President Park says new railroad will help develop economy in Korea's southwest
Updated: 2015-04-01 16:39:38 KST

President Park Geun-hye says a new high-speed railway connecting Korea's southwest will help the local economy grow and spur social and cultural cooperation in the region.

At a ceremony to mark the railroad opening, she said along with 23 billion dollars worth of economic ripple effect, the railway is expected to allow more people and businesses to relocate to areas surrounding two of the government's SME-supporting innovation centers there.

The latest high-speed tracks will shorten travel time from Seoul to the southwestern city of Gwangju to an hour-and-a-half.

President Park also rode on the new tracks with Malaysia's visiting transport official.

Malaysia and Singapore have shown interest in Korea's railroad technology as they plan to place an order later this year, for a 22-billion-dollar high-speed railway project to link their countries.

Interestingly enough the first KTX in Korea was a variant of TGV.

Then the later KTX is localised version with improved characteristics and most of which done by Koreans.
