Has anyone bought Engine Oil from Tesco?

I've bought the Helix Ultra due to the cheap promo price from Tesco the other day and thinking if it's from Tesco it should be original and with a good price also.

However, at the mechanic, after unscrewing the top cover, I realized the silver seal has been broken mad.gif

It looks like someone has tampered with it

Now after 500kms driving in that oil in the morning the rev goes up to 1.7k and engine feels like it's misfiring.

Will probably change out this oil very soon.

You bought oil with broken seal.

The oil sold by Tesco are genuine oil packed in EU. They are good.

AFAIK, tesco oil all are unsealed. basically i doesnt trust oil from tesco especially its being used in my own car. U cant be willing to spend 100k for ur car but only can afford a cheap oil right? Anyway just my opinion, i know alot forumer here is using it without a problem too smile.gif

Misfiring has nothing got to do with engine oil.

yup, yesterday i went to teso too.. its engine oil quite cheap compare petrol pump price.. if it already been tempered, u should bring this issue to tesco.. but not sure how to proof to them that its not u tempered it..

this has been asked many years ago.....tesco oil doesnt come with seal n its not from here (means its not recycled oil)....dont over think it...misfiring could be your plugs, dirty throttle body or sensor....

u think they are willing to lose $$ in court claims over their oil? I believe their management are more efficient than that

I've also used Mobil 1/Shell/Castrol from Tesco and never have any issues whatsoever. I don't think big name stores like them will dare selling fake oil and they would have special distribution channel on their own. So I believe it's still a very good deal.

depend on old or new packaging, if the new one from shell with natural gas as base oil stock. its comes with seal

New packaging with natural gas technology!

How to bring to them when the mechanic has already drained off all the old oil and the only option is use that oil and not use the mechanic's oil

it looks to me that yes it has been tampered with.

However, I noticed something fishy... when I goto shell website they did show that the new bottle designs have a code which can be smsed to verify the authenticity of the bottle, but this bottle from Tesco no such code.

Misfiring might not be caused by the oil, just hoping that the oil is real.

I've tried using fake oil in my old car before and the engine oil just disappears, lost of power and bad mileage - 350kms per full tank when averaging out 450kms before and after changing out fake oil

Yes when they offer promotion, those are mostly for older oil. Still ok to buy but better use it soon and not to keep stock for longer still.

Actually they have more recent production one but would not offer at promotion yet, so still the same price like normal (>rm200 for FS oil).

i buy so many times...rm129 for 5w40 total fully syn and rm65-75 for semi total syn..all also near to expiration.
recently i bought few...all 2013 batch.don't know the offer still have bo...12 days something left when i last open their webpage.

In conclusion if you are afraid to buy Shell brands imported from Tesco, then don't buy.

For me, I buy Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Oil ,with API SL ratings, and use them on my car.
Now currently using Petronas Urania Supremo CI-4. RM 75 for 5 litres.

While Shell Helix Ultra has ACEA A3/B3 & A4/B4, this one has ACEA E7/E5/E3/A3/B3/B4 standards

saw some funny comments from noob...

anyway.. if the bottle is sealed, it can be kept up to 4 years.

FYI, Tesco imported the bottles from EU, hence no seal, this is because they don't

have fake oil issues like here in poor country.

And i can tell you, even with seal, the oil selling here locally also might no be genuine.

Have you opened it yet?

Is the seal tampered with?

Is there a code in front to scan/verify for authenticity?

Thanks.

i have been using fully synthetic from tesco for years ... i've used all brands and grades from there, shell, castrol , and now Total . no problem at all and i have 2 cars all running on oils bought from tesco.

problems will come when your mechanic does not do the servicing right or your car sensors got problem.

You're right. The engine oil sell at tesco such as shell, castrol, total & mobil was the imported engine oil and doesn't have aluminium foil seal.

I used to buy engine oil from Tesco for years. Tesco is worth to trust than spare part shop. I am glad that Tesco and AEON Big importing engine oils and sell at reasonable price despite of main distributor in Malaysia and Singapore selling at crazy price.

Sometime Giant Singapore offer at Shell 5w40 @ SGD32.90.

Please survey overseas market e.g. amazon, then you will realize that engine oil is very cheap in western countries and Tesco has good margin when us selling @ RM129/4L smile.gif

For example, Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W-30 Motor Oil - 5 Quart only USD11 after rebate at USA now

We could google anything to learn. It is not wise to believe that paying more for better quality.

Be a smart consumer smile.gif

Good luck

I prefer to use oils meant for the niche market ie, not so popular oils. Right now Im using Chemlube esther based fully synthetic on my cars but with different grades though. At rm55 per litre, its a good buy to me and you can be guaranteed there wont be fakes because its not popular.

My experience with tesco on engine oil has been 4 years

I've bought:
Shell Semi Syn 10w - 40 @ RM 89
Shell Full Syn 5w - 40 @ RM 119

But in year 2016, is no longer that cheap, easily RM 139 now

I had been using that capalang Tesco brand 20W50 mineral engine oil in my Volvo for all of the 6 years that I owned the car.

Cheap, no probs.

I trust engine oils sold in Tesco more than those at the spare parts shop.

Heck, I trust Tesco brand better than those Cap Ayam dunno what brand at the parts shop.

Yes, for 5 years now I also have been using oils bought at Tesco/AEON (even though still not their Tesco/AEON brands). I also rather buy engine oil at Tesco/AEON rather than any random parts shops, coz actually those parts shops might sell fake oils (knowingly or not).

Previously was using Shell Helix Ultra @139.

One week ago, saw all the while eyeing mobile 1 new life 0-40w 4ltr @ 169, bought one bottle. Yesterday went to buy one more bottle. As I bought when first having promotion, that time still have plenty. When I was there yesterday, only less than 10 bottles left!

To bros who prefer mobile 1, please act fast!

Branded oils in Lazada from Tesco are Euro spec'ed.
Besides the very basic and minimal specifications of API SL/SM/Sn, most or all branded oils sold in Tesco are from Europe with a stronger Euro specifications in ACEA A3/B4 or C3.
One pays lower price in Tesco for better spec'ed oils as compared against local service station's. tongue.gif
It's really value for money.

Guys, weird enough. These few days I visited 2 different Tesco outlets and they do not carry much engine oil nowadays. Even there are some engine oils on the shelves but none with popular brands or series! I wonder what happened to the stocks? All sold due to 11.11 sale or our currency issues??

Are engine oil from Lazada online shopping reliable?

Yeah.. Tesco and Giant having very few promotions these days.
Giant now promoting "Branded" engine oil, I guess is their own label oils.

The ones from Lazada are like spare part shops (I believe most of them are spare parts retailers too). Need to look for reliable shops. Safer bet would be Tesco thru Lazada.

Yeah I noticed this too, in the last month or so, Tesco has not sell much other oil brands except their own and Castrol! sad.gif Wonder what's going on...
If they really stop selling, then there goes one of my main engine oil seller for saving now. sweat.gif Giant and Aeon are not selling as many brands and not having as often promotions as Tesco.

As for buying via Lazada, I've bought once before from Vanli, seems legit.

Bro, thank you for the info. Today I visited another 1 more established Tesco Extra and Giant, both does not have good branded engine oil with discount. Giant is selling Shell Helix Ultra at 229 (at normal price). I wonder what is the reason that Tesco is not carrying much branded engine oil with promotional price which they normally do. Anybody got insider's news?

Side topic, I think in the rate our country developing, sooner or later we won't get a lot of items in our hypermarket like what we experienced for our engine oils. bangwall.gif

i heard rumours about tesco fully synthetic oils and why they are cheap. They are considered 2nd or 3rd grade fully synthetic. dunno if this is true.. maybe some experts can elaborate?

Something must be going on, maybe Shell Malaysia & others are pressuring Tesco not to undercut them anymore! bangwall.gif Cannot be just suddenly Tesco stops selling like that.

That's rubbish, not true at all! Tesco imported directly themselves from Europe, bypassing those Malaysian distributors. Probably then they bad mouth Tesco, spreading that nonsense rumors. Many of those brands like are not 1st rate synthetic to begin with no matter who sells them, they are mostly Group 3 based. You want 1st rate synthetic, then buy Amsoil, or the ester based Motul or any of those really top brands who made their oils from group 4 or above synthetics.

Or maybe something wrong with Tesco or distributors who supply to Tesco. Or maybe Tesco gets some complaints from these big companies.
I have searched some Shell Helix Oil in Lazada, some got good feedback but the authenticity of these oils are still in doubt. Some I read can verify through sms to a no. But bear in mind, if I would sell counterfeit oil, I would set up the sms system which is not that expensive to invest in- it is just a phone no. with reply.

This may be the end of the good old days. The days to have affordable engine oil no longer exists.
Sigh, I didn't stock a few bottles merely due to do not want to the tie up money with these stocks and headache to keep these oils at home.

I suspect Tesco got complaints from those Malaysia brand distributors. I noticed Tesco also has downsized their rack space/allocation for this section, which looks like they are not planning to sell as much anymore too! sweat.gif

Bros, thank you for info once again.

Day 1- Visited 1 Tesco and Tesco extra, no stock for most major brands. IIRC, only house brand at around RM169 and some type which I am not familiar with.
Day 2- Visited 1 Tesco extra and 1 Giant. Tesco not selling any major brands that I know of and Giant selling Helix Ultra @229.
Yesterday and today, visited AEON Big. Shell Helix Ultra 4L @ RM151.15. Bought 4 bottles straight as stocks. 1 bottle manufactured in 2015. 2 bottles Aug 2016 and 1 bottle Jan 2017. Another few bottles Jan 2017 shown signs of spills and less volume by looking at the indicator by the side.

Comparable to the lowest price, from 120 to 139, now the lowest I can get is 151, considered acceptable and IMHO, is from reliable source.

Also, have checked Lazada. Do not know the authenticity of the oils but read that from same seller e*as the stock varies. Some said have verification code while some said no. Some said genuine products some in doubt. Still awaiting the situation to settle down hence stock some Helix Ultra. Price at 140+

I believe since it is low stock in Tesco, currently I am experiencing engine oil crisis. Do not think have chance to buy through Lazada Tesco.

Check with Shell Petrol Station, selling at around RM260+ (without any promotion). Ah Beng spare part shop at around RM220+ which I doubt about authenticity.

Yeah, regarding the manufacturing location, I think I read that Lazada (not Tesco one), Shell (some) are from Hong Kong.
While Tesco/AEON Big from EU. Helix Ultra from Tesco and AEON Big all I purchased do not have aluminium foil seals.
Even some oils sell in Shell Petrol Station showing inconsistency in the stocks, some have sms verification and some do not have.
Very confusing combination. This shows that there are so many different sources of engine oils in the market.
Sorry to say, I like to buy "genuine" / OEM spare part from Ah Beng spare parts shop but not for the engine oils.
I do buy other car oils/ fluid from Ah Beng spare part shops though e.g.: ATF, brake oil etc.

Aluminium seal, as specially developed and found in Shell Malaysia products, is pure marketing and/or saleman gimmicks for differentiation (from EU Shell products) in package appearance whilst 'inside' is exactly similar, all for 'justifying' their exorbitant and cut throat selling price , victimising consumer pockets .
In layman terminology, this is all bullshit from a local greedy corporate player .

Seeing that its no longer imported by Tesco from the photo of the sticker my guess is that Shell Malaysia sent a threatening letter - like a Show Cause letter or lawyer letter asking them to stop importing . But seems Tesco takes from another supplier silently . My 2 sens guess.

I have been using the Shell Helix Ultra from Tesco / Giant for the past 6 years on both my cars covering over 250K km combined.

No issues and I trust that Tesco will not jeopardize their own liability for selling fake products.

I myself bought a bottle to test it out on an old car one more time. Previously had used this before but within 5k km i actually got my mech to drain them all out and replace with LM 10w-30 Semi Sync.

I did pour out the oil from the bottle to have a look indeed it's darker than a normal. I would assume in EU they really do recycle their engine oil due to environmental reason. Let's see if it's really good as claimed by the fellow forumers here who have been using it for donkey years.

Are you suggesting it's the EU based oil are partly recycled oil ?

They do have strict rules in recycling of used oil, but not back into engine oil. It's recycle into many by-products such as bitumen / oil stock for industrial use.

Anyway, as anything goes , use at your own risk and more importantly doing a timely change of oil is better than using high grade oil but neglect changing it.

well that's all i can say pouring it out, it's indeed pretty dark unlike the ones you will get from your official service center and/or from petrol kiosk. Yup, will give it a try if the engine do not feel right will flush it out asap.

Well considering so many peeps had vouch for Tesco Shell oils i just can't sit around and not testing it.. Especially when it's RM109 for fully sync.

By right Giant / Tesco should sell the HX8 at lower price than Ultra, because if you take a look at Shell stations, HX8 is around RM 180 vs Ultra which is RM 220 plus.

and the reason why Shell Malaysia introduce HX8 is to so-call make their Fully synthetic more affordable and keeping their Ultra , the top of the line model , although there is one more , rare, limited edition called Shell Helix Power.

https://www.shell.com.hk/zh_hk/motorists/oi...helixpower.html

The difference between the HX8 and the Ultra is not just fully synthetic. Like someone mentioned here in BITOG forum:

QUOTE
Shell Helix Ultra base oil is made with GTL technology. Only Ultra range is using this base oil
XHVI base oil is made out of slack wax and is used in this HX8 oil.
https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbth...lix_HX8___5w-30

Kinda like HX8 is Nescafe and Ultra being...Starbucks kopi.
Heck if my car can drink Starbuck coffee at discounted price, why would I still buy Nescafe? biggrin.gif

BTW, I have tried the Ultra to like 13K before I decided "enough is enough". My 2 sens, If its recycled oil or some minyak masak in disguised, it would had break down at 3K mileage.

4 years later still you guys talk about it. In fact my 1st post is dated 4 yeads ago.

I have bought one myself and never regretted.
RM 89.90 for a ori retail price of RM 230 oil is bang of the buck.

The reason why Shell Malaysia can't sue Tesco and Giant is because they are bringing in genuine oil also. But they created fake stories about lab testing showed "2 out 10" tested fake.

So What Shell Malaysia did was to create a nonsense ad - Made for Malaysia / Utk Pasaran Malaysia.
Of course this does effective fool some people but in reality, there is no such thing as an oil developed for a specific country.

I have even read some FB comments - "EU oil is for cold country such as UK. Not compatible for our hot country". Nonsense. The 5w40 from EU and the so-called 'Made for Malaysia Market' 5w40 has the same viscosity.

And I bet some would doubt it because of the cheaper price. Its OK. You can goto Shell Station and get it for RM 230 if that satisfies you.

Agree with you on all the bullshits from Shell Malaysia on 'Made for Malaysia' oil adverts , and would love to read public statements in black and white from Shell Malaysia stating clearly that this Helix Ultra VOA from Russia is NOT suitable for Malaysia weathers bla bla bla .
