No story, what little PvE in there is barely more than cosmetic. There are two PvE expansions released (called 'Adventures'). You unlock them by paying gold, and you will get their new cards after defeating the bosses. These adventures feature specially designed PvE encounters that requires building specialized decks to beat.As a new player, you will unlock several class cards as you level up. After that, you get new cards by buying card packs (100g per pack) via ingame gold or cash. You earn gold by doing daily quests, eg "win 3 games for 40 gold" or "win 5 games with this class for 60 gold". You also earn 10 gold for every 3 PvP games you win. Each card pack has 5 random cards, one of which is guaranteed a rare or better.
The second currency ingame is called "dust". You get this by disassembling cards that you don't want (duplicates etc), and you use it to craft the card you want.
Arena mode requires 150g to enter, but you get more gold the more you win, as well as one card pack. 3 wins is usually considered as breakeven as you get some consolation gold as well as a card pack. 8 wins is enough to get back 150g directly. A 12-win arena run can reward you with up to 400 gold, some dust as well as the pack.
At first I too was wary about playing against people online, but the lack of a chat mode unless you're friends, limited emotes (which can be turned off) and quick games (avg 10 minutes) meant you will quickly forget the jackass who defeated you.
