Hi guys, Good day!

Some kind of noob question here.

Im kinda new to photography and i just own a Nikon D7000 which is my 1st DSLR. I'd always like to shoot portraits and indoor objects.

Heres is my question:|

Given that you are going to

-KLCC Comic fiesta event for cosplay shot,

-Inside museum for shooting artifacts.

What kind of lens would you bring if you have a choice? (kit lens, zoom lens, prime lens, etc.)

What kind of stuff that you could possible bring along? (Tripod, etc)

Since most of the time cosplay and museum shots involve photographing one subject only, getting a fast prime lens (35mm/50mm F1.8) would be a great choice thumbup.gif

The 2nd, but more challenging option is to use a flash ~

-KLCC  Comic fiesta event  for cosplay shot
Here are my photos from Comic Fiesta 2014.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/goldfries/set...57647659907534/

My setup - Nikon D750 with Nikkor 24-120 F4 VR (kit lens) and Nikkor 50mm f1.4. For some shots I used my Canon 580EX II flash.

For you, I don't know what lens you have. The kit lens for the Nikon D7000 is the 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR, correct? That's a fine lens to use.

50mm on D7000 would be very limited in field of view but might work, depending on which day and time you go to Comic Fiesta (the crowd).

For better background separation, I recommend going F/4 or wider. Tamron 17-50 f2.8 or other ultra-wide angle f2.8 lens would be helpful.

As for museum, that's one I think you're better off with flash. In darker areas, you can go wide aperture but that would mean losing out on depth of field.

I got myself D7000 along with kit lens 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR, andit also come with Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D

I think that its sufficient for me now. ><!

I still on beginning of the learning curve for the DSLR.

There are someone advice me to use the 50mm lens more often to improve my skill fast Is that true?

Wah, that is one old-school flashgun laugh.gif
Just replace the battery and attach it onto your camera and see whether it goes off when you press the shutter button? hmm.gif
If it works, then pairing it with the 18-105mm will be a great combo~

The reason why many advice people to use more of the 50mm lens is because its a prime lens (cannot zoom), so you have to rely on your legs to really get shots with good composition; so from there you will learn to develop your "photographer's eye" thumbup.gif
But personally, for me I would learn using the kitlens first, so that you know how to take shots, learn about ISO, shutter speed aperture and how they are related to one another. At F3.5-5.6, you don't have to worry too much about Depth of Field: less variables, easier to learn imho laugh.gif

How fast you improve depends on yourself more than your lens. With whatever lens you have, shoot more often and put thought in your photos, you'll progress.

prime lens (no zoom) forces one to think before shooting, so in that sense it does set you right in terms of putting thought into framing the shot.

Actually 50mm on FF camera forces photographer to get close and personal to get the shot, thus improving confidence. Secondly its probably the cheapest prime lens most can afford as their first prime. The rest of reasons are just marketing gimmicks.

Hi,

I think if pair the 50mm with the D7000 sensor, it is a wonderful combo. Only issue is that you will probably have a lot of trouble framing a shot due to the cramp space. If you are planning to get those close-up portrait head-shots, it will probably do pretty well. You might miss a few shots due to ppl getting in the way. If you want a full body shot, you will need quite a bit of room between you and your subject which might be very difficult or impossible for the comic fiesta. In this case, you might be better served with the kit lens paired up with the flash.

There are always 30mm F1.4 or 35mm F1.4/F1.8 to rescue
Better off using kit lens + flash to be honest

50mm 1.8 for begineer. and at the comic fiesta. u usually want to snap what? portrait? some small things? big crowd? depends on your situation. which and which. if u want to go with friends. u might need another lens for group photos.
