Hi guys,

I have been a silent reader for months now, have read all the threads and just wanna thank you guys for sharing valuable tips and advice.

I have a question here. If I want to do computational fluid dynamics, is there a place for that in O&G specifically upstream? Maybe mud engineer, or drilling fluids? Your response is appreciated. Thanks!

Fingers crossed I don't bomb this opportunity lads!

I still have Inpex pending and might have secured an offer at Snowy Hydro though. Not good, too many choices.

All the best! Hopefully my career will follow a similar path biggrin.gif

Hi, some updates and sharing smile.gif

ExxonMobil hiring fresh grads... in fact my friends and I just had interviews with their engineers today for the 001-Inexperienced positions (Mechanical/Chemical Engineer grads)

I was interviewed for the Mech Eng position, from what the Exxon guy (American, cant remember his name) told me it seems like they mostly need design engineers for static equipments. If you get hired, you will be travelling a lot to other countries.

http://jobsadvertog.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/exxonmobil.html

More jobs can be found here.. Petronas also hiring, but experienced hires only I think.

Yang bercukur,

QUOTE(thpace @ Mar 31 2015, 01:59 AM)
when did you apply for the position and they start calling for interview?
*
Can't help you on this... I didn't 'apply'. What I did was, I sent my CV to UKEC-Graduan career fair website. The career fair committees were the ones responsible for forwarding all the CVs to participating companies. If the companies are interested, they'll call you up or send an email to arrange for an interview. I guess the time they take to call you depends on how many CVs they have to scan through. But if you want to apply, you can apply directly from Exxon's website. If you click on the link I gave, you will see a bunch of different job posts. Just choose any post you want and click on the link given below the post and it will lead you directly to Exxon's website. Sorry im not much of a help! sweat.gif

Clarkson ‘eyes idle rig market’

New rig gig: Jeremy Clarkson finally takes viewers' advice and heads for the high seas
Ousted Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson has reportedly set his sights on machinery of a different kind as he looks to take advantage of a lull in the oil market with a new television show aimed at racing idled rigs.

The car enthusiast, who was axed from the money-spinning BBC series after mistaking a television producer for an inquisitive energy journalist, plans to give cold-stacked semi-submersibles a new lease of life in a show set to be called BOP Gear.

The introverted and universally liked Clarkson, who helped turn a programme about four-wheeled transportation devices into something mildly interesting and not at all irritating, said the opportunity to “sex up” the depressed rig market was just too good to turn down.

“Oil companies and executives are just so bloody boring, it’s about time the public got to see what the industry’s machines are really like: man’s ultimate expression of his contempt for nature, with an unmistakeable underlying phallocentrism,” said the broadcaster, writer and amateur pugilist.

Reports indicate Clarkson and a yet-to-be-named team of sidekicks plan on enticing hard-up rig players by paying them a relative pittance to take laid-up semisubs on high-speed jaunts in far flung exotic locations, or the North Sea.

One early idea will see Clarkson pit his wits against a Greenpeace vessel in the Russian Arctic to see which one President Vladimir Putin finds more detestable.

Clarkson is also said to be planning another trip to Argentina, followed by an actual four-well drilling campaign in the Falklands.

“There’s a huge market out there for watching slow-moving, ageing, washed-up monsters that used to earn huge amounts of money for doing the same boring job day in, day out for years on end, before they ended up being dumped ignominiously on the scrap heap,” Clarkson said of himself.

“They just better serve bloody good hot food on these rigs, or I’m going to lose the plot,” the normally self-effacing life-long Buddhist added.

Clarkson is set to be joined on his new venture by any number of former Petrobras executives, US tight oil producers with quite a bit of time on their hands and North Korean President Kim Jong-un, the last to increase the show’s appeal to viewers.

It is unknown who has been enlisted to play The Rig Stig, although Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff is said to be dead keen for a prolonged stint of anonymity on any vessel that’s not sinking.

Just curious. Kenapa tak suka bila tanya pasal work environment? Is it because the asker indirectly want to know whether the job is stressful or not? hmm.gif

its more of a "when you don't have bargaining chips or leverage, stop being picky and just grab whatever you can get and bersyukur" sentiment
*
But what if the asker has already accepted the job and just want to know a little bit about his future workplace? I get that asking about money is uncalled for, especially in this o&g climate. But I don't see where asking about work environment counts as being tak bersyukur... Not trying to defend anyone, just an honest question

Well assuming he has already accepted the job, what difference does it make as he is gonna start the job anyway? A few unfavored opinions on the internet are gonna make him bail out?
*
Maybe he just wants to know more about his workplace before he sees it for himself? Stuff like what to expect or what to not expect. At least I know that I will ask stuff about my workplace before I start working. You can never be too prepared, I guess.

Pendapat general saya, lets assume you are about to enter a jungle and to explore pengalaman yang seram dan ngeri tapi bermanfaat untuk survival.

Ya aku dulu pun pernah jugak bertanya at previous thread lampau pasal working environment, tapi bila fikir balik, semua sama jer. Its about how well you play office politic actually. Aku jenis tak ada masa nak layan politic crap. I just want to do my job and get paid at the end of month.

Company tak pernah ada masalah. Environment pekerjaan tak best disebabkan perangai manusia kepala bana berdrama atas tiket office politic.

So, janganlah kita menjadi kepala bana dan tak perlu menggelabah biawak. Cool jer  cool2.gif
*
I see, thanks for the explanation. I think I understand, coz I also tend to avoid drama every time working in a group.

But I prefer the phrase "menggelabah tetek" over "menggelabah biawak" any day lol

yang atas jawapan dia yang bawah.
kahkahkah. if you really want to know the so called "work environment" you newbies should use a different word/phrasing. as said by many, kalau satu tempat kerja tuh described as villainous and tormenting as hell what you wanna decide?? biggrin.gif

dalam ramai2 kena layoff ni, syukur la maseh ada org ambil kerja, dalam ramai2 x mahu hire and yg dah berpengalaman pon dok gelabah and fikir pasal day to day work, career advancement, dll syukur la ada gak maseh nak ambil orang2 baru.

if ikutkan hati mau ja quit current tembok besar cina job, tapi jauh dalam hati harap ada la jugak guna bekalan exp sekejemput ni nanti down the years.

just out of curiosity, kalau intern without pay is a big deal??back then when i did mine, apa pon tarak i dapat cept some exp and a final grade of my internship which was "pass"  hmm.gif
*
If somebody told him that his workplace is villainous and tormenting as hell, then good. At least that somebody is actually helping him to know his workplace better, rather than suddenly branding him 'tak bersyukur' or 'thinking abt pay only', without proof.

I know that some questions like "how much they pay ah?" or "hi bros im electrical engineering graduate pls tell me how to get in o&g" are really annoying, but I think questions about work environment in specific companies are legit, especially if it hasn't been answered in this thread or previous threads. But that's just me, so feel free to disagree. Saya masih mentah, graduate pun belum lagi. Mana lah tahu saya salah kan biggrin.gif

This is getting a little bit old, maybe we should just put this matter to rest? sweat.gif

HR Professionals Discuss Hiring Strategies during Downturn

Several human resources (HR) and industry professionals shared insight and offered strategies on how to manage personnel during a turbulent world in oil and gas during Workforce NEXT’s Spring Summit Thursday. During one session focusing on working together as a leadership team from human resources, operational and businesses perspectives, speakers possessed more than 100 years of HR experience.

The dominant focus of the summit was on HR professionals and how they can not only survive the downturn, but snatch up top talent during the downturn. Presenters were in agreement that workforce reductions were expected to continue. But rather than focusing on the challenging aspects of the downturn on an HR level, Luis Jimenez, who possess extensive experience in the development and execution of human resources solutions, told the audience that employers should view the downturn as an opportunity to better align with management and operations.

Job cuts is a sensitive subject, especially among those individuals who have been the victims of recent layoffs. It’s also difficult for the companies tasked with determining whom to let go. The approach varies from company to company, but it’s always strategic.

“It’s a tough call – how to determine who stays and who goes,” said Marty Kunz, vice president of human resources for C&J Energy. “First, you look at your high performers and then you look at your strategic performers; not only the employees who do their jobs, but those who bring other skillsets to the table.”

People who wear multiple hats are more attractive to keep. Kunz offered an example that happened within his own staff.

“The first folks to get hit during a downturn in an HR department are recruiters,” he said.

Kunz had a female recruiter who he identified was not the best at her job, but she was extremely skilled in an HR software that was essential to the future of the company. For that reason, she was able to keep her job.

“It’s not always about traditional skills or who’s been there the longest,” Kunz said. “Sometimes, it’s about what they can bring to the table.”

Some key takeaways from the summit, which featured discussions on topics including the industry outlook, talent and leadership development, talent acquisition and organizational development, were:

The prevalence of “upskilling” – teaching employees additional skills to develop a highly-skilled staff
A shift in candidates moving from passive to active and more responsive
A need for soft skills in the industry
Recruiters being tasked on finding the “right fit” for an organization from the candidate pool
The need for continual training of new employees
“The war for talent is not over,” said Brett Kummer, global recruitment functional lead for Fluor. “It’s changing.”

That seemed to be the consensus.

And HR professionals across all sectors of the energy industry are adjusting existing strategies and implementing new strategies to keep their organizations staffed with highly skilled employees.
