Tak paham, bigger than izumo? Or bigger than Nimitz class?

The design is an evolution of the Hyuga/Ise helicopter carriers, and the larger, follow-on 22DDH series. Note Hyuga on top and this new carrier on the bottom. The picture with the Green Shirt says that this ship would use steam catapults–apparently just two. Another picture says the ship would be powered by General Electric LM2500 gas turbine engines, the same used in USS Arleigh Burke-class destroyers and JS Atago-class Aegis destroyers. The engines are built under license in Japan by Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries. I can’t determine how many engines the carrier is supposed to have, but 3 LM2500s would give the ship roughly 90,000 shipboard horsepower. (Compare with USS Nimitz at 100,000 tons and 260,000 horsepower, and USS America at 45,000 tons and 70,000 horsepower.) Perhaps you’d want a fourth LM2500 to generate steam for the catapults.  Ship length is 285 meters, or 935 feet. This is just slightly longer than HMS Queen Elizabeth, but about 70 feet shorter than the PLAN’s ex-Varyag. I think we can safely put this in the same displacement category as Queen Elizabeth, or 65,000 tons.

Japan to test fly F-3 stealth fighter this summer

user posted image

QUOTE
The highly anticipated F-3, Japan's first domestically-made stealth jet, is aiming to conduct test flights this summer, reports the PLA Daily, a China-based media outlet for the People's Liberation Army.  If the tests are successful, the F-3 will represent a breakthrough for Japan in terms of stealth capabilities and high-powered engine technology, the report said.

The advanced fifth-generation fighter, which originates from Japan's advanced technology demonstrator-experimental (ATD-X) program, has been designed to deliver superior performance in the four major quality indicators of stealth, supersonic cruise capability, maneuverability and integrated avionics systems.

US Army’s New Self-Propelled Howitzer Follows 20 Years of Delays

user posted image

While the Paladin Integrated Management (PIM) program’s M109A7 “is not a truly new vehicle, in that it borrows from others,” according to one Hill staffer who spoke to Breaking Defense, the new artillery vehicle “is still a success.”

Success of any kind is welcomed by the beleaguered Army acquisition system, which has a track record of canceled programs and wasted billions dating to before 9/11.

The PIM – built by Britain-based contractor BAE Systems – was created by taking the gun turret that was upgraded by previous programs, and installing it on an all-new chassis.

Previous programs “built a new turret and put it on the old chassis,” said Mark Signorelli, head of combat vehicle programs at BAE Systems. “M109A7 put a new chassis under the A6 turret, with a few upgrades to the turret, and effectively in two steps the Army built a new howitzer.”

While the PIM continues to use the same gun as the older artillery piece, it essentially a new weapon system from the bearing ring on down – one that comes with digital displays and a 70 kilowatt, 600-volt on-board power system.

Signorelli is a veteran of the Army’s cancelled Future Combat Systems and Ground Combat Vehicle programs, which attempted to develop entirely new designs.

“When you have one of these big bang programs … it’s hugely expensive, it takes forever and it’s risky,” he told Breaking Defense. “When you do this Lincoln’s axe approach, you can … put the modernization in bite-size packages, so you’ve got a high probability that you can get the work done on schedule, on budget.”

While the PIM’s new automotive and electrical systems make it 25% heavier than its predecessor, the new model generates 50% more horsepower and almost four times as much electrical power.

The Army identified the Paladin Integrated Management program is one of its top 12 critical programs in the Fiscal Year 2016 budget.

PLA could be developing two versions of Type 055 destroyer

user posted image

China could be developing two types of the Type 055 guided-missile destroyer — an anti-submarine and an air-defense model — according to the Kanwa Defense Review, a Chinese-language military magazine based in Canada.

The April edition of the magazine made the suggestion after analyzing the latest leaked satellite images of a ground model of the Type 055, which experts believe may have been designed as the successor to the PLA Navy's highly successful Type 52D destroyer.

Based on the satellite images, the Type 055 is 19.34 meters wide, though the ship's length-side, which has only built its main gun, is yet to be finished. The distance between the main gun and the upper level structures, where vertical missile launchers will be installed, is estimated to be 16.93 m, which is particularly wide given that the typical length is around 10 m. The total length of the ship from the main gun to stern is 130 meters, while its displacement appears to be greater than 10,000 tons.

The model appears to have no helicopter pad, meaning that this version of the destroyer may only require small helicopter drones when attacking with guided missiles. Kanwa suggests that this means the Type 055 could be developed into two models, an anti-submarine version and an air-defense version.

By comparison, the total length and width of the four Type 052D destroyers currently in construction are 154 m and 16.33 m, respectively. On the other hand, the US Navy's Zumwalt-class destroyers (DDG-1000) are 182.9 m long and 24.6 m wide. The Type 055 appears to have adopted some of the DDG-1000's stealth concepts, such as using an integrated composite beam to increase the ship's inward tilt angle.

The PLA seems to be building a Chinese-version of the DDG-1000, the report said, noting that focusing on the ability to attack targets both on sea and on land would represent a major change in the PLA Navy's development strategy. The Type 055 will be able to achieve these objectives as it can fire either the YJ18 anti-ship missile or the CJ-10 land attack cruise missile from its vertical launchers.

At last year's Zhuhai Airshow in Guangdong, it was revealed that Chinese companies are developing 155-millimeter Type WS-35R/B guided missiles with a maximum range of 60 kilometers, who appear to have similar capabilities to the latest generation of US destroyer technology.

Each DDG-1000 has a total of only 80 vertical launch cells, which is believed to be sufficient given the US Navy's abundance of guided missile cruisers and destroyers. The original design was said to have included 128 cells. However, as China currently only has 10 Type 052C/D destroyers, this means that the Type 055 could have around 90-96 cells, similar to that of the US Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.

Huanqiu, the Chinese-language website of the nationalistic Global Times tabloid, suggests that, based on the modelling process of the Type 052C/D destroyers, construction of the the Type 055 could take another one or two years to commence.

DARPA Hacked Together A Super Cheap Google Glass-Like Display

The new helmet-mounted display system is designed for infantry soldiers, not fighter pilots. However, the objective to optimise attention remains the same. If you’re leading a patrol into enemy territory, there are a million things to worry about. You’re the one tasked with finding the safest, most efficient path to your destination. You’re the soldier who needs to identify any insurgents who may happen to cross your path. You’re the first line of defence if you walk into a fire fight.

First Admiral Grigorovich Class Frigate to Join Russian Navy in August

user posted image

MOSCOW, April 8 (Sputnik) — The first in a series of six Admiral Grigorovich class (Project 11356) frigates, being built for the Black Sea Fleet, will be delivered to the Russian Navy in August, the United Shipbuilding Corporation said Wednesday.

"The delivery of the Admiral Grigorovich frigate is planned for August 2015," the company said in a statement.

According to the document, the frigate has completed mooring trials and will soon begin sea trials.

The Project 11356 frigates, displacing 3,850 tons, are designed for anti-ship and anti-submarine warfare as well as for air defense missions, operating both independently or as part of convoys and naval task forces.

The spokesman for the corporation's Yantar shipyard in Russia's westernmost exclave of Kaliningrad, where the 200-capacity frigate was laid down in late 2010, said preparations were being made for scheduled sea trials in mid-April.

The Black Sea Fleet, under the Southern Military District's organizational structure, is stationed in both Crimea and the neighboring Krasnodar Region and operates in the Black and Mediterranean seas.

Beijing offers sweetener for Thailand to buy Chinese subs

user posted image

China will offer a 10-year loan to Thailand if the latter chooses to acquire Chinese-made submarines over that of its competitors, reports Huanqiu, the Chinese-language website of the nationalistic Global Times tabloid.

According to an announcement from the Thai defense ministry, the Royal Thai Navy intends to acquire three new submarines for around US$1 billion, though budgetary constraints mean the purchases could be made individually or stretched out over a period of time. A supply consultation report is expected to be issued by the end of the year, with more details of the plan to be released before November.

Thailand's defense minister, Prawit Wongsuwan, is expected to discuss the deal-sweetening loan with his Chinese counterpart Chang Wanquan during his visit to Beijing between Wednesday and Friday this week. The Thai general, who also serves as the country's deputy prime minister, will be accompanied by a team of military officers including Kraison Chansuwanit, commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Navy.

Thailand is currently considering several alternatives in addition to China's Yuan-class Type 041 diesel-electric submarine, including Russia's Kilo-class diesel-electric submarine, Germany's export-only Type 209 attack submarine, and South Korea's HDS-500RTN, a custom-made sub based on the KSS-500A mini-sub.

Beijing Details Plans for Artificial Islands in South China Sea

user posted image

QUOTE
"We are building shelters, aids for navigations, search and rescue as well as marine meteorological forecasting services, fishery services and other administrative services so as to provide the necessary services to China, neighboring countries and individual vessels sailing the South China Sea," she said.

The announcement came shortly after the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington-based think tank, released satellite images of China’s building efforts on the Mischief Reef of the Spratly archipelago. The images, which showed Chinese ships dredging sand onto the reef, fueled the criticism of already alarmed US officials and other claimants.
