Hello, I own a hyundai/inokom matrix 1.8 and about to make a change of auto transmission fluid, ATF of my car. I just bought Toyota ATF Type-IV for 8 liters and Hyundai ATF filter because im going to flush. What I know, Hyundai SP-III is certificated ATF for hyundai vehicle, and also to my car. The salesman said that the Toyota Type-IV is better than Hyundai SP-III which the price is slightly higher. My question is, can i use Toyota ATF Type-IV for my car? I just bought it, mybe i can make a change back if this atf is no supported to my car. Thanks.

Typical malaysian salesman will see higher number = better performance/exceeds rating. I don't think Toyota T-IV is equivalent to Mitsubishi/Hyundai SP III, unless you bought some Universal synthetic ATF which stating can be used on SP III...

Getting Started

last time someone went to undertree workshop service his myvi with toyota atf and start having problem. since undertree workshop might assume perodua=toyota so use toyota oil should not be a problem. but perodua actually using sp iii if im not mistaken, while toyota using T-IV.

Thanks. no. different viscosity and specifications. there's Toyota Type-III which *MAY* be compatible. best if you find an ATF that specifically mentions SP-III compatibility.

toyota T-IV is totally different with Hyundai SPIII. and for perodua, it uses dexron II. so please use Hyundai SPIII or Mitsubishi Diaqueen or even easiest would be Proton SPIII.. most common gearbox failure is due to wrong ATF oil use. its not like engine oil where you can try different types of brands.

Thanks. when it comes to engine oil, i'm willing to try different brands. when come to auto-gearbox, i NEVER mess with them. Hyundai's gearbox is somewhat notorious of being 'sensitive'. i wouldn't risk using other manufacture's ATF on hyundai's gearbox. remember their gearbox is usually developed in-house aka made by hyundai gearbox (not sure about matrix though). not like toyota uses aisin, proton use punch, etc. so use back their own ATF is safer. why risk it?

Same issue for manual gearbox where GL4 is the specified gear oil to use, but mechanic will say GL5 is better and newer.. This post has been edited by Zack Styler: Jan 27 2015, 12:46 PM

QUOTE(vanhoe0 @ Jan 27 2015, 07:00 PM) So it's like trying to use a DDR3 ram in a DDR2 motherboard? yeap. ddr3 rams cant fit into ddr2 slots, so thats your idiot proofing there. for cars, no such case. if you're lucky no issue, unlucky, get a new gearbox (or long term damage that may not be detectable at all unless you do UOA)

Oh. Thanks. I already go to the shop where i bought Toyota ATF type-IV. I ask for change to hyundai SP-III because it is not suitable, i said to salesman. And he allowed me for a change. I'll will stick with Hyundai SP-III for further change, or any brand that is better and compatible with my car.
