South Korean submarines a new threat to China: Strategy Page

After creating a new Submarine Command in February, the South Korean navy's submarine fleet has become a potential threat to the maritime security of China, writes Strategy Page.

The ROK submarine fleet consists of nine Type 209 and four Type 2014 diesel-electric submarines. By the end of this decade, five additional Type 214 submarine will be commissioned as well. The South Korean navy established its new Submarine Command with the purpose of developing better anti-submarine warfare capabilities against North Korea and China. In addition, this organization purely run by submarine officers is expected to be more resistant to corruption.

The People's Navy of North Korea has 70 submarines in service, but 70% of them are small and obsolete vessels designed to patrol the coastal region. It has 20 Romeo-class submarines purchased from the former Soviet Union, which are much bigger in size. However, the 1,800-ton submarines were built during the Cold War era and are very loud underwater. South Korean subs can easily track and deal with Romeo-class submarines, according to the report.

Equipped with the Haeseong-3 cruise missile, which has an attack range of 1,500 kilometers, South Korea's Type 214 submarine, also known as the Son Won-Il class submarine, is capable of hitting any land targets within North Korea. Like the US Tomahawk cruise missile, the Haeseong-3 can be launched from the Type 214. South Korea's first three 1,700-ton Type 214 submarines are able to stay underwater for up to two weeks, ten times longer than the Type 209s.

The second batch of Type 214s, consisting of six boats, will be equipped with air-independent propulsion systems and will be able to operate underwater for a longer period of time, said the report. South Korea is likely to become a supplier of AIP systems as well as the country has gained experience in developing the technology through the production of Type 214 submarines. This is what makes the Republic of Korea a real potential threat to the People's Liberation Army Navy, the report said.

Indonesia in New Order was staunchly anti communist, you'll have big trouble for just drawing sickle and hammer symbol for fun. US and Australia lobbied Indonesia to invade East Timor, because it is threatened to be a socialist state under Fretilin.

Suharto was confident, if he has US and Australia support...nothing could go wrong.

But finally, Cold War ends and economic crisis strikes...war against communism was no longer relevant. Australia seized the opportunity to behave like liberators, while Indonesia was reeling from economic disaster.

Then, they ended up grabbing much of oil/gas reserves in Timor Sea...Timor Leste will run out of reserves in 2024.

Timorese in Indonesia's West Timor now has influx of billions of dollars each year from sustainable non-oil sources, while their brothers in Timor Leste could become a failing state, because 95 percent of income is still from oil

Pentagon says US planes keep distance from Chinese 'islands' - for now

user posted image

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US surveillance aircraft and naval ships have yet to test China's territorial claims around artificial islands built in the South China Sea, but the Pentagon warned on Thursday that could be "the next step."

Although the United States does not recognise China's claims of sovereignty around the man-made structures, American P-8 surveillance planes and naval vessels patrolling the area have not ventured within 12 nautical miles of the artificial islands - the standard territorial zone around natural land.

"That would be the next step," Pentagon spokesman Colonel Steven Warren told reporters.

Asked if the military would move to within that sensitive zone, he said: "We don't have any announcement to make on next steps. We are going to continue our routine flights."

Russian and Chinese navy conclude first Mediterranean joint exercise

Chinese sailors salute the passing Slava-class cruiser Moskva at the conclusion of the Russia-Chinese Navy joint exercises in the Mediterranean

Russia and China concluded their first-ever joint naval exercise in the Mediterranean Sea on Friday.

The naval drill code-named “Joint Sea 2015” was held from May 17 to 21 and involved nine ships from both countries.

On the Russian side, ships participating in the exercise were the Moskva, the leadship of the Slava-class of guided missile cruisers, the Burevestnik-class frigate Ladny, the Bora-class hoverborne guided missile corvette Samum, the Ropucha-class landing ship Alexander Shabalin (designed for beach landings and capable of carrying a 450-ton cargo), and an older ship of the same class, the Alexander Otrakovsky, as well as a MB-31 tugboat.

On the Chinese side, the vessels involved were fewer in number but consisted of more modern ships including two Type 054A frigates, the Linyi and Weifang. The third Chinese vessel to participate in Joint Sea 2015 was the Type 903 replenishment ship Weishanhu.

According to Interfax, the navies practiced underway replenishment and escort operations. Russian Ministry of Defense spokesman for the Navy Captain 1st Class Igor Dygalo told Interfax that, “the combined naval group of Russia and China practiced underway replenishment, cargo transfer and escorting missions during the daylight period of May 19.”

“Russian Navy and the Navy of the People’s Liberation Army of China ships held a joint practice of maritime escorts today, in a drill episode simulating the protection of safe shipping in remote areas of the World Ocean,” he added.

The Russian Navy’s deputy commander, Vice Admiral Alexander Fedotenkov, told reporters that the joint-task force accomplished their assignments with “excellent” marks.

Philippines aircraft to continue flying over disputed South China Sea: President Aquino

user posted image

MANILA - The Philippines will continue to contest China's no-fly zones over a chain of rapidly expanding man-made islands in the South China Sea, President Benigno Aquino said on Monday.

“We will still fly the routes that we fly based on international law and the various agreements and treaties we have entered into through various decades,” Mr Aquino told reporters outside the capital Manila.

But he also expressed confidence that China would exercise restraint, even as it asserts control of airspace over at least seven reefs it occupies in the Spratly island chain in the South China Sea.

“We would not want to think that one nation will single us out because it has yet to declare an ADIZ (Air Defence Identification Zone) covering routes that our carriers use,” said Mr Aquino.

Malaysia summons Philippine official over claim on Sabah

The Malaysian government has summoned Philippine Charge d'Affaires Medardo G Macaraig over remarks made by President Benigno S Aquino on Philippines' claim on Sabah.

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said on Sunday it had summoned the Philippine Charge d'Affaires Medardo G Macaraig on May 19 over the remarks made by President Benigno S Aquino.

The Philippine President had remarked on Philippines' claim on Sabah in an interview by Ms Raissa Robles for the South China Morning Post on May 15.

In the interview, President Aquino had stated that he would not drop Philippine's claim to Sabah, contrary to what critics of his centerpiece legislation on Muslim autonomy - the Bangsamoro Basic Law - are saying.

Malaysia's MFA on Sunday reiterated in a statement "its position that Malaysia does not recognise and will not entertain any claims by any party on Sabah".

It added that Sabah is recognised by the United Nations and international community as part of Malaysia since Sep 16, 1963.
