Learn from field are better, atleast the skill is yours.
Well, without them, people can still discover oil. So don't talk like without them, nobody can drill oil out.
What type of IT system? They only need old school system to show them the flow, temperature and pressure. Do they need Windows 8 for tat?

Experience operators will know what to do.
As the engineers or who ever will just give orders. Once the rig are in operation, it can't be simply shutdown.
Some may say they are important, but  again they are just doing wayang kulit. That's the reason why O&G companies can simply cut down the man power especially those that are sitting in the office  is because all knows that most people in the office are taking blind salary.

You can work, but be prepared to leave. Don't be like those HP jokers that claim they are still Shell employees

Nope, in front of the world they are Shell employee, but the payroll is HP. I have a friend worked there before and jump ship to a company that really doing IT business, Microsoft. He was not happy to his previous employer, just "sell" them to HP and give almost nothing.

Kongsberg group is a very big, dispersed subsidiaries for many businesses.

10 years back, working in O&G are better than work as government servant.
But today, I can tell you that, no business will give you 100% security.

This downturn is the worst one. The market is being oversupplied with cheap Saudi crude.

Temporary? Everybody hope so, but then cost cutting initiatives are still on going and no sign of stopping at all
Considering this, even if the oil price rebounds back, don't expect it will be like last time.

Honeywell also has very wide range of businesses you can try. After all I think in the future everything will be IT based, be it controls, processes, or even documentations.

Why? Is matter of time.
Just look the world on O&G major players, they are keep on selling refineries and retrenching workers, be it contractor or permanent.

I think for IT to earn good money in O&G (beside SAP) you may try join software house Co. who develop and maintain high-end application for reservoir modeling, structural analysis, engineering design etc

To name a few - MCi Plus, CMMS, PlantSolution, Bentley etc

Oil is oversupplied now, so do manpower in O&G companies in this world.
They are taking this as excuse to cut down.

Trust me, even with oil price raised back, O&G companies won't simply take more staffs.
It takes 5-10 years to recover back when oil price raised back.
Some people just over optimistic, but again, can't blame them too much as their mentality still stuck at 90's. Like "HP" IT in Cyberjaya were the best example.
Died already and still saying they are still alive
Once you get a job, better learn as much as possible then you got another exit point even retrenched later on.

I don't feel like i am Shell's Employee. In the end you are just a HP Contractor working for shell only...
