone tried the wifi tmall genie led bulb?
Can check inside and see what chip is on the board if can flash tasmota or need to transplant.
The price is quite cheap

hey guys. any suggestions for a newbie to have my first smart home setup. did my own research but getting really confused.
would like to install smart switches and door sensors. like if i open the door at my main entrance then whole living room lights up.

but my house does not have neutral wire. I've saw reviews about aqara smart switches with no neutral getting spoilt after 2 years.
some said to add capacitors..??
im a total noob at this.
should i go for smart switches without neutral?
any other brands that lasts long? thanks.
*
I don’t think you should look into specific brand much since I’ve seen people shared premium brand ones like Shelly can still get burned or damaged (depend on usage i guess)

I’ve got some random china brand rf switch that still works since 5 years ago

You should look for the ones that’s just easy to install
I have a few non neutral/no capacitor switches from teekar/moes. i don’t have to climb up the ceiling to install the capacitor or loop neutral wires.
