Chinese shipbuilders have completed three advanced nuclear-propelled submarines that can fire the latest vertically launched anti-ship missiles, local media reported.  Satellite pictures broadcast last week by China Central Television showed three submarines anchored at an unidentified port, China Daily reported.

The vessels were reported to be Type-093G submarines just completed by a shipyard and ready to be delivered to the Navy of the People’s Liberation Army.  Type-093G is an advanced version of Type-093, China’s second-generation nuclear-powered attack submarines. Compared to the relatively short 110-m regular variant, the Type-093G has a longer hull to make room for a vertical launch system, the report said. 

The launchers are designed to fire YJ-18, the vertically launched version of China’s YJ-12 supersonic anti-ship missile, according to the Navy’s website. The advanced missile can reportedly carry a 300-kilogram warhead to a range over 200 kilometers and is capable of performing maneuvers at speeds of up to Mach 3 just before hitting its target. 

The Type-093G submarine also has improved speed and mobility, and reduced noise compared to the regular version, the website said.  PLA’s Navy is believed to have up to six Type-093 submarines currently in service in addition to three older Type-091s. A new Type-095 submarine is currently in development. China also reportedly has four Type-094 ballistic missile submarines carrying JL-1 or JL-2 nuclear missiles.

Indonesia mulls buying Japan’s US-2 amphibious aircraft, defense chief says

Indonesian Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu said Monday his government is considering the possibility of buying the US-2 amphibious aircraft from Japan.

“We feel (there’s a match) and we wish to buy. We’re still mulling (this), and if we already finish (the assessment) we will report to the president about this,” Ryacudu said in an interview.

The US-2 is built by ShinMaywa Industries Ltd., based in Hyogo Prefecture.

The Indonesian defense minister said the US-2 is well suited for the geographical conditions of Indonesia, a country of thousands of islands.

Noting that both Japan and Indonesia are archipelagic countries that frequently have to contend with natural disasters like earthquakes, he said, “Geographically, we are in the ‘ring of fire,’ so we learn from Japan in terms of disaster management.”

Indonesia is seeking to strengthen its maritime forces, sea patrol functions and search and rescue operations in surrounding waters.

The US-2 can land on and take off from the sea. The aircraft is already in use by the Self-Defense Forces.

In March, Japan and Indonesia signed a defense agreement that stipulates cooperation in several sectors, including maritime cooperation and disaster management.

The US-2 is expected to be on the agenda when the two countries launch “two-plus-two” security talks between their defense and foreign ministers, according to diplomatic sources.

India is also considering purchasing the US-2.

Meanwhile, Indonesia is also assessing the possibility of purchasing the Be-200 multipurpose amphibious aircraft from Russia, with Ryacudu scheduled to go to Russia on April 14.

Prawit off to China to build defence ties

Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon will visit China on Wednesday, and a Defence Ministry source said a planned submarine purchase is in line for discussions with Beijing.

Defence Ministry spokesman Maj Gen Kongcheep Tuntrawanich said on Sunday the minister's trip will last from Wednesday to Friday and comes at the invitation of China's Defence Minister Chang Wanquan.

It is his second visit to China in six months and the third meeting between the two ministers.

Gen Prawit went to China in October and Gen Chang returned the favour by coming to Bangkok in February to propose closer military ties between the two countries. Relations between Thailand and China have been strengthened since the military coup last year when Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha took over as Thailand's leader.

This time Gen Prawit will take with him all military commanders, including navy chief ADM Kraisorn Chansuwanich, to China for the first time.

A ministry source said the two countries are expected to hold talks on the Thai plan to re-equip the Royal Thai Navy fleet with two diesel-engine submarines after the last fleet was decommissioned in 1951.

The budget for the modernisation of the navy is around 36 billion baht.

The Yuan Class submarine is on Thailand's possible purchasing list. Other potential sellers of underwater craft are Germany and South Korea.

The navy renewed a push to buy two submarines late last year with strong support from the defence minister, and China has offered its version with financing which could be repaid in 10 years.

Gen Prawit and Gen Chang will seek plans to foster defence ties by holding more joint exercises between their army, navy and air force which now are held separately twice a year, the source said.

The defence minister will meet ACM Xu Qiliang, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Chinese Communist Party, Chinese Deputy Premier Zhang Gaoli and Meng Jianzhu, a politburo member.

Indonesian Airforce Plans to Revitalize Defense Armaments

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) plans to revitalize its' arms capacity to assist its' efforts to protect Indonesia's airspace.

TNI AU's Chief of Staff Air Marshall Agus Supriatna said that as per December 2014, TNI AU has a fleet consisting of 16 units of Sukhoi SU-30 jets, and five units of F-16s.

"In the future, we would like to be able to better prepare an early warning strategy that could cover our entire airspace," said Supriatna after the rehearsal for the TNI AU's Anniversary Procession at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, in East Jakarta on Tuesday, April 7, 2015.

TNI AU is also aiming to procure more radars, which will allow it to cover Indonesia's entire jurisdiction - all the way from Sabang to Merauke.

The Chief of Staff said that in order to do so, 32 radars are needed - to date, TNI AU only has 22 radars to cover Indonesia's entire area. "Two more radars are due to be delivered this year. As the amount of radars in our possession rises, we could cover more of our territories," said Supriatna.

TNI AU also proposed the procurement of two new types of new generation combat air crafts - Russian-made Sukhoi SU-35 and United States (US) manufactured F-16 Block 70 - to replace the obsolete F-5 combat jets.

"We have tried out the new generation jets, and we have concluded that these jets are far more capable than the current air crafts in our possession," said Supriatna, who added that they have filed a formal recommendation to the Ministry of Defense and is awaiting the results of the Ministry's deliberation.

"We will not buy an entire squadron - but we will procure them in increments. This is due to the fact that it takes time for the manufacturers to create a combat jet," said Supriatna. "If, for instance, a manufacturer is capable of making 20 jets in a particular year, then not all of them will be delivered to Indonesia - the amount that we can procure is highly dependent on bilateral negotiations between the stakeholders."

Russia, Indonesia begin talks on Sukhoi Su-35 deliveries

Indonesia has taken an interest in buying Russia's brand new multirole fighter jet Sukhoi Su-35, United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) head Yuri Slyusar told Interfax in Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday.

"Indonesian colleagues are interested in buying this plane. The negotiations are at their beginning," Slyusar said.

It was reported earlier that the Indonesian Air Force wished to replace outdated U.S. fighters F5 by Russian multirole fighters of generation 4++ Sukhoi Su-35.

"Hopefully, the national government will grant our wish to buy Sukhoi Su-35 fighters. As combat aircraft operators, we would like to have fighters of a more advanced generation, 4++," the Indonesian state news agency ANTARA quoted Air Chief Marshal Agus Supriatna as saying.

In his words, Sukhoi Su-35 aircraft fully meet the Indonesian Air Force demand for armaments. Supriatna said he was not expecting Indonesian technicians to have problems servicing those aircraft.

The eleventh squadron of the Indonesian Air Force is flying five one-seat Sukhoi Su-27SK and eleven two-seat Su-30MK2.

Sukhoi Su-35 was designed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau. It is a profoundly modernized super-maneuverable multirole fighter jet of generation 4++ employing fifth-generation technologies which makes it superior to other jets in its class.

Su-35 boasts new avionics based on a digital data control system, a new radar station with phased antenna array, a longer range of target detection and a bigger number of simultaneously locked and engaged targets, and new engines with bigger thrust and thrust-vector control.

In the opinion of experts, Su-35 has much better performance characteristics compared to other jets in its class, and its avionic systems are capable of accomplishing broader missions. The plane is superior to all tactical fighter of generations 4 and 4+ Rafale and EF 2000 and modernized fighters F-15, F-16, F-18 and F-35. It can also counteract F-22A.

The primary buyer of the new fighter jet is the Russian Defense Ministry, which signed a contract for the procurement of 48 Su-35 fighters in 2009.
