before this im using h97m-itx/ac, no problem regarding this..
I still think the issue about the standard RAM placement.
As above, you will see that the 1st PCIE slot is full size (common practice for mATX mobo). If you take a look clearly, the RAM slots just behind the top screws hole.
For your previous board, it's RAM is place same distant as if the top screws hole, hence more clearance.

They can I think. Each motherboard has different layout.
Moreover, some models even don't have "openable" bottom or top latches for their DIMM(RAM) Slots. By using something like this, it save a little bit more spaces. Maybe around 3-5mm, which is enough for a screw cap to fit through. Example: ASUS P8P67 Pro, RAM Slots Top Latches are "openable", bottom latches aren't.
Yup, you are right, the most practical solution available now is single side latching RAM.

Intel's X99 chipset used to be represented by a long line of huge and bulky EATX or ATX motherboards, because the CPU, chipset, memory and whole layout required an extra large PCB to contain the extreme performance. But that was all yesterday's history. Now ASRock's research and development team has worked out a way to defy logics, and have built an incredibly small mini-ITX form factor motherboard with Intel® X99 chipset's extremely huge performance. Hence the world's first and only mini-ITX X99 chipset motherboard – ASRock X99E-ITX/ac is born!
