for kitchen lighting, suggesting simple spot light or surface mount lighting as the oil/dirt may clog there over the time. since ceiling fan is near by, cannot use hang-by-wire light, hang by metal rod should be fine.

another aspect to consider is the brightness of ceiling light, because only limited lighting points available.

one advantage of having spot light alike ceiling light is adjustable direction (with some drop down from ceiling) to minimize the shadow from ceiling fan. surface mount light position is higher than ceiling fan, hence projecting light on ceiling fan and resulting shadow and flickering light.

the kitchen light seems pretty dim... usually what is the recommended power or lumen...?
