Heya,

Just wondering . . . I've never played a P90/P100 loaded axe and am curious as to how noisy it is exactly, when compared to a regular single coil?

Does its higher output cause it to hiss/squeal more? Is it as bad with lights and PA as regular single coils?

Thanks.

P90s are supposed to have the best of both worlds. Twangy (Sort-of) yet not too fat tone and as it's wound in the humbucker way, it cancels out the 60-cycle hum. So I would guess that it only as noisy as a humbucker. smile.gif

P-90 are single coils, they have the 60hz cycle hum.
P-100 is the humbucking version of P-90.

i would personally go for a P-94, you get the P-90 tone in a pickup that fits in a normal humbucker cavity, ie. no need for re-routing.

Thanks for the replies.

Everdying - I'd actually need to get either a P-100 or a hum-cancelling P-90 variant as the original PU are P-90s.

Wouldn't the overwound/higher output (that's what I understand P-90s to be . . . higher output/overwound single coils) cause it to hum more than regular single coils?

Lep Zep - Just listened to some of the soundclips on the Seymour Duncan site and the P-90s still aren't as twangy as . . . how I'd imagine twangy to be. tongue.gif And still distinctly 'fat'.

Nice Black Crowes tone though . . . yum yum.

Yea, getting a LP Studio with P-90s . . . would prefer a '56 Goldtop with P-90s, but hey, you know how it is. drool.gif

then just leave those gibson P90s as it is, they're good enough.
if you wanna upgrade go for the P100.

P90s do hum, no matter make it is.
but P100, some say do not capture the P90 sound, cos it is a stacked humbucker/single coil anyway.
some say it does capture the P90 sound, but its more smoother.
some say its just a humbucker sound with more treble.

whatever it is, its not a P90 tongue.gif

also, P100 is slightly taller, due to the stack, than a P90, so some routing might be required.
best to check the replacement brand you're getting first and compare with the gibson height.

Thanks for the advice.

I'll probably play it as it is for quite a while first anyways. No point changing anything unless I'm really unhappy with it.

I've played some P90s before, it has a rather fat tone, but still has a bit of twangy tone.

gibson's press release when it came out.

New "Patent Applied For" Pickups from Gibson!

Gibson Strings & Accessories, based in Elgin, IL (a division of Gibson Musical Instruments), recently unveiled a dramatic new line of after-market replacement pickups.

The P-94(tm) Series pickups are the first "Patent-Applied-For" pickup that Gibson has introduced in many years. The P-94(tm) is a unique combination of the best of two worlds; a vintage sounding single coil style pickup, made to emulate Gibson's famous P-90 pickups, but housed in a traditional humbucker housing so that it can be mounted into guitars that originally accommodated humbucker pickups, and requires no routing or other damaging modifications to the guitar. They can also be used along with standard humbucking pickups for unique tonal combinations. This offers a new opportunity for guitar players to dramatically alter the personality of their instrument, giving expanded tonality to their guitar, whether it's a solid body, semi-acoustic of full size jazz style guitar.

The P-94(tm) are made using the same enamel coated vintage wire and Alnico V magnets and come in calibrated neck and bridge models for a balanced output. The neck model features a reversed magnet polarity for hum cancellation when used in conjunction with the bridge pickup. The P-94(tm) has higher output and sustaining qualities than traditional single coil pickups, giving a smooth, full-range tonal response with lots of bite when desired, yet capable of subtle nuances for enhanced dynamics, no matter what style of music is played. The P-94(tm) has all of the quality features that players have come to expect from Gibson pickups: genuine nickel silver baseplates, adjustable nickel or 24t. gold pole pieces, full wax potting for feedback elimination and Gibson's Limited Lifetime Warranty, the longest in the industry.

The dramatic looking and sounding P-94's are available in black with either chrome or 24ct. gold plated open-top covers, or in creme with chrome open-top cover for a distinctive look.

Tried an LP jr before with P90. It has this great raw crunch bright sound that just screams rock n' roll, kinda like a very hot bridge single coil pickup on steroids.

The noise levels on the other hand are also on steroids.

GREAT!

I'll be getting the same one. Except it'll be a Ruby.

How do you like it? Opinions?

I've heard a few Gibson '56 Goldtops with P-90s - do they sound about the same?

Thanks!

To be perfectly honest, I love it. I am not a super rocker so I love the single coil P90s for the wonderful clean sound it can offer. I tried playing it on a Laney amp and the sound was wonderful. Right now I just got the GT8 over the weekend and played with the LP Studio Gem for the past few days. The sound is great, really nice!

Yeah I remembered that post as well but I decided to buy mine from my close friend. It was RM3k but I didn't mind it because he brought it to a luthier to refurbish it so it looks brand new, all the gold accessories on it were buffed and polished nicely and the finishing was cleared and repolished. The luthier did a great job restoring it nicely but cost RM500 which he paid for it. So paying RM3k didn't bother me.

AH DARN IT.

Your Topaz looks so nice that I'm having second thoughts about getting the Ruby. The thing is that there is another Topaz there for sale too . . .

Anyways, glad to hear that you love it. Now I just wish that Ishibashi will get those damn pics to me quicker so that I can confirm on the purchase.

Wow. RM500 to clean up the guitar? Which luthier was this?

Oh, how bad is the hum (if you've played single coils before)?

I'm getting mine for about <2.9k with shipping, taxes, etc included.

Although there is a little 1cm dink at the bottom of the body . . . but I guess it should be alright.
