Ok wad did u use to burn hole? the hanger is ? .. how much is the cost of the plastic tank+water bottle+food bowl+wheel=?
*
I use those erm... hot pens for electronic stuff... but you can use a hot nail.

Tank cost RM30 for a 1.5ft tank, water bottle from PetsWonderland RM8.90, food bowl RM4, Wheel Rm7.50.... so you kira lah, I got no calculator with me and I am too lazy to use my brain to count hahahah...

For picture of hanger, do go to the gerbil 1st page, Jaswwp got put a picture of her homade hanger for her bottle.

btw about the food, at first i thought delikate is good...at first i only feed my hammy with rm5 food...then when i kena marah by rena_blue i change la the food..hahaha...first time buy delikate i thought it is the best..cheap and many thing in it compare to the cheaper food...now..the true is delikate is not so good ma... rclxub.gif
hmm.gif i think after finished the last stock i want to change la to other brand..
*
LOL... really, those pics were lucky pics hahaha...

As said before, not many people know what is good hamster food. The best would be mixing a lot of grain and kibble along with fresh vegies and fruits for them.

Hairless tummy? If that is the case, your hamster has developed an allergy to wood shavings. Do change to corn cob or Breeder's Celect.

QUOTE(nugget @ Feb 8 2007, 04:24 PM)
hi all

wonder what type is the biggest among all hamster ?
*
Syrian is the biggest.... if take good care, can go up to 200g.

QUOTE(AlterFx @ Feb 8 2007, 04:25 PM)
herm.. about the sex things, now im sure both are male. Some website said, only saperate them if they start fighting *confuse*. so far i dont see any fight happend... anyway, i better get a new cage

dien : hello
*
Better seperate. Not all websites are correct. Is better you take advice from people who have really experienced syrians. When I was a young girl, I didn't know Syrians were solitary due to my friend who breeds them said they can live together if females. True, females can live together but only TEMPORARY.... you know what happened one day when they were full adults, they started fighting... I didn't notice coz they only do it while we humans sleep. The one day something terrible happen... one hamster was injured, a big hole in the stomach.

Now you do not want that to happen rite? So this is why better be safe than sorry... seperate them as soon as possible coz Syrians... well, they really do not like living together.

QUOTE(^MochI^ @ Feb 8 2007, 06:23 PM)
Crazy-> wads hotnail btw? whr to get them? is it those used for shouldering?

and can post some pics of ur hamster tank? so i can hav some idea on how it should be. thanks.
*
Hot nail... you take a normal nail people use to hammer on wood, find the biggest nail. Then you put it on fire until the nail become very hot and glow red red. Remember to not use your hands to hold the nail, use scissors or plyers to do it. Then you stick to the tank and burn loh. You can also use the shouldering tool... I actually bought one for burning tanks hahhah....

My tanks... aiyoh... really nothing to look at.... it only has a hanging bottle, a cup, wood shavings and hay and a toilet paper roll and a wheel. Hahah... I am a very simple person.

For me, I burn the hot nail using the fire from the stove... you can use candle but it would be slower lah.

Yes, you would need to measure properly where the bottle's sprout goes and where the wire that holds it should go. Hmmm... I just did that for my gerbils' tank... maybe I get a pic later.

Cage can be stressful to hamsters. They will bite cage bars when bored, get injuries from the metal bars and also by ingesting rust from the bars can create some health problems later. Don't want that to happen rite?

My anwser to you is in blue tongue.gif Really nice of you to get your wife such a lovely gift.

QUOTE(dildream @ Feb 8 2007, 11:16 PM)
Hi .. i am new here.. today i have gotten two hamster (winter white) for my wife as valentine gift.. the pet shop owner told me the basics of caring for it.. hope anyone out there kind enuff to answer me few questions..

1. Besides the basics of giving vitamins supplements and plenty of food and drinks.. what other needs does a hamster need?

Well, as long you have a water bottle and a food bowl full of food, then it is all good. Do give some fiberous food like rolled oats, dark green leafy vegies. You can give small treats like carrots, apples, pear... fruits that are crunchy and not citrius.

Also you can give them dried dog food or cat food as a supplement.

2. What kind of diseases that hamster are prone too and how u tell whether the hamster is sick or not ( of course that is the last thIng i wan to happen) ? this is just to play it safe just in case if things go bad.. immediate action can take to solve it.. afterall first time keeping hamsters as pet..

A hamster can get a few kinds of sickness. A hamster can get these:

over grown teeth
glaucoma
colds and flu
conjunctivitis
wet tail
skin infections
allergies from wood shavings
diabetes
parasite problems
tumours
cataracts

read this
http://www.hamsters-uk.org/modules.php?op=...rtid=147&page=1

3. how big the space required by hamster to live happily? Rite now the cute little ones are in Habitrail MiNi. Plan to extend their running spaces.. suggestions? I will be greatly apprreciate if anyone who are using Habitrail products share their picture of the set up for their love ones..

Erm, Habitrail Mini is a bit too small. The mini type is actually suitable for mice and roborovski hamsters... coz Winter Whites grow much bigger than Roborovskis and may have problems entering tunnles later when older. But you have already bought it.... would suggest you get hold of an extention tunnle and connect to another type of habitrail cage like Safari or Playground or Space Station.

You forgot to mention, males or females or both sexes? You do know they can breed non stop every 20 days rite?

4. Is there any ideal room temperature that i should watch out for the hamster
( Hamster heat tolerance )?

Hamsters do not tolerate heat well. Do not place hamsters outdoors... can get heat stroke and die.

Million thanks in advance... plan to increase their exercise area a.s.a.p. coz i think its a bit too small for two hamster especially the house but dunno what is the best for my wife's second lover haha kidding ....

QUOTE(babyfiona @ Feb 9 2007, 12:19 AM)
Hi dildream here again.. babyfiona is my wife.. lazy to sign in using my own nick..

thanks for all the advice.. really appreciate them...

the hamster that i get for my wife is dwarf winter white..

crazymouse : what is the maximum size they can grow up to? as you were          suggesting to connect to another cage? me planning to connect the accessories that is displayed on the box stages by stages linking them in a loop .. by then i guess should be enuff space for them to run about?

rite now my wife placed them in a room. normal room temperature. should i switched on the fan? I notice earlier today inside my room at the office, the hamster is like shivering maybe becoz of the air conditioning. So i dont really dare to suggest to my wife to put it inside air cond room at home.

btw.. anyone knows where to source for the best price item for habitrail products?

as for the gender.. hehe.. i forgot to ask the shop keeper how to differentiate the gender. Anyone mind telling me? according to the shop keeper.. the dwarf winter white is only 2-3 months old.. if my memory serves me correctly.. and nope i donno they multiply every 20 days

Thanks again for the info and help..
*
They do not grow very big... I would say lenght of 8cm but the width can be 4cm... but then it depends on how much your hamsters eat hahahah...

well, looping tubes isn't that great... coz it is so so troublesome to wash. Believe me, I experience that before... you would need lots of time to take everything apart and wash and disinfect the tubes and tunnels. Better just connect to another cage, less hassle.

Room temperature is ok. Actually, air cond is ok too. No, they are not shivering from cold.... sometimes hamsters shiver when they are afraid or feel danger. Again, the temperature cannot be low like 16C lah.... best is never below 24C... You will know hamsters are too hot when you notice that the mouth is very wet.

As for sex, do read the past few pages. I have already posted up pictures on how to see.

Habitrail prices are kinda fixed.... cheaper also is a few RM cheaper only. Go to Pet Family, they have a good variety.

If you have a male and female, best to seperate them. Do not worry. Hamsters prefer to live alone than in a pair.

oh... allergic ar? means can grow back 1 hor? mayb i really should try to change the bedding d... since this happen...

Yes, it can grow back. I got a hamster with similar problem last time. Was due to allergy to the wood shavings... so I changed brands and it grew back.

QUOTE(AlterFx @ Feb 9 2007, 11:04 AM)
Thanks for the advice guys happy.gif

ok.. let say if i wanna add few hamster, do i need 1 cage/hamster ?
*
Add a few? Better you just concentrate on your 2 Syrians.... you get more, means you must get more cages. I got 5 Syrians and they each got their own homes.... 2 cages and 3 storage box... already a lot of work. You get more, you will get headache only. And that for me are only my 5 Syrians.... a few of my Dwarfs live in single cages and tanks, some in pairs lah but better as single.

QUOTE(dildream @ Feb 9 2007, 12:03 PM)
crazy and blueheng : mealworms? same kind of mealworms for arowana? can hamster take superworms too?

earlier i was saying the hamster was shivering.. Now i understand why they shiver.. coz in office i placed them temporary somewhere in direct blow of the air conditioning and the temperature for the air cond is 16C with 2Hp .. my bad..

hamster can lau sai ar taking meal worms? btw all the tunnels piping out there izzit of a same size (diameter)..

some pic here as a sincere grats for all ur advice  biggrin.gif

my wife and me stayin in USJ 11.. anyone staying nearby also?
*
Yups, hamsters can take mealworms. I would say limit the intake... give like 3 times a week and each time let each hamster take 5 mealworms... that is good enough. You can also give steam or boiled chicken meat.

Wah, no wonder shiver lah... 16C is damn cold even for me hahahah...

Hamster lau sai if take too much fruits and vegie...

The tunnels and pipes... well, habitrail got 2 sizes. 1 is for the mini cage and another is for their standard cages.

From your pic, you got 1 Winter white agouti(the dark brown) and 1 Winter white sapphire(the greyish one). Looks about 2 months old. Anyway, have you tried sexing them yet? Look back at the last few pages for the info on how to sex hamsters.

Also, get another cage. Someone in the garage sale is selling off a very cheap Habitrail Space Station.

QUOTE(dildream @ Feb 10 2007, 12:35 AM)
i purchase the habitrail mini for rm 80.. donno whether its cheap or expensive.. but pet family in tmn megah ( just came back from there : having dinner there also ) it sell for more expensive..

after come back i cut off one of the lower section metal cage wire to fit in the bottle coz the original water bottle that comes together with it takes too much space.. now with the ori water bottle gone.. it looks more spacious

as you all know the water bottle nozzle unable to fit into the gap in between the wire..

now it works perfectly.. if i saw earlier someone's idea using the suction cup.. i would have also use it instead of cutting the metal.. well what is done is done..

assuming if i get the habitrail space station.. can i connect the two cage together?

i am  pretty much tempted to buy the loft for mini .. but my wife doesnt seems pleased with that idea.. after all its her hamster..

mealworms is the tiny size worms that i used to feed my aros when they are young. superworms (also worms ) but much bigger in size.. 10 x bigger if i am not mistaken.. mealworms 1 cup rm 1.. superworm 1 lunchbox rm 10.

now i feed my aros with crics and feeder fish.. c my wife likes the idea of feeding her hamsters worms or not first  tongue.gif

just check the garage sale.. the item sold ...  wub.gif  doh.gif  blush.gif
*
Oh yah, the mini comes witha ridiculous water feeder... got case where small hamsters drown before... I heard lah.

The other place where got sell more habitrail products would be Pet Safari... Pets Wonderland not so much since they now focus on Critter Trail(I hate this, I got 1). I prefer habitrail much better since easier to clean than critter trail.

Hahah... superworms, mine actually ate superworms before! But mealworms are better lah. They can also take crickets. You just cut off the jumping back legs and place the crickets in their cage for them to run and catch.

I noticed that you selling an aquarium... why not you buy some tubes and pipings and make an extention to the aquarium? So damn spacious, then maybe you can add 2 more hamsters, coz big space means less fighting.

QUOTE(the_catacombs @ Feb 10 2007, 04:32 AM)
boss boss and sifoo sifoo sekalian...

i'm going back hometown for a week during coming cny.... somehow i reluctant wanna take all my hamsters back because cny my house got many people... plus, i need to fetch my friends back as well...
all 4 of my hamsters has separate cages and they all occupy the whole back seat... thats why i wonder if can leave them unattended for a week....

of coz, i will give more food for them to last a week and make sure the bottle flows without dripping... can ar??.. i dont know any locals here in malacca willing to take care all 4 of my hamsters...
*
I have tried it before. Make sure your hamsters are indoors. Put 2 working water bottles for each hamster. Means you gotta buy loh, no choice. But this works lah. Make sure each hamster gets 2 bottles, and then place lots of food. Really a lot. If can, give dried catfood or dogfood also coz they can last long for hamsters.

I used to think hamsters live in snow areas like siberia or around russia there where it's cold? Can't even tolerate 16C ah? why wor?
*
Yah, they live in cold countries... but then it is not that cold all of the sudden mah. The hamsters born in colder climates have adapted well to the temperature there, the hamsters born here are adapted to our climate. If we suddenly give a drastic temperature change, it can cause them to be inactive all of the sudden, stop food intake and go into hibernation(for Syrian hamsters only). If we gradually give a temperature change, then it is different, you will notice the hamster change into winter coat, shedding the old fur and replacing with thicker whiter fur.

Just m,ix in a few handfuls. Normally I just pour whole bag but then that only happens when I make about 5kg of food for them.
