Drone flown near KLIA causes stir

Purported aerial drone photographs of aircrafts landing at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) caused a stir on Facebook, with netizens fearing that it could lead to another aviation disaster.

The images were apparently uploaded to the social media site Instagram at least three months ago by a user under the pseudonym ‘yengnasir’ who apparently defended his actions when asked if this was dangerous.

“It’s far away. The distance was calculated before flight using GPS mode,” he wrote.

The Instagram account has since been closed, but not before screenshots from the account were circulated on Facebook.

One screenshot supposedly shows yengnasir posing with the packaging for a DJI Phantom 2 quadcopter drone -- a remotely flown aircraft weighing little over a kilogramme, has four rotors pointing upwards, and a camera mounted underneath.

Malaysian regulations exempt drones under 20 kilograms from stringent requirements, but it is illegal to fly it within 1.5 nautical miles (2.8 kilometres) of an airport’s boundaries without approval from air traffic controllers, including for aerial photography.

this guy has no brain. im a drone owner. i have no intention to capture anything at airport...its a restricted area...there are so many other places that we can capture video such as Sepang F1....KLCC....but no airport. cmon this is logic thinking la...think for others la....even if i attempt to fly high altitude i make sure there is no airplane flying in that area. i use flightradar24 apps to help me this...

If they want to fly at taman tasik near their house nobody give a damn.

But if you fly at an airport where planes are constantly landing, of course people are not going to like it, we had enough Malaysian related air disasters last year.

Unless his camera has a super duper huge zoom lens (which I doubt), the photos look like they were taken rather near the planes.
"It's far away" is a very subjective statement. I hope the authorities take him to task!

The FAA has partnered with several industry associations to promote Know Before You Fly, a campaign to educate the public about using unmanned aircraft safely and responsibly. Individuals flying for hobby or recreation are strongly encouraged to follow safety guidelines, which include:
Fly below 400 feet and remain clear of surrounding obstacles
Keep the aircraft within visual line of sight at all times
Remain well clear of and do not interfere with manned aircraft operations
Don't fly within 5 miles of an airport unless you contact the airport and control tower before flying
Don't fly near people or stadiums
Don't fly an aircraft that weighs more than 55 lbs
Don't be careless or reckless with your unmanned aircraft – you could be fined for endangering people or other aircraft

Yup, those drones are just as big as a large bird only.... If the radar is tuned to detect such small objects, our radar system will give out way too much alarms that ppl who monitor radars wont be able to cope.

laws n regulation are there for a reason. all it takes is for the drone to malfunction, fly into the path of the landing airplane, get sucked into the engine and cause damage.

or, we can ditch the laws and regulation, pray to jesus and hope for the best.

Keep Calm and relax, you paranoid malaysians.

Small birds will usually pass through large jet engine (being diced, chopped, cooked and burned) without the engine really noticing; it may be stalled by a large amount of small birds, of a few large birds, especially water fowl which are known to swallow stones to reduce their buoyancy (so as to be able to dive to hunt fish) or to grind seeds in their giblet.

In the case where an engine stall, or is even destroyed by the bird ingestion, the design of the engine and nacelle is such that the engine will not blow up and send debris everywhere that will cause other airplane systems to fail (i.e. the engine debris are contained). This allows the aircraft to remain operational, save for the failed engine.

All commercial jet airliners have at least two engines, and are able to fly and even take off (albeit with a longer runway requirement) with one engine inoperative, hence a single engine failure is not the cause of an airplane no longer being able to fly.

In the rare case where all engines are inoperative, airplane do not crash. A plane is a glider first and foremost, the engines are there to keep the speed without loss of altitude and to maintain altitude without loss of speed (and to climb and accelerate as well). A commercial airliner will typically be able to glide for a distance that is around 15 times its initial altitude.

Birds do generally tend to keep at low altitude (as opposed to the 35000 ft cruise altitude of commercial airliners) and airliners will fly at around 250 knots at altitudes where birds usually fly (i.e. in the takeoff and landing phases).

Birds also have typically a very wide field of view, and fearing predators, will try to avoid very large fast objects approaching. This does not always work, however, but some effort is done by airport authorities to clear the immediate area around an airport from large concentrations of large birds, and to track and monitor the presence of birds. Pilots are also supposed to use the Mark 1 eyeball to avoid hitting birds if they can help it.

And finally, most crashes are not fatal. Fact is, the majority of people on board an aircraft going through an accident will walk away from it unharmed.
So, that is why there are few fatal crashes following bird impact, because your "if" propositions are not representatives.

Recent Taiwan airline crash. One engine lost power. kaboom crashed.

Why u guys so paranoid about Air crashes?

Remember I did a thread about it a year ago and sooooooooooooooo many k/tard all told me the same thing.

Still safe to travel by Flight. I will still support MAS!!!!!!!! and all that.

I see here 1 little drone causes all hell break loose.

Sigh, Malaysians. The irony is too damn high.

The irony is too damn high.

it is not that simple, we see it as no treat because only one drone.imagine if there is no law forbid ppl to fly it around airport. There will be many many drone + heli + plane trying to fly around airport to take picture. A car driving 90kmh hit a drone already cause big damage, let alone a plane flying at more then 600kmh. sure it will damage the place body/ wind screen/sensor/light ect ect. it will nto bring the plane down. but will cost unnecessary repair fee. and repair lead to delay. doh.gif
Yes a plane can fly with 1 engine, but what if the plane's engine damage from flight and require emergency landing, but on the way down it hit a drone/plane/heli. then it will loss both engine cry.gif

other then that...there will be situation where drone/plane/heli lost control and drop on the run way. ..imagine few of this drop on the run way...it will be another concord case. cry.gif

last but not least, there is possibility of the remote frequency to effect the control tower.( not sure, this is one of the reason they banned) tongue.gif

Drop in the runway, at most will be crushed by the weight of the plane, so it's still safe.

10 drones attack. 4 try to masuk engine. 2 try to hit tail, 2 to hit cockpit. 2 randomly hit anywhere. All strapped with C4.

See how to avoid.

this guy has no brain. im a drone owner. i have no intention to capture anything at airport...its a restricted area...there are so many other places that we can capture video  such as Sepang F1....KLCC....but no airport. cmon this is logic thinking la...think for others la....even if i attempt to fly high altitude i make sure there is no airplane flying in that area. i use flightradar24 apps to help me this...

How high is limited by the distance between the remote and receiver (drone).
some modified (or should i say, custom build) ones, can fly even higher than KLCC & KL tower, in fact some can not only fly high, then can also go up to 8km away from the pilot. hence the need to install FPV systems if pilots intends to fly high and far.

it is fun really. it feels like you are really flying, except that you dont feel the G when you do maneuvers.

depends on the battery pack la.... those that came together with most mass-production drones usually between 5-15minutes flight time. short distance only.

if you want those that can fly far and long, like half hour flight time, u add gps system, gymbal motor, FPV cams and upgraded transceiver, u will need more power, and hence u would need bigger batteries. bigger batteries means more weight. more weight means u need bigger more powerful rotors to carry its load. more powerful rotors lagi consume more power, hence u need even bigger battery capacity to support and so on and so on rinse and repeat.

strike a balance lor.

QUOTE(unknown warrior @ Mar 3 2015, 01:32 PM)

So, that is why there are few fatal crashes following bird impact, because your "if" propositions are not representatives.

depends on the C rate and mAh....

C rate = the horse power of the motor
mAh = is like minyak....

Drones normally caries 5000mAh~7000mAh or some 10,000mAh battries

it would be like 15min ~ 30min.

DJI can sometimes fly until 45min depends on batteries mAh and throttle management

but the higher mAh it goes the more expensive the battery are...

You're full of shit. If the plane doesn't have enough altitude like what is obviously shown.. it will not be able to safely glide down.

For a drone to take that picture the plane must be quite low altitude, on a take off path mostly.

kalau orang tanya aku, mampu tak aku bunuh manusia bongok macam kau, dan apa cara aku.
aku jawab boleh, senang je amik buluh runcing kasi rejam jubor kau bertubi2 sampai mampus. tapi ada aku buat tak?

orang tanya aku berapa tinggi boleh terbang, aku jawab je.
ada aku buat tak main drone kat KLCC park? ada aku terbang naik KL tower? kau ada bukti?

konon2 nak jadi moral righteous nak label org hipokrit padahal diri sendiri bangang abadi bodoh sombong. kalau nak tembak, pastikan bidik tepat2, isi peluru betul2 baru tembak, jangan main tembak semberono je. ludah ke langit tu woi.

mamat yengnasir tu terang2 buat salah tak boleh kondem? mat rempit lesing atas jalanraya pun orang marah suh pi trek, ni nak main drone nak fly kena la buat tempat yang sesuai. terang2 area airport off-limits, common knowledge dan logic. mungkin kau takde.

this guy has no brain. im a drone owner. i have no intention to capture anything at airport...its a restricted area...there are so many other places that we can capture video  such as Sepang F1....KLCC....but no airport. cmon this is logic thinking la...think for others la....even if i attempt to fly high altitude i make sure there is no airplane flying in that area. i use flightradar24 apps to help me this...

GG to all /k dronerz.

Just watched berita tv3suku just now.

Government are planning to enforce license to those who operate drones, but those profesionals & commercial ones la.

However for hobbyists, will be given like a class to understand the safey & consequences.

All this due to one stupid Prof Dr Kapten apantahnamadia from UniKL who gave the idea/recommendation.

Government is sure gonna milk this licensing money from /k dronerz.

no need ban la

just license this operator

means that to operate it you need a license (like ham radio, diving apalagi..)

and to have that license you have to sit for educational class and exam to test your competency

Yeah but diam2 sudah lah. I am sure other dronerz are aware the utmost importance of not playing drones at airport locations/military/secret zones.

Ni kesian kat /k dronerz tak pasal2 lepas ni nak main kat padang permainan pun kena lesen.

I bet you this Prof kapten lieutenant sarjan masterchief apantahnamadia will get some commission from the licensing idea.
