need some recommendation for ssd, I am eyeing on 256gb one
saw a lot people recommend lite on s900 256gb, but my friend told me go for samsung evo, is much better
but the price difference around RM 100+

does both of them performance different a lot ?
I plan to use my ssd just to install windows (off course), and frequent used software (browser, download manager, spotify, steam, etc ...)

for the above softwares, no difference at all

you only see the gains of high end SSD only on work related matters where every MB/s and IOPS count

otherwise, even the cheapest SSD is miles faster than a HDD
*
Hmm, does the liteon good ? As I can't find any review of it lol
But the Samsung evo really good, newer technology, sounds interesting drool.gif

not sure, some say Liteon and Plextor have the same SSD. but i dont have any sources for that

3D NAND is a better tech, but youre paying more for it. its up to you
*
No idea still can't decide whether go for liteon for best bang budget or go for better performance lol
But I don't get the 3d nand, is for what ?
Faster ? Stable ? Battery saving ? rclxub.gif

As i mentioned previously, even the low perf SSD is faster than a HDD. So if youre jumping from HDD to SSD, the benefit will def be gained irregardless of which SSD.

Benefit of 3D NAND mostly is lifespan and endurance afaik, Samsung dont throw 10 years warranty for no reason
*
yea I know, even cheapest ssd totally pawn hdd tongue.gif
normally go for samsung for better performance
and I only go for evo which only got 5 years warranty, no money go for pro laugh.gif

both are good. however for common usage like what you have described, liteon ssd is already good enough.

between liteon ssd and 850evo, the only attraction for me to choose evo is the longer warranty.

go for liteon. get larger capacity if possible. performance wise, i don't think you can feel the differences.

3d nand is the new flash technology that has smaller foot print (hence you can have very large capacities, like 3.84tb, in a small 2.5" form factor), and is more durable (according to reviews).
these days, there are mainly 3 types of consumer sata ssds: value, mainstream, and performance. pick mainstream for common use if possible. to me, liteon s900 and samsung 850evo are mainstream drives.
*
wow you quote me a lot, let reply one by one

1. yea as another forumer said, based on my usage liteon ssd can fulfill, I just thinking samsung may last longer since got newer technology

2. for the warranty I doesn't care, off course longer is better

3. either I get liteon or samsung evo I want go for 250 / 256gb, for performance mostly just want faster read instead write, since just install few software laugh.gif
as for that 3d nand, thanks for your explanation, as for durable really depends how I use hmm.gif
I think I will go for samsung evo for future proof icon_rolleyes.gif
although liteon is good, but so far I only found 1 review, and samsung a lot a lot website review said is very good

thanks in advance biggrin.gif

try samsung evo 850 250gb RM 449 at viewnet

QUOTE(aaronpang @ Jan 18 2016, 02:13 PM)
Planning to get a M.2 SSD to get for my Dell XPS 8900. Sharing list for everyone's benefit... Collected the information from LYN price list section.
[attachmentid=5841416]

Narrowed choices within budget to either:-
Crucial MX200 512 M.2 SATA    RM789
PLEXTOR M6E 256 M.2 PCI-E  RM859

Both drives are M.2 and similarly priced with two trade-off of being SPEED for CAPACITY and vice versa.

I'm more inclined to choose Crucial for Capacity, does anyone have experience with these drives and how reliable are Crucial SSD's ?

Would have preferred SAMSUNG 850EVO 512GB M.2 but none are listed in the price-lists and I don't want to purchase outside of proper retail channels.

Thanks for the advice  thumbup.gif

what's the capacity of your 850evo?

below is the benchmarks for 840 evo (500gb each, sata and msata version), showing the difference between rapid mode (top, sata) and normal (bottom, msata) speeds.

Not compulsory. To me it's just for activation of rapid mode. I disable it from startup after that's done. System tweaks and op are usually manual, unless i'm lazy hehe
*
rapid mode ? is it looks like fast startup that build in on Windows 10 ?
by default it is enabled hmm.gif

it's a ram cache, taking care of things AFTER the os is fully loaded.

don't be bothered by benchmark i showed earlier. i just wanted to show that rapid mode is working, and there are significant difference when you bench.

in reality, note that samsung's rapid mode, like many ram-caching features provided by others (eg. plextor's plexturbo, crucial's momentum), might slow things down in some scenarios. the best way to find out whether you can benefit from it is to test it out with your usage. compared to earlier versions of rapid mode, newer ones have some improvements. however, if you cannot feel any performance boost at all, just turn it off.

Edit: forgot to answer the question lol it's more like superfetch. The benchmark feature that samsung magician provides is testing queue depth of 32, meaning server loads. For common usage, we refer to queue depth of 4. Excellent results for qd32 doesn't reflect the same at qd4.
*
thanks for the explanation, feel so confusing laugh.gif
anyway I will install it and see how it performs biggrin.gif

Oh nvm most users don't need to understand these queue depth la or whatever technical because they are just looking at outcomes haha

That's why i said for rapid mode, just enable it and test your usage for a week or two, then test again with it disabled. If you don't feel anything different, you don't need it. Disabling it will free up occupied ram space for system use, and also reduce writes to ssd due to cache flushing to disk for next reuse everytime you shut down the computer.
*
Ohh back home I test it
But after disable it then can uninstall right ?

well, the price of msata ssds might be slightly higher than sata ssds, and you need to get an additional adapter. the cost should higher than getting a sata ssd.

performance wise they should be the same. however it's better to check out their specs first.

sata > msata > m.2 > pci-e laugh.gif

yeah it is. it has the largest capacity also. (but damn expensive lol!) for personal computing, sata ssd is actually a sensible option to have for now.

the best minimal combo for a main rig is still 1x ssd for os and 1x hdd for storage. move all other hard disks to a separate system. this way your main rig will run much faster because it has less hardware connecting to it.
*
ya is very expensive, normal consumer like us better spend on sata, msata or m.2 laugh.gif
and yes, best combo is get 1 ssd to install os and frequently used software, other things on hdd tongue.gif

m.2 can get over-heating. while pci-e just like gpu need fan as well. currently sata still the most reliable.

no idea lol as I am using m.2 on laptop, not desktop tongue.gif

how's the temp? once it heat up, then start throttled.

normal usage like browsing, watch movie degree around 40°C

QUOTE(horns @ Jan 26 2016, 10:52 AM)
for common usage, i think the heat issue might be acceptable. some laptops do provide additional heat spreading feature for m.2 ssds through smart designs.
*
my laptop got 3 heat sink pipe (unsure what it call) laugh.gif

ok hehe it's called heat pipe. however i think the cooling system is mainly used to cool cpu and gpu only. i'm not sure if there is any direct contact to your ssd. afaik certain high-end asus g-series has a special metal place holder for m.2 ssd which also serves as heat spreader for the ssd.
*
no idea lol
yet I forgot where the ssd location on the laptop already
anyway, for me it is not a big deal since normal usage just 40°C biggrin.gif

different users have different requirements hehe ssds in my main rig are all filled with os, vm, dev tools and libs, apps, and games.
*
ya, different people got different usage
as I found 120 / 128gb may enough, but somehow worry not enough since technology keep growing nowadays laugh.gif
better grab a 250 / 256gb tongue.gif

as a student, my ssd just install frequently used software like microsoft office, chrome, firefox
other installed on hdd tongue.gif
that why still got so many space laugh.gif

it's always better to have some buffers. however just don't go too far. it's really a waste of money. better save some so that you can grab new ones (with new techs) when they're available.
i think transcend ssd370s is ok for you. it's MYR 350 at c-zone.
*
Ya I do get you what you trying to talk, as you said technology keep growing
So by the time flies, those files also will getting bigger and bigger
Yet, once I graduate I will install those stuff related to my job mah tongue.gif
Now still early, just use the ssd around 3 months only laugh.gif
