SBY as patrol leader in East Timor, contacting headquarters to transport captured local guerilla leader. Combat president! Note, all rifles are Vietnam War M-16 surplus, delivered by US before the invasion, as their support for Indonesia to eradicate the socialist-inclined Fretilin

IS don't have those sort of advanced anti-tank weapons, it doesn't have an official sponsor country like Hezbollah(Iran) or various Syrian rebel groups (US/Saudi). From most videos it seems more of their anti-tank weapons consists of lower-grade weapons like RPG-7PVR, recoiless rifles or older ATGM like MILAN or Soviet AT-4 'Fagot' captured from moderate Syrian rebels.

Also, even monkey model M1 Abrams is probably better than many full-spec Russian tanks, just sayin'. biggrin.gif

New Russian Super Aircraft Carrier ‘Storm’ to Reform Russian Navy

user posted image

Krylovsky State Research Center (KRSC) came up with a scale model of a new aircraft carrier known as 23000 "Storm," daily newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta reported.

Russian Navy to Order New Warships to Strengthen Positions in Global Ocean

In addition to aircraft carriers built for the Russian Navy, the developers created an import version of the ship, which might be extremely interesting to many foreign customers.

The ship's power plant will be either a conventional power plant or a nuclear one, depending on potential customers' requirements, Rossiyskaya Gazeta said.

The new aircraft carrier has a displacement of 100,000 tons, is 330 meters in length, 40 meters in width and has a draft of 11 meters. The ship has a top speed of 30 kt and a sea-keeping performance of up to grade 7.

"Storm" can carry 90 deck-based aircraft for various combat missions. The carrier has two ramps and two electromagnetic catapults to launch aircraft from its deck.

To defend itself from aerial attacks, the aircraft carrier has air-defense missile and anti-torpedo defense systems.

Iran backs down, allows Yemen-bound cargo ship to be inspected by UN personnel in Djibouti

user posted image
The Amphibious Assault ship USS Iwo Jima is currently shadowing the Iranian cargo ship and its Naval escorts

Iran will allow the United Nations to inspect a Yemen-bound aid ship at the regional U.N. hub in Djibouti, Tehran's deputy foreign minister was quoted as saying on Wednesday, offering a chance to avert a showdown with Saudi-led forces.

Earlier in the day, the Iran Shahed's captain had said the ship was due to enter the Bab al-Mandeb strait linking the Gulf of Aden to the Red Sea, bypassing Djibouti on the Horn of Africa and heading for the Yemeni port of Hodaida.

"We have decided to dock our ship in Djibouti so the United Nations inspection protocol can take place," Hossein Amir Abdollahian was quoted as saying by the ISNA news agency.

Iran backs the dominant Houthi militia in Yemen's civil war while Saudi Arabia, Tehran's regional arch-rival, sees the Houthis as a threat and is leading air strikes on them to try to roll back their advances and reinstate Yemen's exiled president.

Iran has said the ship is carrying humanitarian aid for Yemeni civilians. Hodaida's port is under Houthi control. The saudi-led coalition suspects the ship is carrying weapons and military supplies.

The Saudi-led coalition controls the waters around Yemen and has enforced inspections on all shipments entering the country. It was not clear whether Saudi forces would allow the Iran Shahed to dock in Yemen even after a U.N. inspection.

Indonesia in New Order was staunchly anti communist, you'll have big trouble for just drawing sickle and hammer symbol for fun. US and Australia lobbied Indonesia to invade East Timor, because it is threatened to be a socialist state under Fretilin.

Suharto was confident, if he has US and Australia support...nothing could go wrong.

But finally, Cold War ends and economic crisis strikes...war against communism was no longer relevant. Australia seized the opportunity to behave like liberators, while Indonesia was reeling from economic disaster.

Then, they ended up grabbing much of oil/gas reserves in Timor Sea...Timor Leste will run out of reserves in 2024.

Timorese in Indonesia's West Timor now has influx of billions of dollars each year from sustainable non-oil sources, while their brothers in Timor Leste could become a failing state, because 95 percent of income is still from oil

IS militants capture ancient Syrian city of Palmyra, witnesses say soldiers and policemen fled after giving light resistance

user posted image
Syrian soldiers guarding the ruins of Palmyra. IS militants have since captured the city on Wednesday.

Islamic State militants swept into the desert city of Palmyra in central Syria on Wednesday, and by evening were in control of it, residents and Syrian state news media said, a victory that gives them another strategically important prize five days after the group seized the Iraqi city of Ramadi.

Palmyra has extra resonance, with its grand complex of 2,000-year-old colonnades and tombs, one of the world’s most magnificent remnants of Roman and Byzantine antiquity, as well as the grimmer modern landmark of Tadmur Prison, where Syrian dissidents have languished over the decades.

But for the fighters on the ground, the city of 50,000 people is significant because it sits among gas fields and astride a network of roads across the country’s central desert. Palmyra’s vast unexcavated antiquities could also provide significant revenue through illegal trafficking.

Control of Palmyra gives the Islamic State command of roads leading from its strongholds in eastern Syria to Damascus and the other major cities of the populated west, as well as new links to western Iraq, the other half of its self-declared caliphate.

The advance, in which residents described soldiers and the police fleeing, wounded civilians unable to reach hospitals and museum workers hurrying to pack up antiquities, comes even as the United States is scrambling to come up with a response to the loss of Ramadi, the capital of Iraq’s Anbar Province.

The two successes, at opposite ends of a battlefield sprawling across two countries, showed the Islamic State’s ability to shake off setbacks and advance on multiple fronts, less than two months after it was driven from the Iraqi city of Tikrit — erasing any notion that the group had suffered a game-changing blow.

It's widely believed that Sukarno's downfall and Suharto's rise to power is supported by UK and US intelligence service. Communism was integrated deep in Indonesia's society at the time....Nasakom: Nasionalisme, Agama, Komunisme.

That's why Suharto was really pro-west.

It's one of the biggest, forgotten Western Bloc victory in Cold War. Deeply rooted communism in a country many times bigger than Vietnam, can be eradicated without shedding a single drop of blood from western soldiers.

Under new order regime, Indonesia was really communist-phobe...even compared to United States. Can be branded communist just because voicing labor and peasant rights.....

It's not only widely believed, but it was in fact an open secret that the Gestapu (gerakan September 30) movement to oust Sukarno and assasinate/arrest his top military generals was a blatant CIA-orchestrated coup to install a pro-west dictator in Suharto.

The thinly-veiled excuse that communists were grabbing power was all smokescreen. No coincidence Suharto was suddenly spared when virtually all his to top-ranking colleagues (read:potential rivals) was purged. The official reason that he was visiting his sick son in hospital and the soldiers sent to arrest /kill him couldn't find him at his home doesn't fly. Obviously the killers would know every movement of each of their targets on the night of the coup except, by magic, Suharto.
