Hai otai-otai,

I've been reading this thread and few previous version of this thread, how unlucky I've never known the existence of this thread before Haha, but at least I knew it know. There are some experience, info and even job opportunities were shared here that is really useful for other people and of course to me smile.gif

I wanna ask otai-otai's advice, I am currently on my final semester of my studies in Civil Engineering at UTP. Been to internship with UMW Petrodril, doing workover operation which I never been exposed before, learnt from scratch slowly (I'm not a fast learner tho tongue.gif) until one day I've given opportunity to lead and be the acting Project Engineer (because I'm still intern can't be Project Engineer) for PVD-CLJOC project at Vietnam for Cuu Long Workover campaign. The company sponsored me to do OPITO BOSIET and I've been to offshore to have an exposure on the operations. During my time at offshore I get to know and meet my seniors that is currently undergoing ARD Program with PETRONAS. I asked and they shared their experience. So I found my interest in this drilling sector (although workover not very or too drilling).

My question is:
- Which company would be good enough for me to become a drilling engineer for my stepping stone?
- Is it possible for me to join the ARD program (I'm CVE student, and not PET sponsored)
- Or it would be better if I just join Structural Consultant companies (e.g. Teaching, Aker, RNZ and etc. ?)

I've already started job hunting and planning to go to companies to submit my cv by hand next week.

Expected to grad on May this year.

Would appreciate if otai-otai can give some advice and insight or maybe share a little bit of your experience.

Thanks a lot in advance :>

My first question would be - are you want to become a jack of all trades or wanted to be specific in one particular skillset?
*
I would love to be a specialist in one particular area, which would be specific in one particular skill set smile.gif

In that case I cannot assist you more. I am good being a generalist. Minta maaf dan selamat hari raya maaf zahir dan batin.
*
Haha if like that, as a generalist, what would you suggest? Actually I'm in dilemma either joining offshore structure companies or drilling companies. But then since now the market is not that good, I just try to apply all and be thankful for any offer that I might got (if there is) but, for example, if I would go for drilling, which company would suit me as my stepping stone? And if other way around, other than Technip, Aker and RNZ, is there any other companies that do offshore structure design (engineering)?

Thanks in advance smile.gif

You already mention a very important key point - market is not good.

You want to join Aker Technip RNZ but they are optimizing manpower right now. Project backlog is very less in this tough time.

Kalau aku nak cari pengalaman berharga aku lebih rela join subcon buat plant turnaround and shutdown at Kerteh, Gebeng, Gurun, Pasir Gudang, Bintulu, Miri, Labuan dan Sipitang.

Tapi masalahnya sanggup ke nak starting gaji 1.5k per month? Aku berani potong tangan semua kat /k/ sini tak mau. Semua nak company stability, working environment cantik, tanak kerja stress...

Reality check. Sekarang kerja permanent ka contract ka peluang kena VSS and MSS tetap ada in O&G. Kau nak stability? Tunggu kau ada title manager depan pangkal nama kau.
*
So true. Betul tu bro. But yeah, that's the reality now. Fresh grads banyak, competition pun banyak, supply is more than the industry needs. Just have to double up the effort finding and can't be very choosy lah.

Even tak sanggup, tapi mungkin there's another option for me kan, better than menganggur. Thanks for the suggestion tho. biggrin.gif

When i was with UMW, we had 4 interns (utp students) attached in shipyard, batam island to learn and take part in the  construction of drilling rigs. something that not every interns have a chance to experience it.

back to your case, why not get in touch back with your supervisor in umw petrodrill and secure the job over there?

below some profile from petrodrill and now involve in real drilling operations.

https://www.linkedin.com/pub/engr-khairul-a...7?trk=pub-pbmap

For DE, as a fresh grads you alwayd can send your application to those operating companies. no harm for trying.

same goes to engineering line (piping, mechanical, structure etc)..

my senior colleague (he was s civil eng graduate) which same with me in the trainee program now is a rig manager...one year older than me...

best of luck...dont restrict yourself and send as many as application you can....
*
Bro Meonkutu11,

Thanks for the advise. Which UMW you have been with? Yeah I might try get back there, try to gain some experience and get myself prepared, by the time the economy goes up and get well, kalau ada rezeki, will try my luck elsewhere. But I've heard UMW Oil & Gas had freeze to take more engineers. Nvm, I'll just try.

Thanks again bro, really appreciate it :>

Malaysia based O&G consultants with offshore structures design capability; Technip, RNZ, Aker, Worley, MMC, Wood Mustang, Amec FW, ATCPE (new player).

SBM Offshore in floater related design.

Overdick specialized in special structures and Naval Arch.

Thanks bro for the suggestion, I've checked and there is opening for junior engineer from Wood Mustang which I've never heard before. Really glad to know that Haha.

But I couldn't find ATCPE, may I know what ATCPE stands for?

QUOTE(thoyol @ Mar 9 2015, 09:26 AM)
why should I hire you as a Drilling Engineer if I can hire a Petroleum Engineer graduates to be one??
*
"Because I've proven that I manage to learn and cover many things within short term (during my internship) Never been exposed to any drilling related things, been to different field of studies. Very minimum knowledge and can't barely identify those things back then, learnt so many things from scratch. Until the company given me trust to lead one of their international project. Thus, which shows my commitment, enthusiasm, interest, capabilities in this field. And I believe this trait will and should prolonged and may benefit to the organisation (company)"

Okay tak bro I answer like this if they asked me? Haha

ATCPE stand for Armada TCPE Sdn Bhd.

Why must be drilling to earn good money in O&G?????? Asyik2 nak kerja driller. Other profession can earn money much more better than driller. Aku punya gaji lagi besar dari entry level driller lulz.

Bengang aku.
*
Terima kasih lagi bro! biggrin.gif

Haha bukan sebab good money je bro for me. Well, I found interest to go for drilling, sebab tu try to find my way to go to drilling. Plus, quite envy with those DE that I've met, shared their experience. Before masuk belajar dulu tak pernah orang cerita pun and taktau pun pasal ni, dah terlajak amek Civil, and then found apa yang minat, tu yang try to find way nak kerja dengan apa yang aku minat bro smile.gif

I was with UMW Offshore Drilling (previously known as UMW Standard Drilling Sdn Bhd). I was involved in new building of NAGA 2 & NAGA 3.
*
Haaa, I see. Now NAGA 6 already kan. And yeah so thankful masuk UMW, they gave lot exposure to their interns. Send them to offshore, overseas and etc. Hard to find other companies provide such privilege. Btw, tak sempat jumpa Adzmirs dengan Jamel, diorang berhenti few weeks before I join UMW.

QUOTE(thoyol @ Mar 9 2015, 02:57 PM)
good answers! smile.gif

Well Thanks for asking bro, at least dah ada idea nak jawab apa Haha. Never thought that kind of question.

Macam mana ko tau ko minat? kalau org cakap jadi geotechnical engineer / geologist gaji bapak besar..mesti ko minat jugak kan?
*
Macam mana tau minat? hmm.gif
1. Belajar senang masuk, senang ingat
2. Eager to know more
3. Started to read about it since then (hakikatnya tak minat membaca)
4. Get to know some people from that field and suka dengar experience diorang
5. Dan lain2

Well for geotech engineer, In my studies pun there are geology and geotechnical courses. Lecturer pun from the field (ex geotech engineer w/ petronas). And most of the student pun well aware the pay pun quite okay (don't know lah more ke less than DE) but still belajar susah masuk, lazy to explore more dan lain2. So that's about it Haha biggrin.gif

I'm looking for a potential candidate to participate in our engineer trainee program. Engineering graduates with a good grade. Recently graduate or has 1-2 years experience. Knowledge of drilling rigs and offshore would be an advantage.

PM me your detail and experience. I will explain further about the program. I need someone that can work along with roustabout and roughneck, not a bossy type of people and really want to learn while working.
Goodluck and Thanks.
