So I contacted this company called Lytox Engineering. They do carry Krytox lubricant, but the moq they require is 2oz x 5 for a proper quotation (I assume per type) from their Singapore HQ, that's crazy lots of oil or grease and the price will be "AMAZING" I suppose. If got enough ppl want the oil and grease, hopefully can get a proper quotation. At least 10 ppl is needed (per type). But the problem is distributing.. doh.gif

Like that might as well just buy from some foreign site..

Thanks for clarification. I've been thinking of opening the switch before but found out that I can't do that on my board without desoldering. The plate mount switch which is removable without soldering is due to the special plate designed for phantom keyboard.

Anyway, I'm thinking of getting a 60% board for portable traveling.  smile.gif  Anyone know how much do I have to prepare for each component roughly? If possible, I would like the most basic one cause I don't think I would want to bring it out if it's too expensive.

I'm thinking of using gateron switches. Last time I calculated the cost for 1 switch including shipping from taobao would cost around rm1 per switch roughly. So i guesss it's roughly rm60-rm80 there.

Is it cheaper to get a ready made 60% board or is it cheaper to get a custom board?

Cloud8992 is doing Gaterons GB, price pretty good, go take a look.

per type?
meaning 5 different types of grade oil/grease?
or can it be 2oz x 5 of the same grade oil/grease?

i'm in for 10-20g of GPL 107 if you need any numbers of interested ppl.
FYI, GON is selling USD$11 for ~9-10g for GPL 103 or GPL 107.
if we can get the price cheaper than that, then it's justifiable.
but of course, distribution also headache since need to get proper bottle containers  doh.gif

alternatively, we can try to share shipping from GON haha!
*
example: GPL 105 2oz x 5 bottle, then GPL 100 2oz x 5 bottles.
Really crazy amount though, and many people have different preference of lubing their switches.

Share shipping from GON is a good idea.. But he only got 103 and 107.

i have GPL 104, and personally i think it's a bit too low in it's viscosity.
and i heard from a very reliable source that GPL 107 itself is very good.
2oz x 5 is about 283gm?
need at least 14 ppl to take 20g each and maximum of 28 ppl to take 10g each  doh.gif  rclxub.gif  laugh.gif
*
For this project, I need GPL 105 or above and 205. tactile switch (MX clears) need slightly more viscous lube right? rclxub.gif

That day 016 mentioned he personally like 107 for linear, and suggested 203/205 for tactile.

ahh, you are tactile user.
i'm not too sure about mx clears d, and i didn't use krytox's grease before, so i've no idea about that haha!

i have mx clears on my ergo dox, but i'm not sure if the housing has issue or because i didn't lube the stem, it sometimes can be..."stucky".
i need to find some time to test out different lube on my mx clears.
reason why i didn't lube it is because i want to get maximum tactile from the mx clears.
*
Hahaha, I'll consult the some big God of tuning probably.
If the GONs buy, you on I also on.. Can share shipping biggrin.gif

Is it retarded to desolder switches? That's new to me. sweat.gif  I thought to change a switch or open the housing from a normal plate mounted switch, you have to desolder the switch? or am I missing something here or misunderstood your sentence?

Anyway, I know hard pounding on the key will lead to more flexing therefore the keyboard will probably will not be suitable for gaming, but I have no intention of gaming with it yet. For now the purpose is for normal typing and portability as well as a cheap investment to test out gateron switches. smile.gif
*
I just did a search around, and I couldn't find many results of 60% mass produced keyboard with Gaterons. The closest thing is probably Nano 75, the Noppoo one usually use Cherry and other clones. If you just search "Nano 75 Gaterons", something will pop up in those Chinese forum explaining about it.

Like you said, cheap investment, then don't think aluminum case already, will add a lot more to the cost. I think plate mount is the way to do it now, only very less keyboards are pcb mounted nowadays, except you really want to find it on GH. Just do a basic build with the Gateron switch you want to try, go with plate mount option, plastic case, no LED, and maybe a set of nicer (thicker) key caps and never regret your portable kit. Aluminum case also will make it much heavier, and you might not be happy bringing it around. Just my 2cents, I'm still a noob, just trying to help you make a choice.

I am looking for a mechanical keyboard but there are a large variety of mechanical keyboard in the market. Could anyone suggest which keyboard should I get?

By the way,I would be using this keyboard more often in typing and programming.
*
Please refer the first post for suggestions. If you're more to typing, go with either tactile switches or maybe Topre, linears need some time to get used to, and "generally" more preferred for gaming, not entirely. MX blue is most popular if not mistaken(it's everywhere), but it is an clicky switch(first post explained that), and it's pretty noisy to be used in a quiet environment let's say office.

Then the other option will be MX brown, many prefer this over the blue because it's tactile, not clicky, less noisy, but still have that satisfying bump when pressed down. Topre I haven't try before, just imagine it as a common rubber dome switch on steroids, some user will say Topre > all, but it all comes down to self preference.

Best is go try in a shop that have display unit, I find that a switch tester will not give you the whole image of typing on a keyboard, rather just to show you the difference in feel. Hope some other sifu can give more input.

Aiyah. Looking for costar stabiliser. :S

I think costar stabilizer is 平衡轴, direct translate as "balance" stabilizer? Haha, just direct translate from Chinese. As for the G轴, need to ask expert..

do you like different keycaps?

if yes, probably you should consider cherry stabilizers as changing keycaps on costar stabs is a tad more inconvenient compared to cherry stabs.
though it's undeniable that costar stabs is excellent in giving the best, natural, and unrestricted feel for 2u or longer keys BUT just a bit harder to change those longer keycaps.
at the same time, original unmodded cherry stabs feels a bit mushy and unnatural, BUT it's a breeze to change them keys.
but with a modded cherry stabs, you can get an almost natural feel like the costar stabs. something for you to consider.
*
Natural feel, you mean the mod of cutting the extra thin stems and file it flat?

yeap, clipping mod does wonders to cherry stabilizers. i can testify to that because i mod that on my ducky and it feels wonderful now.
i didn't file it flat though, just clip it in a way that it's bottom surface is flat.
from the looks of it, it makes more sense if it means Gateron switch. kecian kita pisang-pisang.
*
Yeah yeah. Should also work.

I no not pisang also cannot be sure what they state.

Was looking at the B.mini and the B.miniR. Anyone used em before? I understand the need for diodes, but are resistors necessary as well?
*
Even though I don't have a B.mini/R, as I can see in the picture from winkeyless.kr, no resistors or diodes were soldered, and in the option list, they did list both options.

Fair enough. Going for two keyboards. 1 for home 1 for office. Parts I've more or less decided on for the office keyboard:-

Office
Chengal wood case
Acryllic plate
Gateron black
DSA keycaps
B.mini pcb
Cherry stabilisers
Teensy 2.0 controller
1N4148W diodes

Am I missing anything from the list?
*
Chengal wood case, sounds interesting to me.. biggrin.gif

Yes it does. But I won't know what to do with the acrylic case as I only need a plate at the moment.
I have no facilities or equipment lol. However, I have found someone on LYN with a laser cutting machine to cut the keyboard although he is more into PC modding than keyboard modding. The principles should be the same? Thanks for the help though, much appreciated! smile.gif That is a very nice keyboard btw. Love what people do to their keyboards. Maybe people start making custom mouse next?

Currently, I am planning on experimenting with different materials for casing. A bit ambitious as I haven't even started on my first keyboard but one can always dream. tongue.gif
*
Well, know what material you're playing with. Cutting wood is a little tricky, I've used to cut those small F1 cars(F1 in school) out of wooden block(very low density wood), it's very easy to get burnt, hard wood might be a little different but I can predict the edges probably will have very slight burnt mark or appear darker. Well, that's with my experience on a old CNC machine few years back.

Laser cutting? Laser cutting wood? Can meh? Laser only can etch wood only wor, if cut, means cut through one for laser, too thick also cannot cut through. It cannot like cut to certain depth like CNC, except if you're talking about the plate. Need very precise design, or else the switch cannot mount properly. Just my 2cents.
