I've just recently built a custom WC for i7 4790K on Asus Z97 system. The WC loop cools both the CPU and GPU. Now here is the issue:

- For CPU, the idle temp was around 35c, but whenever I tried to run Prime95 28.5 small FFT test, the CPU would go over 90c in split seconds. Blend mode was slightly better but still hovers around 80c. XTU stress test was around 70c.
- For GPU, the idle temp was also around 35c, and never went above 70c while running GPU benchmark software like 3D Mark.
- An hour of gaming (Wolfenstein New Order) the CPU and GPU also never went above 70c (pump @30%, rad fans @800rpm)
Note: Ambient temperature is 29c; EK WB blocks; 360rad; 18W DDC PWM (@100% for benchmark/testing).

Anyone with 4790K encountered this heat issue? What is the temperature they get from running Prime95 28.5 (small FFT & Blend) regardless it is air- or water-cooled?

I think you would need additional radiator in order to cool both cpu and gpu in one single loop. As they output quite a big amount of heat

Btw what is your gpu model?

Actually I have a 120rad between the GPU and the reservoir. But the GPU is idling while running Prime95, so I assume the overall WC loop is fine.

only 120mm rad? AIO or custom water cooling set?

a 360mm and a 120mm rad. Water temperature was not over 40c while running the tests. GPU was idling.
However, I would appreciate if anyone with 4790K can give me the temperature while running prime95 28.5 in any kind of cooling.

Radiator wise, you already have more radiator space. What GPU do you have? The "never went above 70c" sound the GPU didn't get proper cooling which mean the CPU may also didn't get proper cooling too. The GPU should be around 50s Celsius max when benching. If you didn't run fans in push-pull, you should run the fans at 1200 RPM at least to get best performance.

Try increase fans to max & re-run the prime/bench & record the temp. If the temps still high, then you probably need to re-seat blocks on the CPU & GPU. Then lower the fans speed until you find sweet spot between performance vs. noise. You also want to adjust pump speed & test.

Did you overclock the CPU? What's the vCore and speed?

gpu thats hot dude. normally in our weather full wc proper rad etc ( which u have enough).. 50C. aircond 40C.
never seen above 60 on the hottest of day unless ure room has no ventilation etc.

Only turbo boost to 4.40GHz, vCore at 4G was at 1.20V, and was 1.30V when TB 4.4G (that was too much, so I've forced it at 1.20V max now).

I've tested on another 4790K on Noctua NH-C14 on Prime95 28.5 with similar result, i.e. the temperature will shoot up to Tmax in seconds for small FFT tests. And I'm not alone as I've also read many articles saying that it was due to Prime 28.5 utilizing Intel's AVX. So I'll leave it be at the moment regarding temperature with Prime95 28.5.

How did you get your 970GTX to be at 40C on full load? That's about 20C delta!

its the gpu heat is what we are mainly concern.

wc seriously wont be that high 50s on no ac and 40s with ac.
with 970 should be even lower as most 970 on aircooling half fan speed only 50's

take a pic of ure rig

gpu blocks has a large die and wc is very efficient in taking out heat compared to cpu. Ure 4790k has a small die and a gunk under the heatsink.
U can test it ureself on full prime.. u wont feel much heat from ure rads.

I just recently done building a 4790k water cooling pc with xt240 rad. I am able to clock it to 4.7Ghz at Vcore 1.245V (not too sure because done it weeks ago) . Run prime 95 for hours with no errors. Max temp get was 87 but remain around 82 during prime95. But I was running my pump (ek D4) at full speed all the time. I would say u can try to adjust ur pump speed and give it a try again. running 2 rads with pump speed of 30% might be not strong enough. Just my guessing.

PS: dont shoot me if I said anything wrong tongue.gif

good luck and have a nice day!

Which prime95 version did you use? Did you test it on "Small FFTs"?
I will probably dismantle the loop this weekend and test one by one.

My spec is same as ur, set to OC at 4.40GHz 24/7, vCore 1.23 but I dun get high temp unless I'm rendering and that also dun reached ur temp.
Air-cooled Noctua NH-C15.

Like cstkl1 said best u take a picture of ur rig, for us to understand ur high heat problem on the CPU.
