yeah i'm using some, housed inside common usb-based hdd enclosures that can be found in the market. it's not running at full speed of course but i can live with that. (around 190MB/s only)

in near future we will have better stuff like usb 3.1. the speed should be much better. i hope hehe
*
190Mb/s is still better tongue.gif
anyway, How about the cabling? Can use cable that is provided with the hdd enclosures?
How about power source? They use from usb also eh?(cause i read ssd need external power source or maybe this is a tottally different thing?)

Thanks!

i just use the common hdd enclosure, with the bundled cable that comes with it. there is no need for power source.

maybe there are better enclosures for ssd i don't know lol

currently iam using Intel 520 120g ssd, want to upgrade to a bigger capacity, like 500gb. So what is your opinion between Samsung 850 evo & 850 pro ? Speed wise, evo almost par with pro but pro is much more expensive! How about the reliability issue? Since evo is using TLC which infamous for its speed drops bug.

between the two, i suggest you go for 850 pro. with that kind of money it's best to go for at least mlc nand chip. based on reviews/user comments on the internet, correction about the samsung evo speed drop thing: it only happens to 840 evo.

generally speaking, they're reliable. however for new drives, it's hard to tell the actual reliability part of the drive, because there are no prior records supporting this.

a word of caution: DO NOT USE SAMSUNG MAGICIAN TO UPDATE SSD FIRMWARE! or rather, if there is a firmware iso files for you to create bootable dvd/usb, use that instead.

about that recent incident of 850 pro 'death' (actually it's reversible with a firmware that is available in the wild), it was caused by the convenience of samsung magician's firmware auto update feature. if you used the conventional way (bootable usb/dvd) to do the update, everything is fine. for now that new firmware was taken down after the incident.

with all that cleared, now what's your usage? if it's for common usage or gaming only, i think you should go for mainstream drives instead. normally you don't feel significant differences between mainstream and performance sata ssds. (the differences are there, but you might need more than common usage to feel it)

nice right? biggrin.gif i wish we have such ports built-in and compatible hdd bays (look at that size of the 2.5" version) in our laptops lol!

if you have a desktop computer, imo it's good to have that biggrin.gif

the better system is x99. for z97 you need to be a bit picky on mobo. i will switch mobo later to use this and keep my sli lol

Yup, I always find X99 is much superior to Z97 (especially when high end Z97 cost as much as entry X99).

Even the crippled 5820k also have 28 PCIE 3.0 lanes, easily 12 more than the best Z97 can offer, LOL...

yeah smile.gif x99 is actually better because of more pcie lanes. for z97 it's kind of painful because you need to check out their pcie lane distribution.

Is there any reason for me to choose a Samsung 840 EVO/Pro SSD rather than a Lite-on S900 which is priced 1/2 than the former? After googling for abit, I noticed that people listed the Samsung SSD as one of the best performing SSD out there while I can't really find much review on the S900. I'm thinking of buying a 256gb SSD and while price isn't really an issue, I'll probably go for the S900 if they perform pretty much the same as the Samsung. Any help would be appreciated, thanks. smile.gif

yes, there are some reasons that you need to consider. samsung 840 evo is still suffering from slow read bugs for old data, and samsung 840 pro is expensive (if you can still find one. the latest model is 850 pro, which is also expensive)

if your usage is more about common usage and gaming, most likely mainstream drives like s900 is sufficient for you. the differences between mainstream and performance drives are actually very vague in these types of usage. (meaning you feel no obvious differences)

I see. So what are the circumstances that will make the Samsung perform better than the Lite-on?

Like synthetic benchmarks. You won't feel the difference on real world.

when you do more than common usage. for instance, using it for storage purposes. with 20% overprovisioning (op, based on my usage as storage. i delete and store gigabytes of accumulative data backups every week), samsung 840 pro can have pretty stable r/w speeds (around 450MB/s).

like i said, the differences might not be very obvious.

edit: TristanX is right, another one is synthetic benchmarks. normal human usually cannot do that lol!
