QUOTE(madstone @ Oct 16 2006, 02:38 PM) my 6400 getting slower while switching on n off there's one time cannot switch off any tips to get my 6400 on it's fast track while starting n closing? Type msconfig at the run prompt. Go to Startup and clear everything there. Then reenable selectively, as you discover which programs you need. Chances are all of them are not required for the laptop to run. The essentials like wireless drivers and antivirus will be under the Services tab. You can disable those if you know enough not to cripple your rig.

QUOTE(enoughcliches @ Oct 18 2006, 10:51 AM) Where did you get this 'cheap' RAM, KeV? When HDD manufacturers say 80GB, what they mean is 80,000,000,000B. But in real computing terms, 1KiB = 1024B and not 1000B (a kB). Similarly, 1GiB = 1024^3B and not 1000^3B (a GB). The "Ki" and "Gi" are what we call binary prefixes and are slightly different from the usual "kilo" and "giga". Therefore, 80GB = 80,000,000,000/1024^3 GiB which is approximately equal to 75GiB just as the OS reports. For more info on the subject, read this: Hard Disk, WikipediaIf i'm not wrong 250-350 is the market price for 1GB of ram. So, yup, KeV got a pretty 'cheap' deal. Yeah, a 80gb hd will come with around 75 gibigytes. Remember MediaDirect and the Dell restore partition too. Both filled with crap, IMO.

If i'm not wrong, 4GB ought to be possible. Some people have tried it successfully in the E1705/9400, while some others have reported unstablity. The limitation right now will be with Windows, which will only report 3GB of it. A 64bit OS might be able to make it fly. 2GB notebook RAM modules are DEFINITELY available, but they'll cost you a bomb from Dell. Try somewhere like Newegg.com if you're a technology freak. Of course, i can't really envision the purpose of 4GB on a 6400, maybe on a M90 or some other workstation laptop.

QUOTE(Giant @ Nov 6 2006, 09:24 PM) just got my 6400 today! Im uninstalling those craps intalled by dell, i wonder the "detect digital line" dell restore, dell media & dell network assist is important or not, can i clear tht all off? Get rid of all the crap!!! Including McAfee!!! Keeping the files, but disabling everything under msconfig--->startup and msconfig----> non-microsoft services also helps. Just leave the Intel entries intact. Quickset isn't really essential either.
