Hello all, I just bought my hammies last week and I am sort of new in this stuff -> How often do you bath your hamster? And from what I know, hamster itself likes cleanliness, so from time to time, they will always groom themselves, so is it advisable to bath it often? thanks

Sand Bath? So, what I need to do is just buy the sand and put it in the bowl with some water. Then let the hamster inside and they will know what to do?

p.s:
01. What condition must the water be [ hot | cold ]
02. Is the sand commercially available? From what I managed to find out, Chinchilla sand is the best? Is it true?

Just a quick question. When I want to bath my hamsters, do I have to take them out one by one and put them in a bowl filled with sand so that they can take their bath? OR put the bowl inside the cage and let them handle the rest?

To my surprise, my hamster today gave birth to 6 pups.... biggrin.gif And I quickly separate the male and the female with her babies together. So, what are the stuffs that I must be aware of because I am new in this field? unsure.gif

Basically how long will it takes for the babies to grow up ? Like become an independent hamster that can eat and run on its own ? I need to tame them from young right ? Else, they will become fierce in the future unsure.gif

Then what's the purpose os separating the mother and her babies after around 1 month ? So, in the mean time, is it advisable to change the bedding as the babies is just 3 days old ? I wonder how to change if possible

Hey guys...
Wanna raise up a question here..

As our Sifu here said...most of the hamster should be kept alone in a cage...
It is always not advisable to keep 2 or more hamster together in a cage coz they will fight or etc....especially syrians..

So..my question here is....those petshop usually will put their hammies together in the big tank or aquarium...
So....how shud we explain this...

juz suddenly this thingy pass through my mind and i would like to ask...
no offence...  rclxms.gif  rclxms.gif

That is because they dont have enough space to put 1 hamster in 1 cage and usually during the daytime, the hamsters are not so active as they are nocturnals and will only be more active during night time. That is the time when the petshots are closed and the shopkeepers will not know whether the hamsters are fighting or not. I guess they just assume the hamsters didnt fight at all whistling.gif

Now my pups are 15 days old. So is it advisable to separate the mum with her babies ? Around after how long ? And how to recognise the pup's gender ? I guess I need to separate between the males and the females to avoid breeding in the future.

15 days too young to seperate lah.... Only seperate when they reach 30 days old. Coz the mother can teach some skills or habits to the babies. Seperate the males from the females when they reach 30 days old.

Ok... How to recognise the gender ? Based on the current pattern of the mummy and daddy; the female will have a round body with slightly visible dividing line, where as for the male will have a long body with clear dividing lines on the fur. Any other indication besides that ? I guess the pups are just too young to distinguish among themselves or I missed out the details ?

Hmmm... that is the first time I heard of that, but that is not an accurate way to tell the gender. You have to see the genitals. Close together means females and a gap between the genitals is a male. Females tend to have nipples while makes have a scent gland at the belly. The male's testicals would be visible when it is around 1 month old.

Can I say like this ? If there is something sticking out from the bottom oft he pups means that, it is a "he" ? If none, means is a "she". And I also notice that the back of the pups is like wearing a skirt. The same pattern with the current adult male but just that, it is a smaller version of skirt.

I managed to take some pictures from my 17 days old pups. So based on the pictures below, is it a male ? Kind of hard to see properly. And all my pups seem to have the below characteristics. hmm.gif
