So guys, where's the best place to purchase anime DVDs? I don't like watching anime on the PC so d/loading anime is a no-no for me, except for preview purposes. Another reason I buy DVDs is because I want collect the DVD boxsets.

All along, I've been buying my DVDs in Petaling Street's S&M but it's closed for renovation now. The anime shop in the LG floor has another outlet - it's located along the stretch of road opposite S&M.

Do you guys know any place that sells reasonably priced DVDs in KL? I've been to Sg.Wang and they sell at an absurbly high price for the exact same boxset ( from the same distributor ).

Would appreicate any recommendations from you guys. Domo arigato. notworthy.gif

Anime titles (dvd/vcd) that are available locally are rip-offs & bootlegs. Not worth buying if U ask me.

Import.

VERY expensive, but well worth the money (esp. those Japan release "would" come with goodies, provided you pre-ordered OR ordered the premium pack)

Those DVDs on sale in Malaysia are all Taiwan Bootlegs, my frn do buy those, and his suggestion is that ALWAYS check the quality first before buying, some bootlegs are directly ripped off from US releases, so those are safe to buy. But bootlegs that are ripped off from Japan DVD, subbed with Chinese and then RETRANSLATE the chinese sub to enginlish, those best not too buy, bcoz the subs are real terrible.

the 'guide' is pretty much correct. i dont think there are 'originals' in m`sia (as far as i can see)

R1 dvd's are expensive(i can vouch for that)

and if u can understand japs, then i would recomend u to get R2 japs dvd instead of the R1 coz its well worth it(quality and attention to details to the product) also like the 'guide' says.

happy collecting smile.gif

i have the same opinion too, i dont think there are any 'original' anime DVDs in msia, theyre all crappy bootlegs which are ridiculously priced, i have had a few experiences buying these so called 'original' anime DVDs, and their quality are far worse then those that i can download off the web. I am definitely not going to buy any of the 'original' anime dvds in msia ever again.

Do these companies (that produces the anime DVDs in msia) are paying royalties to the studios that made the anime? i usually buy the DVDs because of two points, 1. i want better quality with some freebies, 2. to support the series which i love so much.

It'd be better for me to even buy the R1 DVDs for my money's worth.

Nope, nada, zilch royalties not paid, just like the Taiwanese and Hong Kong bootlegs, heck even the Malay translation of Slam Dunk manga is not sanctioned by Takehiko Inoue

One shop in Time Square 1st floor sell lots of 'bootleg' anime dvds. So far their pricing is the most reasonable one...

I don't mind bootlegged copies. Heck, I just want to watch it. Subs or no subs doesn't really matter. Heck, I even take the Chinese-subbed bootlegged copies.

if u just want to watch them why not just download them? i would rather wait for the download to complete than giving $ to the pirates when i can get them free.

if you like the stuff u watch, support the producer, artist. get their products.

as i mentioned earlier, there is pretty much no ori dvd's in m`sia.

if u are collecting artbooks, the only 1 i know that sells originals is in kinokuniya KLCC they import it from japan. other than that, get it online but its not worth it if u intend to buy artbooks coz its about 20-30% cheaper if u get it from kinokuniya.(in my case its about 1/2 as cheap compared to if i get it in the uk so i buy online at kino's site and mail it to my cuz in m`sia for the moment)

oh hell, then we should not support them at all, at least the american companies pay to the japanese studios to get the license to distribute their hard work. this is bullshit i tell u, damn pirates.

downloading fansubbed animes are 100x better than buying those bootlegged copies, ever.

R1&R2 collector here biggrin.gif

im prob considered a noob here, only started about 1 yr ago.

i get them online (otaku.com,otaku.co.uk,hlj.com) < this is the 3 most frequent i use. but mostly uk based for fast shipping

jap anime is not as 'big' here in the uk as there is not as much population size for such a nitch item here.

but bewarned, it will drain u $ wise very fast and badly. and m`sia customs sux tongue.gif , they charge customs for pretty much all the imports(from what i heard)

depending on what sort of dvd, for a 26 ep anime, it usually will be released in a 7 vol series (so its about 3-4 ep in 1 dvd)

beware of bootlegs on the net as well, the once on ebay mostly bootlegs
most of all, do some research on the stuff u r going to buy.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

hpares, what sort of pakaging did it came with? 1 dvd with all the ep? we need a little more description on it to have an idea, but chances are that its bootlegs.

Well, you could organize bulks or group orders to save on shipping. I'd suggest getting stuff from Amazon (UK) pickings are a bit slim, but at least you know it's coming from registered companies

you could do that.btw but how much does the customs charge for tax?

btw, amazon UK is a R2 disk but its a PAL disk, not the NTSC disks like if u get it from the japs.

well, there are quite a number of sites that sells originals. that includes the 1 i've already listed. the 3 i use i trust them completely and i get my stuff within 3 days being in stock(otaku UK). so maybe some other ppl would like to share some other site that has been tested and reliable?

icon_idea.gif I just bought several anime DVDs from the shop that I mentioned in my first post. It's Onegai Sensei, Fruits Basket, School Rumble, Jigoku Shoujo and Rozen Maiden and live action GTO.

Here's the verdict after watching it :

Onegai Sensei, GTO (live version) and Fruits Basket :
Honto ni sugoi quality and excellent subtitles. Like some of you guys have mentioned, it's most probably the US bootleg version. It has english and chinese subtitles and Japanese/English language. The prices average at around RM30 per box set minus 5% discount for members.

School Rumble and Rozen Maiden:
Pretty decent subtitles (minor mistakes) and so-so screen quality.

Jigoku Shoujo :
vmad.gif Dang bad subtitles, names are chinese-ed and all over the place. However quality of the graphics is pretty good. Pretty cool package.

Well, I bought all of my anime DVDs from that shop in Petaling Street and I've had my hits and misses. So far, the hits are more than the misses though. Here's how (at least, what I think) to see if the bootleg anime DVD that we buy are good quality or not.

So far, all of the animes that I bought that have really good subs and quality are the ones with english description at the back of the boxset. ( Not the cheap dvd that costs RM12-16 one ). The ones that have bad subtitles are the boxsets that have japanese description at the back. I'm not saying that this is the fool-proof way to avoid bad subbed DVDs but at least it's safer.

As for downloading anime... The streamyx in my place is very irregular and I don't really like to watch anime on the PC. XD My fault but I really prefer to watch it via VCD or DVD.

So far, the worst subbed anime that I've bought is Fullmetal Alchemist and Jigoku Shoujo. I'm seriously thinking of buying the original FMA DVD that costs RM175... the one I bought with bad subtitles costs RM55. (><) ARGH...

PS : I forgot to add that the Wolf's Rain OVA that I bought at AnimeTech in Sunway Pyramid is bootlegged anime. It costs me RM45 for a 4 episode OVA so... yeah. Kiba's name turned to Lang Nya <-- Wolf's Teeth/Fang.

Bootlegs are supposed to be bashed, then crushed with a steamroller.

If you want to buy the PnSwG series madmoz, you have to either buy it from Amazon JP or wait for the cheaper Funimation version scheduled to be released sometime this year.
