Bought Samsung gear s2...can't display whatsapp text with image on my watch. Wonder android watches also the same...can only display whatsapp text messages but not image.
Can any android watch owner let me know? Tq

It only shows if you have 1 unread message, which has to be the picture. Any more pictures, different chats or following text messages will make the picture disappear, leaving only the message "image". It's not just the background, when you swipe left, instead of getting to the chatlog instantly you will first see a cropped fullscreen version of the pic. swipe left again for the chatlog. The image is only shown if you have "automatic downloading of media" (or what's it called) enabled in whatsapp. It usually also takes a while to be sent to the watch as well.
It's not just whatsapp by the way, as far as I can tell every notification which you could expand on your phone to see the included picture shows up on the watch.

Just tried huawei watch and moto 360...both can't display whatsapp images. So i think there's no smart watch in the market now that able to do that.
