QUOTE "Letter of Award for NSM ships equipment with Malaysian Boustead Naval Shipyard Sdn Bhd" KONGSBERG has received a Letter of Award worth approx. 20 MEUR with Boustead Naval Shipyard Sdn Bhd (BN Shipyard) in Malaysia, for NSM (Naval Strike Missile) ships equipment. BN Shipyard is to design, build and deliver six (6) Littoral Combat Ships for the Royal Malaysian Navy based on the DCNS “Gowind class” design. The first ship is scheduled for delivery in 2020. KONGSBERGs delivery is to prepare for NSM onboard the ships and consists of necessary fixed installations such as launchers, cables, electronics and integration to the combat management system SETIS to be provided by DCNS. “This agreement with Boustead Naval Shipyard is to prepare the future Royal Malaysian Littoral Combat Ships for NSM and confirms NSMs very strong competitiveness in the international market. Malaysia is the third user of this modern 5thgeneration anti-surface weapon”, says Harald Ånnestad, President of Kongsberg Defence Systems. ![]() http://www.navyrecognition.com/index.php?o...sk=view&id=2590 |

QUOTE Malaysia reveals plans for Laksamana-class corvette upgrades The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) has given further details of the proposed service life extension programme (SLEP) for its Laksamana (ASSAD)-class corvettes. The plans, which include a replacement of the ships' surface-to-surface missile launchers and fire-control radar, were outlined by Commander Badarudin Bin Taha, a staff officer from the RMN's plans development division, during the fifth annual OPVs & Corvettes Asia Pacific conference in Singapore. Other components of the SLEP include replacing the ships' active search and navigation radar, heavy machine guns, combat management system, electronic support measures and integrated bridge and platform management systems. Also being considered for upgrade are the vessels' 105 mm chaff launchers and identification friend-or-foe interrogator. www.janes.com/article/50801/malaysia-reveals-plans-for-laksamana-class-corvette-upgrades |

QUOTE(KYPMbangi @ Apr 29 2015, 08:03 AM) Another political acquisition? C-802 in kambing?Malaysian Navy mulls Chinese kit for Laksamana-class upgrades ![]() A senior official from the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) has confirmed to IHS Jane's that the service is considering installing Chinese-made equipment on its Laksamana-class corvettes. The RMN has proposed to the Malaysian government a service life extension programme (SLEP) for the four ships, which were commissioned between July 1997 and July 1999. The official declined, however, to give further details on systems being considered, adding only that all options are being considered (including weapons and combat systems). IHS Jane's reported on 20 April that the RMN is looking to replace the ships' surface-to-surface missile launchers, fire-control radar, machine guns, combat management system, electronic support measures, and integrated bridge and platform management systems. Also being considered for upgrade are the corvettes' 105 mm chaff launchers and identification friend-or-foe interrogator. Besides being armed with an Oto Melara 76/62 Super Rapid main gun and two Breda twin 40 mm cannons, the Laksamana-class vessels are fitted for Otomat anti-ship and Aspide surface-to-air missiles, according to IHS Jane's Fighting Ships . However the missile systems currently are non-operational. ![]() A poster displayed at LIMA 2015 by CSOC, outlining some of its recent ship upgrade projects The scope of any upgrade work will be determined by the available budget, under the five-year government funding allocations known as the Malaysia Plan. The RMN said in January that it had requested funding for 36 programmes under the 11th Malaysia Plan, which will cover the period 2016-20. The request, which includes plans to upgrade the Kedah- and Laksamana-class corvettes, would cost about MYR10.1 billion (USD2.79 billion). [Janes] btw the cost is that much ke This post has been edited by OvenBaked: Apr 29 2015, 12:57 PM |

QUOTE(alaskanbunny @ Apr 29 2015, 02:10 PM) and they still jilatz unker sam Millions still suffering from Vietnam War's aftermath, 40 years on ![]() As the world marks the 40th anniversary of the Vietnam War on Thursday (Apr 30), millions of victims of Agent Orange - the chemical used by the US military during the war - are still grappling with its ill effects. UNG HOA, Vietnam: It has been four decades of peace in Vietnam since the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, but for about three million victims of Agent Orange - the chemical sprayed over rural areas by the American troops - the ordeal is far from over. Among them is 14-year-old Dat. For him and his mother, meal time is a daily challenge, as the teenager often chokes and struggles whenever he stretches his deformed limbs. “Other children can walk and go to school, but not my son," said Dat's mother, Hien. "His limbs got more twisted when he turned three. The doctor told me he has cerebral palsy.” Dat's father, Khoa, also suffers from joint problems. He traces his son's as well as his own disorder to his father’s exposure to Agent Orange, used by the US military during the Vietnam War, after which he was conceived. Unlike Khoa, his four brothers and sisters are all healthy, and so are their children. “I’m the only one like this,” he said. ![]() AGENT ORANGE Between 1961 and 1972, the US military sprayed huge swathes of Vietnam with the herbicide to drive the communist forces out of the forest. Exposure to Agent Orange, which contains the carcinogen dioxin, is linked to birth defects and a long list of severe illnesses, from diabetes to cancer. A signboard near Da Nang Airport in Vietnam, which warns people of Dioxin contamination. (Photo: Hoang Dinh Nam/AFP) Vietnam's laws do not provide specifically for third-generation victims of Agent Orange. Although Dat receives about US$40 every month from a government fund for the disabled, it is not enough for his monthly medical bills. Still, it is the only source of regular income for the family, which otherwise they will have to rely on donations from relatives. His mother stays home as his full-time caregiver, while his father is unemployed. Several years ago, his father had to quit his job after the pain in his joints became too severe. ![]() NO COMPENSATION Ung Hoa is one of Vietnam’s rural areas where Agent Orange has left its indelible mark. According to the local Agent Orange association, about 3,000 victims live in the town, while the number of third-generation victims remains unknown. According to the Vietnam Association for Victims of Agent Orange (VAVA) in Hanoi, only 10 per cent of the estimated three million Vietnamese exposed to Agent Orange receive government aid - a result of bureaucracy, poor medical infrastructure and limited funds. A victim of Agent Orange in Vietnam. (Photo: Hoang Dinh Nam/AFP) “We’re still poor,” said Dr Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong, who chairs Ho Chi Minh City’s Society for Reproductive Medicine. “The government cannot cover all the victims, many millions of them.” Help for the victims is tied to Vietnam’s economy. “Financial support for Agent Orange victims really depends on the country’s economic development," said Nguyen The Luc, general secretary of VAVA. "As the country moves forward, we can gradually increase their aid.” The US government has invested in a US$40 million clean-up project in Da Nang, and offers funding for general disability in Vietnam. However, the victims do not get compensation from the chemical companies that manufactured Agent Orange, which include Monsanto and Dow Chemical. These companies have denied the herbicide’s link to health problems in Vietnam. - CNA/pp |

What a waste
QUOTE France may scuttle Mistral ships rather than fulfill Russian contract ![]() The Mistral heli carrier which were supposed to be delivered to Russia are causing the French a headache. However, rather than handing them over, the French government may send them to the bottom of the sea, if the contract is canceled. France was supposed to have received €1.12 billion ($1.25 billion) from Moscow for the sale of two state-of-the-art warships. However, under pressure from the US and EU the sale was postponed, perhaps indefinitely. An article in Le Figaro on Wednesday says that Paris may have to resort to sinking the helicopter carriers if the government refuses to honor the contract and deliver them to Russia. The first vessel, the Vladivostok, should have been handed over in November, but French President Francois Hollande said it would be postponed “until further notice.” “Among the possible course of actions which is being considered by the French government is the possibility of the helicopter ships being destroyed. They will be dismantled, remodeled or sunk in the open sea,” the French newspaper wrote, citing an unnamed officer, who is well informed about the current situation surrounding the warships.
