Some 3,000 U.S. military personnel as well as American “air, land, sea, and special operations components” have moved into the Persian Gulf region for a military exercise that coincides with the finalization of a nuclear agreement with Iran aimed at containing its nuclear arms program, according to officials from U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). 

The exercise, known as Eagle Resolve, has been taking place in Kuwaiti waters since March 8 and will run through the end of the month, when the United States is expected to announce a tentative framework agreement with Iran that is to serve as the final step toward a nuclear agreement. 

This year’s exercise, which is taking place off Iran’s southern coast, “is the biggest to date,” according to a readout of the exercise provided by CENTCOM officials. Military representatives from more than a dozen U.S. allies are supporting the exercise.

ERBIL, Iraqi Kurdistan- At least 30,000 Iranian soldiers and military experts are in Iraq and involved in the fight against ISIS,  a Kurdish lawmaker in the Iraqi parliament said Sunday, calling it a “threat to Iraq’s sovereignty.” 

“At least 30,000 soldiers and military experts from the Islamic Republic of Iran are fighting ISIS militants in Iraq,” Shakhawan Abdullah, head of the parliamentary security and defense committee, told Rudaw.  Shiite Iran has been actively involved in neighbor Iraq’s security issues, since ISIS overran large parts of the country with the aim of establishing a  Sunni-Islamic caliphate. 

Abdulla said the formidable Iranian presence in the country is a “threat to Iraq’s sovereignty.” He explained that, “Although their presence in Iraq has been known, especially after the Tikrit operation, some of them dress up as Iraqi Shiite militants from the Hashd al-Shaabi militia.”

As head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps' Quds Force, Suleimani is responsible for coordinating the activities of Iran's various proxy militias around the Middle East. This is a particularly important job nowadays, thanks in no small part to Suleimani himself.

According to Smyth, who has collected scores of Suleimani photos passed around the Shi'ite militant web, Shi'ite sectarian social media has a "top-down" structure, with talking points "run out of far more centralized places" than on the Sunni jihadist web. And users have been trying to evoke a very specific image of the Quds Force commander. 

"They try to promote Qassam on the whole as a brave and honorable leader who's kicking it to the Americans, who's kicking it to ISIS, and who's projecting the true power of the Islamic Revolution across the region," Smyth told Business Insider.

As Smyth explains, Suleimani's carefully cultivated persona — the image of a supernaturally talented and religiously-blessed military super-genius that can out-think a range of more powerful foes — helps close that gap. 

"Projection is not just about military force. It's also about perception," Smyth said. "If you're Iran and the rising power in the region and you want to stick it to the US, Israel, and Saudi Arabia — large military entities in the region that you consider your foes — there's no better way to do it."
