Majority of SMEs will replace their accountant who ignored cloud

http://www.ncltec.com

Yawning gap in accountants’ understanding of business needs
Two-thirds of SMEs would replace accountant who ignored cloud software
SMEs keen to replace accounting roles with cloud software
A majority of SME business owners in Australia would consider replacing their accountant if they failed to make the transition to cloud accounting software, according to a survey by CCH, a financial information and services company.

The survey, which canvassed 1,000 Australian business owners and 212 accountants, revealed a yawning gap between expectations in the business world and the standard practice of the accounting industry.

Despite growing demand for cloud-based services, accountants had been slow to take advantage of innovation in accounting software. Only 23 percent of accountants servicing SMEs had moved to cloud accounting software, said the survey.

Younger accountants were more likely to have explored cloud computing and adapted their firms to more efficient methods of working.

The research found that more than half of SMEs (52 percent) would consider replacing their accountant if he or she did not move to a cloud-based system, with this proportion rising to 72 percent among younger SME owners (aged 18 to 34).

Two thirds of business owners also would consider replacing some of the roles performed by their accountant with cloud accounting software. Younger business owners were even more open (86 percent) to taking this approach.

Despite the risks, only 52 percent of accountants expressed concern about losing services to the cloud.

CEO of Wolters Kluwer Asia Pacific, Russell Evans, said the survey was a wake-up call for accountants putting off a shift to a cloud software platform.

“It suggests a business-as-usual approach is not really an option for accounting firms. Their SME clients are saying they want to move down the cloud path and many will do so without their existing accountants if need be,” Evans said in the press release.

“And the impulse toward the cloud among younger business owners is even stronger, suggesting accounting firms risk losing a whole new generation of SME clients if they fail to act,” he said.

“The business case for making the shift is clear. By taking the initiative and moving to a cloud-based platform before their SME clients do, accountants can secure their central role in managing their client’s accounts, while freeing up time and resources to provide strategic advisory services, an activity highly valued by their clients.”

Momentum among accountants towards the cloud would soon reach critical mass, the survey found. Of the 77 percent of accountants surveyed who were yet to make the move, 60 percent expected to do so within three years.

When asked to specify the reasons for moving to a cloud-based system, a majority of accountants cited the ability to access accounts from multiple locations. Other reasons given were: no need to maintain or buy hardware maintenance; ability to scale up as clients grow; no need to manually update tax tables and other content; lower overall costs and up-front investment.

Reasons given by accountants for not having adopted cloud-based systems were a lack of familiarity with cloud systems (42 percent) or the existence of a working system (37 percent). Only 31 percent of accountants surveyed cited security as a concern, confirming growing confidence in cloud-based systems as their use becomes more prevalent.

“Clearly, the early barriers to adopting cloud software solutions for accounting are evaporating as they prove their robustness and worth in business applications,” Evans said.

“In weighing up cloud solutions the cost-benefit analysis is shifting rapidly in favour of the cloud, and that has not been lost among the accounting profession or their SME clients. The end result will be a more efficient interface between accountants and their clients, with less time spent on administration services and more on strategic business planning.”

The CCH research revealed the average accountant currently spends 63 percent of his or her time handling transactional or administrative functions for their SME clients, and only 37 percent providing strategic business advice.

IGP gives anti-GST rally on Saturday green light

KUALA LUMPUR: An anti-GST rally to be held at Padang Merbok here Saturday has been given the green light, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said Friday.

Commending the organisers for following the proper procedure in getting permission to use the location for the rally, Khalid said police would assist in maintaining order and ensuring the safety of protestors.

"This is what I have been saying about going by the law and getting the permission for the rally.

"Don't disrupt the traffic at Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, or be a nuisance to the public and traders in the area," he said, referring to previous rallies.

"We don't want anyone to disturb the group in exercising their freedom of speech. We will also ensure their safety is not threatened by any quarters that might oppose them.

"It's our responsibility," he added, while reminding protesters to be careful and not break any law while exercising their freedom of expression.

The rally is being organised by Dewan Ulamak PAS Pusat.

Many more aware it is not compulsory to pay service fee

PETALING JAYA: Many Malaysians were not aware until the recent Goods and Services Tax (GST) was implemented that it was not compulsory to pay the service charge, which is usually 10% of the total bill.

But now there is widespread outcry over the extra charge – which is taxed a further 6% on top of the GST applied to the original purchase – and many are refusing to pay the amount.

The backlash was so strong that the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry issued a moratorium on restaurants charging the 10%, which was first established decades ago in lieu of tipping.

According to Minister Datuk Seri Hasan Malek, traditionally, a collective agreement (CA) between employees and employers regulated the percentage of the service charge given to each employee.

However, many restaurants adopted the practice even without an agreement, with owners pocketing the 10% for themselves and workers never seeing a sen of it.

Ministry secretary-general Datuk Alias Ahmad said the spirit behind it was for lower income employees to supplement their wages.

“However, there are restaurants and hotels which simply add the fee without a collective agreement and abuse the system by not giving the employees anything,” he said, adding that the ministry was putting a stop to this now and revising their enforcement scope.

“We have a working group between us, the Human Resource Ministry and Finance Ministry to protect the rights of the consumer. We will investigate and study the matter to come up with a new law,” he added.

Hasan also warned that action would be taken against restaurants and hotels that increased prices to cover the now-halted service charge.

“That is profiteering. You are allowed to make a profit, but within reason. We have a mechanism to identify this and we will crack down (on errant operators).

“If there’s no agreement, we can take action.”

He said the ministry would check that those claiming the 10% were actually giving employees their tips.

He noted, however, that restaurants or hotels with a collective agreement were still allowed to levy the charge as it was a legally binding document.

‘Too soon to gauge GST impact on investments’

IPOH: The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (Miti) is assessing the impact of Goods and Services Tax (GST) on investments in the country.

Deputy minister Datuk Lee Chee Leong said it was too soon to make any conclusion as GST only took effect on April 1.

“We need some time to get the feedback and input before making any announcements. We are collecting the necessary information through the relevant agencies, to see the effects,” he said after opening an outreach programme organised by the ministry here yesterday.

The programme was part of Miti’s ongoing efforts to inform the local business community of the various policies, promotions and incentives available.

About 200 participants including exporters, members of the business associations and entrepreneurs attended the event.

Miti’s Perak chief Nazrul Izwan Ismail and Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry Perak branch chairman Datuk Lim Si Boon were present.

In his speech earlier, Lee said despite the uncertainty in the global economy, foreign direct investment (FDI) was encouraging.

“Miti is constantly taking initiatives to enhance the country’s competitiveness,” he said.
