hafiz : there's one good shop in puchong.near to the new Carefour.
where do u stay? there's also one in jalan ipoh, but the uncle is very old already, need to know what u need to fix before i recommend further.
also there's another w/shop in USJ1 but that one charges higher price and turnaround quite long, but his work is good.
post some photo of your wife's beetle, then i can tell roughly what it should need hopefully.

jigoku:electric roof? the new model u meant? there's no electric roof unless is japanese version (illegal) or mod from other car (also illegal)

Why not  biggrin.gif
You shoot too? It's always fun to shoot and share together  nod.gif

I read your earlier post in this thread, you mentioned one should read some books before making the purchase, may I know is there anywhere I can download the books?
*
i bought quite a few from book stores...
for online, i use isotorrent to search. google helps too!
depends what do u need to know about the beetle, if i know i may help tongue.gif or if i have i may share (the books or downloads, books u gotta come take lo..)

yeah i shoot too, but hardly since working is very busy...i was more on film camera (classic maa), then got a nikon D70for the sake of using old lens on DSLR, but nikon wasn't capable enough for pairing with old lens, so i sold and now using a Sony A33. smile.gif

The beetle I am looking at has minor body work, knocks on mudguard.
Everything else is running condition, the current owner is the first owner and has been driving it since 69.

Interior needs some work as the seats and upholstry are original fabric.

The car is in good enough condition to be a daily driver without restoring.
But of course restoring will be at the back of my mind.

Stompbox, as what little fire said, do join the VR forum, or u can find them in facebook fan page too! just type volksriders.

anyway, picture sounds better than words.
and, you need to know the purpose of getting a beetle first, let me list just a few :
1. you just simply love the cute look
2. you somewhat thinks that it's a good investment - you buy now and plan to sell later if price is high
3. you're on budget and you've just grad and you wanted a cheap solution
4. you're not really on budget, but u're planning to use the beetle as daily drive
5. you're just simply darn rich

you're welcome to list out your own answer smile.gif

if your answer is :
1. welcome to the club, i think it's cute too biggrin.gif so have you studied the difference in each of the beetle manufactured in different years? for a starter, it's quite difficult and quite confusing to see diff beetle lined up together and here n there there's this diff but u just can't be sure. And over time those owner, especially the 1owner, they tend to use cheap solutions when issues pop up, or they just simply likes the then "trend" and change this and that look...

2. sometime it is! but u gotta know the bits n pieces really well..from the differences in year, to the parts number in the engine bay, to the very rare items u might just got in the car. but the road is not easy and not guarantee.

3. i'm sorry it just doesn't work that way...sad but true, each beetle has its own "personality", they can be very reliable, but they stil have that "emo" period...you still need to bring them out for shoppings, a good sauna and shower, and some meet and greet with other VW friends or other classic car at its age. the cheaper way u put on the car, the emo-er it could get and more frequent it gets the mood...

4. good to know u've decided to invest in beetle! i personally can assure u it can be a good daily drive as long as u take well care of it (like 3. above) and it'll understands and loves u back. i myself have used it as a daily drive before, and my friends still does. but sadly due to my hand itchy i did some big operation to mine and now it's still in the wad.... but rest assured, as long as u treated it well, it don't really fails u much, except for the emo period every now n then u slacked and less pampered it.

5.then...i dono how to say! haha ;p

but anyway, what i wanted to point out is, shoot picture first, everywhere, and ask the owner what is the year the car was made, since u say the owner drove it since 1969, i guess it shold be a 69 model. whic is a ckd model, alot on the road in m'sia, and the price is just not really high. unless it's pretty well done everywhere, else u can walk away if he quotes u 15k. well that's just for me. anyprice more than 15k is pricey for a 69.

what is the engine? if it is a 1.6 then maybe it can compensate the price a bit. but then again, refers to no.1 above. you gotta see the bits n pieces of the engine, some owners really do think some parts in the engine wasn't important and just ditch them. infact, these German engineer did everything for a reason and yes they do make a difference.

if the engine is a 1.6, first look at the grant, is the number tele? if yes then look at the record history if it was upgraded. AFAIK i believe 69 model should equip with 1.3, hence if it wasn't upgraded then do check if the number was suspiciously punched before. If all are intact, then ask if the gearbox is 1.6 or 1.3many owners change engine but not gearbox.

Gearbox, there's pros n cons on pairing 1.6-1.6, or 1.6-1.3.mine is a 1.6-1.3. so b using 1.3gearbox, you wont get that top speed when u cruise, and u'll find out that ur fuel consumption is somewhat higher than 1.6-1.6.
but i personally wank it to 150kmh before, so i guess the top speed is just nice, the up side of this pairing is, you get enough torque and the pick up is just so great, whereas 1.6-1.6...pick up is so so, but cruising is smooth.you won't get the noise too much as compared.

interior...again, need to know exactly the year. i'm not a pro in interior simply bcaz i can't afford to make it original.
but ori seats i might able to help...some owner claim they're using ori seats, but infact they're not. check the rail, if they're anyway changed?the ori seat should only have 3degree in the seat position, if u can change the position like a modern car, then it is not original. the stitches and the spring etc too!

then ask if u can pull the back seats those are the place where people forgot to check for rust.

what else...humm..the brakes..if 1.6 u need a disc brake to pass puspakom...

can't really think of more..

Well, the answer is 1 and 6.
6 as in , weekend driver.
I like classic cars, but the mini cooper is too small for me.

As for the car I'm looking at.
The owner bought the car in Feb 69.

Engine is 1.3.
All the original parts are with him, but he swapped out the alternator, pulley with graduations and distributor for better ones. The originals are still working though.

The original gearbox and engine are still mated to the car.
So it's 1.3-1.3, did check the engine, not the gearbox.

The seats are confirmed original, they match the fabric on the doors and are dirty.

The brakes are drum brakes - confirmed.
Original wheel hubs are all here. Basically the uncle takes good care of the car, just minor knocks over the years. And the driver side door is drooping as the pins are worn. He did tell me these.

He has not changed anything besides what I mentioned above, and also the indicator lever. Besides these, the only things he added are floormats.

He did repaint the car back in 1996.

He's only selling it because my parents and him are long time friends and last time I asked if he wanted to sell. But he didn't. Now his children not interested in driving it, so now he is okay with selling.

I use a mamiya C330F.
*

ahh...C330f...i like it, but i heard it's heavy? well i guess not as heavy as my RB sad.gif

Anyway back to your car...
from your description, i guess it's really a worth to invest.since u like it, and it has a track record that u know (u already can confirmed no major accident) try ask the owner where/who is his frequent workshop. are u in KL?

drum brakes are ok for 1.3, no issue in puspakom. more on personal driving experience. i drove drum before too, i just don't brake that well. but if u're not like me (always try to max the speed) drum should do just well. but note that drum needs a fair bit of braking distance if u do cruise above 80kmh. not to boast that disc is good, infact, discs are not really good to if u're not able to "manually ABS" it.i've had a few near miss for stomping the brake hard because even the front brakes, the back swirl and your car basically lose traction at that moment. so the practice for double or even triple steps on braking still applies on both drum n discs in beetle.

lastly,  would say, go with your heart. since u think it's all ori, and if u like it, your heart will tells u what to do.

IMO, beetle is not good for wedding, unless u get (or make it) a soft top/rag top/ topless.
do notice that the beetle is a 2door saloon and the rear is damn pack. unless u're saying let the groom drive and bride sit beside.but that hardly happens.
so if renting for wedding,u might wana find a kombi, or a safari, which is seriously pricey. or else occasionally u can rent your beetle for advertisement, mtv etc.
my beetle was featured in an MTV smile.gif
