Revealed: France has deployed over 8,000 troops in Africa (apparently without nobody noticing)

French troops conducting a patrol in a town in the CAR (Central African Republic)

France has played a pivotal — and at times unilateral — role in tackling extremism and civil unrest throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

This role is aided by France’s history of colonialism in Africa. Although a painful aspect of modern French history, the often-brutal and exploitative colonial project left France with a network of major military bases across the continent that survives into the present day.

France currently runs operation Barkhane and Operation Sangaris. The numbers of troops involved are as below:

Operation Barkhane (Mali, Mauretania, Burkina Faso & Chad): 3000 troops
Operation Sangaris (Central African Republic): 2000 troops

Also there are permanent French garrisons in these countries:
Guinea Gulf: 300 troops
Ivory Coast: 450 troops
Djibouti: 1900 troops
Gabon: 900 troops
Senegal: 300 troops

PH SAF massacre update (mostly from fb sos)

- Apparently it's a 200-men operation to detain some wanted individuals from a MILF base with arrest warrant
- The operation is not coordinated with other security forces, resulting in the lack of armoured transport or air support
- The MILF base not expecting the SAF approach beforehand thought they were under attack
- The MILF retaliates with BIFF insurgents joining the fight later, against the SAF
- BIFF spokesman says they have captured around 20 SAF operatives, killing around 100 others

major fubar I'd say

South Korea launches submarine command to counter North Korea threat

user posted image
SEOUL (Korea Herald/Asia News Network) - South Korea launched its submarine force command on Sunday to better cope with evolving maritime security challenges including those from North Korea, and potentially from outside the peninsula.

Incorporating its functions of underwater operations, training and education, and maintenance into the new command, the Navy seeks to conduct more integrated, efficient and stable submarine operations, Navy officials explained.

With the launch, the South has become the world's sixth country to have a submarine command. Traditional maritime powers such as the US, Japan, France, Britain and India have run submarine commands.

"The launch of the submarine force command is a clear display of our will to perfectly defend our East, West and South Seas through the enhanced quality and quantity of our submarine capabilities," the Navy said in a press release

Rather than ill-equipped i much prefer to say those Sand Army nations doesn't have spirit and gut to bear the casualties to win the war quite contrary with some Asiatic Nations like Vietnam, China, Japan and Korean. Iraq in 1991 have the largest armies backing up with the most modern equipment in Middle East, with more than 4000 MBTs, 2000 IFV, 600 jet fighter and more than 1 million armies.

I think, European and American  know better about Ivan and their stubbornness, beside their modern equipment Ivan sure have the gut to spill the blood till the last person.

low moral and no reason to fight... strong countries are back by strong gov and believe whether it comes from brainwashing or an ideal.. iraq also have sectarian divide... iran worships ayatollah, north korea with kim... as for vietnam, it wasnt really an ideology war unlike in china's civil war... it was viewed as a foreign invasion

russian is not happy because US is the main culprit for the ukraine unrest and wanted to join EU. Basically, US want to enter ukraine to get as close as to russian backyard

EU does not want to play that game but US went ahead and now things got so out of hand that US just want to wash their hand and EU have to bare it
*
i think the agreement was US to leave former warsaw nations n bordering countries alone.. instead US want to build d missile shield at russia's backyard... it would be the same as the cuban missile crisis

Lelong: Soviet-era tank anyone? Serbia auctions off army surplus

user posted image

The Serbian army on Monday (Feb 9) announced a fire sale of military surplus, including a fleet of Soviet-era tanks and thousands of rocket launchers, in order to raise funds for new equipment.

BELGRADE: The Serbian army on Monday (Feb 9) announced a fire sale of military surplus, including a fleet of Soviet-era tanks and thousands of rocket launchers, in order to raise funds for new equipment.

The defence ministry in Belgrade launched the tender to sell 282 T-55 tanks, 68 armoured personnel carriers and 1,283 guns of different types and calibre to raise money "exclusively for development, research and purchase of modern weapons."

But not any weekend enthusiast hankering to create a garage arsenal overnight will be able to bid for material on the block. "Companies licensed for arms trade can contact the ministry to obtain information on the status of weapons that are for sale," the ministry noted in a statement published on its website.

Also listed for sale to arms professionals are 16,780 pistols, 3,500 automatic rifles, 5,200 rocket launchers, more than 115,000 7.6 millimetre and 12.7 millimetre bullets and 120,000 rifle grenades.

The military did not put a value on the weaponry nor say how much it hoped to raise in the auction. The novel bid to raise funding for upgrading Serbia's arsenal is the latest in a series of moves to modernise the nation's army.

The Balkans country abolished compulsory military service in 2011. The transition to a fully professional army of 30,000 troops ended a long tradition of compulsory service, which was very popular until the 1990s wars that tore the former Yugoslavia apart.

In 2006, Serbia joined NATO's Partnership for Peace (PfP) cooperation and security programme, and despite maintaining close ties to Russia, adopted a policy of military neutrality the following year.

Pro-Russian separatists attempt to reduce Debaltsevo 'cauldron', deploys super-heavy artillery guns

After very much cutting off Debaltsevo from the rest of the Ukrainian government frontline, pro-Russian separatists bring super-heavy artillery pieces in an attempt to reduce the salient by heavy shelling. Amateur cameras have recorded a squadron of two 2S7 "Pion" 203mm heavy artillery guns at an area claimed as Makeevka, in the Donetsk district:

Spanish foreign minister: EU has lost 21 Billion Euros due to lost trade with Russia caused by US-led sanctions
US seems perfectly willing to screw over the EU just to piss off Russia. Hope EU politicians grow some balls and work about their own interests rather than US interests. The simple fact is Europe cannot survive without Russia. If the EU tanks over and sinks because of US vendetta to Moscow, US won't be too much affected by the after-effects, hope EU sees that fact before it's too late.
*
US is afraid of a strong EU, the strongest union of states is US and to a certain extent next is china and EU.. EU's GDP is bigger than US and if EU unite the world would have another super power to counter US. Heading EU are germany, france that most of the time dont follow US' decisions, not forgetting in 30-50 years time EU would be in the hands of a muslim majority which posses a treat to US.

Amid the war games, Washington and Bangkok keep a tense distance

user posted image

Thailand is one of the United States' oldest allies in Asia, but relations between the two governments have soured since a military coup in Bangkok last year.

BANGKOK: The Cobra Gold annual military exercise is supposed to showcase the historic relations between Thailand and the United States, but ongoing diplomatic tension has clouded the annual war games.

In January, Thailand accused the US of interfering in its internal affairs after a senior US official's meeting with ousted former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and his call for a swift return of democracy.

The same call was repeated at the start of the annual multinational military exercise Cobra Gold, which kicked off in Thailand on Monday (Feb 9).

“A senior US envoy recently visiting Thailand made clear our unwavering friendship and support for the Thai people, as well as our hopes for the country to return to democracy as soon as possible, so we can restore our bilateral relationship to its fullest potential,” said Patrick Murphy, US Charge d’Affairs to Thailand.

Recently, the US State Department said that Washington will not fully reactivate its military alliance with Thailand until the country returns to civilian rule.

THAI-CHINESE TIES BOOSTED

The US has sent 3,600 troops to participate this year's exercise, down from 4,300 troops last year.

Experts say Washington's pressure on the Thai military may not result in a quick return to democracy, but could see a closer relationship forged between Bangkok and Beijing. “If we don’t have this kind of American pressure, I think Thai-Chinese relations were going to be moving at a gradual, step-by-step pace," said Dr Prapat Thepchatree, Director of the Center for ASEAN Studies, Thammasat University. "But because of this American pressure, it kind of hastens the process."

In December last year, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has granted Beijing a major concession in building new railways, forging closer economic ties.

old cobra gold

However, some Thai diplomats such as Mr Kasit Piromya, a former foreign minister, are worried about the military government's approach.

“I think the diplomatic finesse of Thailand is to be able to have respective relations with different major players. One could prioritise what type of activities we will do with the Chinese, with India, with Indonesia, and with the Americans. It does not have to be the same. It is not the sort of jilted lever that you rejected one to opt for the other," he said.

Others also see the Thai-US relations changing over the long term.

“I don’t think their interests coincide. I think the US is (still) focusing almost entirely on the Middle East and Thailand is focusing on problems within its own borders,” said Dr Eugene Jones from the Department of Social Sciences, Mahidol University International College.
