In ongoing unrest in Yemen, US 'loses track' of $500 Million USD worth of weapons

In the ongoing unrest that forced the United States to close its embassy in Sanaa, Yemen, last month also has caused Pentagon officials to admit that they’ve lost track of $500 million in military equipment, including helicopters, Humvees and ammunition, that it donated to the country, The Washington Post reports.

U.S. officials told the newspaper that they fear the “small arms, ammunition, night-vision goggles, patrol boats, vehicles and other supplies” may have slipped into the hands of Iranian-backed rebels or al-Qaida.

“We have to assume it’s completely compromised and gone,” an unnamed legislative aide on Capitol Hill told The Washington Post.

According to the newspaper, this is what is presumed missing:

• 1,250,000 rounds of ammunition
• 200 Glock 9 mm pistols
• 200 M-4 rifles
• 4 Huey II helicopters
• 2 Cessna 208 transport and surveillance aircraft
• 2 coastal patrol boats
• 1 CN-235 transport and surveillance aircraft
• 4 hand-launched Raven drones
• 160 Humvees
• 250 suits of body armor
• 300 sets of night-vision goggles

Although Indonesia and Malaysia is sometimes at odds, personnaly i wish if Malaysian economics getting well and can support your modernization programme

Airbus hands over first Philippine C295

The first of three Airbus C295 medium transport aircraft for the Philippine Air Force (PAF) has been delivered, the company announced on 18 March.

The aircraft was handed over in Seville, Spain, and "is now being ferried to the Philippines," Airbus said in a statement.

The delivery is five months ahead of schedule. The C295 was selected in 2014 for the DND's medium-lift aircraft requirement for three aircraft to replace the PAF's three Fokker F27 Friendship aircraft, which have been in service for more than 30 years.

The Philippine embassy in Madrid said in February that "progress on the two remaining airframes could see an August delivery for the next aircraft".

Boeing pins hopes on Malaysia order for boost to F/A-18 fighter jet

Praveen Menon
18 Hours Ago Reuters

LANGKAWI, Malaysia, March 18 (Reuters) - U.S plane manufacturer Boeing, in talks with Malaysia for the sale of 18 F/A-18 fighter jets, is pinning its hopes on an order to give a boost to the struggling product, executives of the planemaker said on Wednesday.

The F/A-18 model, French firm Dassault's Rafale, Swedish manufacturer Saab's Gripen, and European consortium Eurofighter's Typhoon are all being assessed by the Southeast Asian nation to replace it aging fleet of Russian MiG-29 fighters jets.

While the purchase was earlier expected by Malaysia to be completed this year, the country's recent fiscal troubles due to plunging oil and commodities prices means likely delays in placing the order, aviation executives have said.

"Given the current economic situation, we would not be surprised to see the acquisition delayed a bit more. But we remain in an active dialogue with the customer," Howard Berry, Boeing's vice president for F/A-18 international sales, told Reuters on the sidelines of an aviation conference in Langkawi.

Last month, Dassault Aviation said that it is in talks to supply 16 of the multi-role combat jets to Malaysia.

Malaysia's Air Force Chief General Roslan bin Saad said all options were being considered for replacing the MiG29s.

"When fighter jets come to a certain number of years, it's normal to look for options. We are talking about whether we should continue with these (MiG29) jets or not. Nothing is final yet," he said, adding that "affordability" was a key consideration.

A recent slump in oil prices has led to a depreciation of the Malaysian currency and weakened the economy of the net oil exporting nation.

Western defense contractors are chasing overseas sales to prevent their production lines halting due to cuts in domestic defence budgets.

Boeing is seeking sales for the F/A-18s, and is in competition to sell the jets in some countries. With the defence markets being fairly flat in the United States, the importance of international markets has increased. Fewer orders may force the manufacturer to look at winding down F/A-18 production in the future.

"There are not as many new fighter competitions. So even the small ones like Malaysia and Indonesia are very important to us," said James Armington, vice president for East Asia-Pacific business development for Boeing's defence unit.

Pentagon: We Are Losing Electronic Warfare Dominance

user posted image

QUOTE
On Tuesday, Deputy Defense Secretary Robert Work signed the Electronic Warfare Executive Committee into being. Led by Pentagon acquisition chief Frank Kendall and Admiral James Winnefeld, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the new committee was established to ensure that the United States stays competitive in the electromagnetic spectrum.

According to Work’s memo, the committee will seek to correct the fact that the Defense Department has "lost focus on electronic warfare at the programmatic and strategic level."

QUOTE
The Navy may purchase more Boeing EA-18G Growlers to improve its electronic warfare capabilities.  The F-35, a state-of-the-art fighter jet the US government spent $400 billion developing, was found to be highly vulnerable on its own, without the aid of electronic attack versions of the F-18, known as the Growler. If sent into combat without the Growler's support, the F-35s likely wouldn't survive in a fight against adversaries in the first days of war, according to Pentagon assessments.

The Navy was also able to find a number of design issues with its new class of littoral combat ships, including a highly flawed electronic warfare suite. To address such criticism, the Defense Department plans to construct an upgraded model of the LCS with improved EW systems, a new 3D radar, and multi-function sonar arrays.

QUOTE
U.S. Navy littoral combat ship USS Fort Worth  "It’s actually pretty clear what we need to do in many areas, but I’d say the scale of the EW problem today and the years of neglect make the remedy expensive," Kaminski said during a conference of the EW group, Association of Old Crows. "We also need something else besides money: We need senior level attention to the problem."

Senior level attention is what the committee hopes to provide, though Kendall told reporters that the $2 billion funding request is likely to go unfulfilled.  Defense Secretary Work is particularly concerned with missile defense systems.  "We need a demonstration…which can demonstrate to us that if someone throws a salvo of a hundred guided munitions [at us], we’ll be able to ride it out," Work said.

PLA expands its Type 093 midget submarine line

user posted image
in the South China Sea in August last year. (File photo/CNS)

Beijing has revealed a version of the Type 093 midget submarine, known as the 093T, suggesting that more vessels in this class may be produced, reports news website Cankao Xiaoxi.

The 093B midget submarine reportedly has a vertical launch system that can launch 16 missiles, including the supersonic anti-ship YJ-18 and the DH-10 cruise missile.

Such a submarine can carry up to nine special ops members and is ideal for covert transportation and surprise attack. It can also launch laser-guided missiles or sneak combat divers into military ports to perform recon or destroy high-value targets such as aircraft carriers or nuclear submarines.

The United States was developing a midget version of its Ohio-class submarines but reportedly stopped development after a fire in 2008. The submarines used a dry-deck shelter system which allows the midget submarine to dock completely inside of its larger cousin. The 093T submarine adapts a wet-deck shelter system, which means only two thirds of the submarine are secured to the mother submarine and the rest is exposed to water.

I don't think a nuclear-powered, 110 meter long submarine can be considered a 'midget' submarine. Shows how 'learned and informative' the writer of this article really is. The sub is actually is at par with US Navy Los Angeles-class submarines. laugh.gif

I think what is hampering actions, is our politician dont know how to react.. same situation to lahad datu incident/MH370

The military have voiced their concern but the top leader seem to least concern and more on their political survival

The matter is make worse, with malaysia relatively warm relationship with china. Basically, we see their action with suspicion but does not want to take provocative action against them. By right, Malaysia should develop pulau layang layang further to be a full land carier and also reclaim a few more place within the same area

Imagine putting a full air defence system on pulau layang layang or reclaim further into an offshore naval base,... China will be damm pissed laugh.gif

Pinoy... shitshole country.. They should have provoke the reclaim works by sending ships to disturb them. But what they do? Complain more than action

Could Iran's elite military force defeat ISIL?

The Islamic Republic's version of the Navy SEALs has emerged as a key player in the fight against ISIL

The U.S.-led coalition can’t defeat the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) alone. So Iran is taking the battle against ISIL into its own hands by deploying its elite military force, Al Quds, into Iraq.

But what exactly is the Al Quds force? Could they affect the fight against ISIL? And should the U.S. be wary of their involvement? AJ+’s Dena Takruri examines these questions and more.

I love it when people equate any SF force to "X country's equivalent of the Navy SEALs". Al-Quds Force is nothing of the sort, in fact it would be further from the truth.

Well, if you're playing the comparison game, Quds force is much more aligned with the Green Beret-type of operations: training of local militia forces, low-profile secret extraterritorial operations and providing advice & handling military supplies to friendly armies. Hardly the direct action specialists the Navy SEALs are. laugh.gif

I believe there were complaints on the owner's use of pictures for his postings as some were not used with permission. On another note I've checked my records and have no indication of me posting anything about MiG-29 hours that year and in any event if I remember correctly the MiG hours presentation was made way before 2012.

Side note for everyone: would be grateful if you're attributing anything to me, post a link, too many times people are claiming I wrote this or work/blog for publications/blogsites which I have nothing to do with, very difficult in my position when I'm associated with something I have nothing to do with tongue.gif
