ISIS has nothing to do with IS says Shahidan
KUALA LUMPUR: The Institute for Strategic and International Studies Malaysia (ISIS) and has nothing to do with the terror group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (IS), said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim.
"The Government's official stance is that the Institute for Strategic and International Studies Malaysia (ISIS) has nothing to do with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria as widely reported in the international media," he said in reply to a supplementary question from Datuk Norah Abd Rahman (BN-Tanjong Manis) on Thursday.
Norah had asked the government whether it intends to change the name of the Institute as the acronym ISIS is often associated with terrorist activities of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
The institute, Shahidan explained, had been established for more than 30 years.
"Since then it has been known as ISIS Malaysia by everyone from within and outside of the country," he said.
He said ISIS Malaysia had played a role in fostering regional cooperation through strategic works and studies with other ASEAN countries including with Brunei, Laos, Myanmar, and Singapore among others.
"ISIS Malaysia is well-recognised not only by governments but also the private sector locally and internationally," he added.
The government, said Shahidan, was serious in making efforts to stop terrorism activities including by tabling the Prevention of Terrorism Act in Parliament.
"We hope that the act will stop more people from joining terrorism activities and at the same time will win the heart of those who have yet to join any terrorism activities," he said.
