hey guys, i'm really into system of a down so i'm planning to learn some of their songs.. but most of thier songs are tuned to drop c or drop Db..
so when i tune my les paul's strings down, it becomes lose and its very hard to play.. so i'm thinking of gettin a new bunch of strings.. so is there any type of strings tat are specially made for drop tuning? if yea, then could u guys suggest some strings..
and my fingers are really big, so when i play on the low frets esp the 1e n 2b strings, its really hard to fret the strings.. do i need a higher gauge strings or sumthing?

If you do alot of drop tunings, I suggest you try out thicker gauges. Also, when re-tuning, make sure you remove any "slack" from the strings while tuning... I normally hold and pull lift the string upwards while turning the tuning peg, cutting out the slack..... then quickly retune to the key I want....
Try running .60s or even *gasp* .70s and see if it works for you.

Duh........ My personal preference is GHS Boomers....... but you can try out Ddarrio strings also..... I hear they're pretty good for drop tunings.

Well, he recommended my personal preference as well, D'addario's, even tho I don't play drop tunings.

i've tuned all my strings down 2 1/2 steps to B before to play carcass stuff. that time was using ernie ball 11-48 cos was the heaviest they had.
now ernie ball has heavier sets, but not sure if bentley stocks them. 10-52, 11-54, 12-56.
if you get thicker strings, it will affect the nut, and the 6th string nut slot might crack, especially on low end guitars with cheap plastic nuts.

Oh yeah. That's right..... When I changed the strings to GHS boomers, I had the luthier replace the saddle too.

I have a friend who uses Ernie Ball not even slinky for B tuning. Works well enough for him. I think it is 11-56 or something..
Feels really weird playing a wound G though.

the lowest tuning i done before was drop B# (on the big E), and the rest is half step...using d'darrio's .10...sounded ok, but if strum too hard..the string with the B tuning will tend to buzz as it will hit the fret board...
but nowadays, i stick to standard tuning...lazy to tune already...

I think you mean C# right? Cause there is not B#. For me, even dropping a 46 to D is too loose already. At least a 52 for the E string for me when it comes to drop tuning.

At least a 52 for the E string for me when it comes to drop tuning. well, i checked the tuning using the zoom 505 built in tuner, and it said B#...or my tuner had gone mad? i did it once to play alter bridge's song <broken wings> This post has been edited by asura_86: Oct 16 2006, 02:42 AM

Seems rather cool looking. At least it sort of like forces you to check your intonation on the 12th fret as well I like it because it is a keychain, definitely easy to carry around.
