Hi,

Recently my intel 330 died/corrupted after theres an error during windows update. At first it was like it cannot read the drive and later refuse to function at all. Is there any fix to rectify this?

So if it really died, I am thinking of getting another ssd for o/s (win8 and soon 10). My question is 120gb still enough or have to get 240gb? Then which brand is better? Currently using asus z77 vlk so will it have any compatibility issues?
Thanks in advance

P/s: Currently eyeing samsung 650 for 120gb since it is affordable. As for 240gb, not sure. Something reliable for less than rm400 would be great.

120GB should be enough for the OS & a couple of programs. My laptop only use 60GB including MS office I think but my laptop died already. However, including games, you'll need secondary HDD or go for at least 240GB SSD.
*
Thanks for the input. Previously I'm using SSD strictly for OS while I used HDD for other programs such as MS Office etc. so perhaps 120gb is pretty much enough for me. smile.gif

So if I buy an SSD do I have to format it or just install OS right away? Sorry for the silly question, my friend used to do all the installation when I got my first SSD. I heard u need to do disk cleanup every once in a while to delete the old backup files, is it true?

The sweet spot (best performance/price values) for ssd is still at 240gb range (240-256gb) If possible go for that range.

You can install the os right away. Reformatting is usually done to get rid of old files before a new one is installed. For disk cleanup, usually os will take care of it also. If you are out of space, then you can do it manually.

ok, after some digging I came up with these;

Pendrive rapid-X
transcend 370
OCZ vertex 150
Kingston hyperX fury
Lite on S900
Adata SP900

so yeah, which one should I consider? Many of those I'm not familiar with. are they reliable?

we have good feedback about liteon s900 and transcend ssd370. the rest should be ok also. mainstream ssds are relatively cheaper and great for general use.

Since many recommend Liteon S900 I just might get one. I saw in garage sale people selling OEM liteon? is it the same S900? Where to find the cheapest price for it? I am planning to purchase it January next year.

liteon ssd

this one sells really cheap, really tempting.

The link that the seller put is invalid... Cant check whether is the same OEM S900 model or not...
*
Too bad. Have to look somewhere else for that SSD or buy other brand.

digging at lelong saw this one. Not S900 though
liteon l9s

uh? if it's not l9s, it's not s900 oem version. that means they are not the same.

from a brief search, i think this is similar to zeta series, using Silicon Motion SM2246EN controller.
*
So is it not as good as L9s and S900? hmm.gif

Yes, technically. To name one, the seq. write speed of s900 should be a bit higher than 400MB/s while zeta series is about 300MB/s. However, for common usage it should be fine. You should not feel the difference.
*
The seller sells those at RM300 and 1 year warranty. Well there still time before Xmas so I can still look around. laugh.gif

tried to find this liteon cv1-cc256-11 on the net but the one that always pop up are this liteon cv1-cc256-01. the difference is between eleven and one.
judging from the spec of the latter, the seq write comes close to what you estimates at around 335 MB/s. I guess it is not bad at all
might be better than kingston v300 and definitely better than my old intel 330. laugh.gif

Still haven't bought that cv1-cc256-11, thinking about its 1 year only warranty.
Browsing through techview at lelong
Saw them selling Liteon MUII (RM399) and 900S (RM409) with full 3 year warranty
what is the difference between both of those?

the main difference is the controller, maybe the nand flash chips too. the controller in mu ii should be phison controller. 900s use marvel controller. 900s is positioned as mainstream, while mu ii is entry-level.

for MYR10 difference, i think it's a no-brainer.
*
So 900s it is then. Cant wait for the funds to be available. Want to have a taste of that delicious speed. laugh.gif

yes. at least to me, i call it best bang for bucks for many reasons.

however, i do hope all users to do their own research too. like any other review sites, don't just take our words for it. this is because we all have different needs, budgets, and expectations. to me, most mainstream sata ssds are good for common usage, for work, i prefer performance ssds. some others might think otherwise.
*
I have read whatever reviews available for the 900s and other SSD and decided to get the 900s due to mostly positive feedback I read in the internet. Plus the pricing is still affordable. smile.gif

i guaran-dam-tee you wont look at HDD ever again if you see windows booting less than 20 seconds laugh.gif

Yup, after parting with SSD for a while, (I used to have an intel 330 until it died on me). Then settled for a HDD for booting but now cannot stand the slowness. I just can't wait to get another SSD. laugh.gif

Is Crucial still a good brand for SSD? I'm thinking to get M550 120gb.

I think it is a good brand and that is a good ssd but like others said, go for 240/256gb, much better.

Thanks.

However I'm stuck with SATA2 interface, don't think going for 256gb ssd would make much difference and my budget 200-300 only.
*
Maybe you could try finding a samsung 650 basic 120gb. It is a whole lot cheaper and perhaps maybe better?

If like that then go for crucial. reliability wise it should be good. a friend of mine used crucial ssd for quite some time now and it still doing fine.

Just bought the Liteon 900s for RM390. Such a good deal. Unfortunately don't have enough time to install windows in it.

Hi guys, I just finally install windows with my liteon SSD. I just wanted to confirm something. Is it normal for an SSD to have less storage than advertised?

I'm asking because when the first attempt failed, the SSD split into 2 partitions (disk 0 and disk 1). Second attempt after converting disk 0 to GPT I now left with about 238.35 GB. When I open disk management in control panel it only shows disk 0. Should I convert disk 1 to GPT as well or just leave it as is? Thanks in advance.

if it's a 256gb ssd, yes the space for users is 238gb (roughly). some space is reserved by os for its own use.

can you show us how your disk is partitioned? (you can print screenshots of disk management) to get rid everything and start over, it's best to do 'diskpart > clean' steps.
*
Hi, here is the screenshot of the SSD.

QUOTE(distributor @ May 9 2016, 01:34 PM)
this is same as HDD,

256gb = 256,000,000,000 bytes
so just divide by 1024*1024*1024 , you will get roughly 238++ GB

Newer OS use GPT (win7sp1,win8,win10) if your bios support UEFI.
Generally GPT allows u to create 128 partitions.
Each partitions can be more than 2TB space.

So, no need to convert from MBR to GPT
*
I had to convert to GPT because if I don't it won't let me to continue to install OS in there. Currently using win 8 pro and planning to upgrade to win 10 plus the bios is UEFI supported.

Your user partition is c: (single partition only) the first 2 are system partitions created by os.

Since your system bios is set to uefi, you need gpt disk.
*
I see. So actually there's nothing wrong with the SSD after all doh.gif
It was my first time encountering that GPT conversion. Had to search at youtube on how to do it.
Anyway thanks for the explanation. thumbsup.gif

yeah there is nothing wrong smile.gif

with ransomware also targetting mbr disks, use gpt disk if possible, eg. petya can encrypt the contents in mbr disks, it can only make gpt disk unbootable, while unable to encrypt contents.

I see, just read about this ransomware. Thanks for the heads up. smile.gif

FYI, you should be able to choose between legacy & UEFI boot when booting with the windows installer disc. When you bring up the boot drives menu (with some motherboard the shortcut is F8), the UEFI-capable boot drives will show something like "(UEFI)" at the beginning of the drive name. Your computer by default boot the disc in UEFI mode which is the reason the installer asked you to convert the disk to gpt.
I see, thanks for the info thumbsup.gif
