Thinking of installing 225/45/R17 tyres on my 17 x 7J,
Has anybody tried this config before and will it fit ?

Should be okay, but dont go any wider. Widest I've used is 215 only.

no problem. 7jj can be fitted with 225. if 7.5jj max is 235. i'm running on 235/45/17 for my 7.5jj.
