Dear Sifu-sifu,

Computer: Laptop Dell Studio 1535
Problem: atikmpag.sys or atikmdag.sys error BSOD
Observation: Nothing displayed on laptop screen. (but have backlight)
Sign of failure: Laptop suddenly auto-off. Next day, BSOD and cannot see any display on screen.

I tried to connect my laptop to my desktop monitor through VGA cable. Switch the view to desktop monitor. I am able to view it.
I tried to switch the screen viewing back to my laptop, it successfully to display. Sometimes cannot switch.

Colourful lines, numerous dots (like cacat graphic) can be observed during boot up.
I tried to boot into safe mode, graphic looks normal.
Initially i suspect is screen problem or graphic card driver problem. So, I uninstall the driver.
But, still can see colourful lines during booting. Sometimes screen cannot display too. Need external monitor to view it.

I also disassemble, reapply thermal paste, clean the venting&fan etc. At last, I realized my laptop fan is not working. Abnormally hot.

Now I think I am deep in shit. I think is hardware related issue. Have I fried my graphic chip? cry.gif

I am not sure my poor analysis is accurate or not. I am also unsure I can ask this question at here or not:

Can anyone suggest me recommended laptop repair shop nearby Klang/Subang/Lowyat?
I want a trustworthy, experienced personnel with integrity to repair my 6 years old laptop. It is important to me...

Updates: The fan is running, when GPU is around 65 degree C...

Your graphic chip has been overheated, those colorful lines u see are called artifacts. Can try a temporally fix by using hair dryer and blow the GPU chip for ~10min, if u were lucky, can last for months if u didn't play game with your laptop. If play games, maybe few days or weeks. I got send a couple of laptop with this type of prob for repair, costing around RM300-400. What they do is just reball the GPU chip.

from a website did the trick :

1st.
boot into the bios and look at the bios rev on the main screen. asus on the older bios switch from a .rom to a .cap file. the newest bios has a lot of bug fixes and for windows 7/8. the other bug fixes are for ram and cpu code updates. there a usb flashback port to flash your mb without powering the mb on or put the new .cap file on a usb stick and use the bios updater inside of the mb bios. also make sure from the mb installer cd you did not install the Lucid Virtu Software V1.2.108.18765 for Windows 7 32bit & 64bit. it a know issues to crash windows and gpu when it tries to bond a ipgpu with a gpu.
i would also boot into safe mode..uninstall the ati drivers..get windows to boot into windows normal then install the newest intel chipset drivers then reboot. then try the ati drivers again

If not working try this:
2nd.
Follow every step :
Step 1: Download and install the latest ati graphic driver.AND DONT TURN OFF OR RESTART YOUR COMPUTER AFTER INSTALLATION

Step 2: Then go to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers and rename atikmdag.sys to atikmdag.sys.old.

Step 3: Go to ati directory (usually in C:\ATI) and find the file atikmdag.sy_.

Step 4: Copy the file to your Desktop directory.

Step 5: Open cmd.exe by going to Start -> type cmd in the search box and hit enter.

Step 6: Change the directory to Desktop by typing chdir Desktop.

Step 7: Then, type EXPAND.EXE atikmdag.sy_ atikmdag.sys. Or,

expand -r atikmdag.sy_ atikmdag.sys

Step 8: When the expansion is complete, copy the new atikmdag.sys from your Desktop to

C:\Windows\System32\Drivers

Step 9: Restart your computer and the problem should be resolved.

Its not faulty mb or card problem! The drivers is the main culprit here!

I can't install the driver. It stops me with some error message (no matter is the driver supply by Dell, or the AMD driver which match my graphic chip)

Now I am not sure whether is my graphic chip problem, LCD screen problem or driver.
If graphic chip, it confirm won't last long? I heard it hard to be repair right as it is solder together with motherboard....
What is reball?

Before jump the conclusion that your GPU chip is dead, when u disassemble that time to clean your fan, u got check the fan is still functioning at that moment ?
For specialist that specialize with this type of repair, is not that hard to repair because they have the equipment to melt the solder and remove the chip from the mobo. They will remove all the old solder ball, then put new solder ball, then solder it back to the mobo. That is called reball. Some people say, it won't last that long, maybe 1 year or more. Last time the laptop i sent for repair has been lasted for few month and but dunno how long would it last

High possibility is a failing GPU chip, nothing related with drivers, since the artifacts is there before windows. Last time I just send my laptop to my friend's shop, but not his shop that do the repair, they sup it to outside specialist do. But workmanship is not that good, because when i got back the laptop, the HDD activity and power LED were not connected back.
