WC frequently for the time being. it is really depending on your driftwood tan level. it can be a month, or a year.

also, you can use activated carbon to help expedite the process.

Won't boiling lowers the lifespan of the wood itself?

kazar : if you have a large steel pot, boil it. else, just keep doing WC. btw, it will be there for a few weeks. it wont kill your fishes anyway. just unsightly for a few weeks.

Thank for your suggestion, maybe i soak it for another week. My driftwood not that big only about 20cm.

it depends wat wood u got. most of the shops stocks driftwood which will not rot under water. plus, you are not at riverside situation where there is tide (water level up and down every day), so the wood does not get drenched then dried then drecnched etc and ultimately disintegrates...

boiling driftwoods were done before by many people and so far no one reported any lowered liefspan.

my driftwood was bought at LFS and i soaked it in a pail for like 1 day then directly into the fish tank. tannins (brown water) was around for about 4 weeks. i only do WC weekly with ghost shrimp and other smaller fishes in there. seems they don't mind the tannins in the water. this was like 5 years ago... tank still ongoing smile.gif

hope the above clarifies. happy aqua scaping!

You have to decide low level or hi tech.

Low level means no co2.

And the types of plant you want to put into ur tank. And also fish.

For the subtrates, last time i check it still around rm 100 per bag. (+/-)

Fertilizers, it depends on u, dry ferts or diy.

What type of filter do u have??

Dont forget about decorations,
Air stone(s)
Driftwood.
If u need any.

Roughly the figure shouldnt be more than 1k.

Mostly around 500. For a start.

Coz u will need to do the fishless cycle for a few weeks. To stabilize ur water and filter.

And be sure to select ur filter carefully. You will meed bio filter.

Speaking of lighting, have any of you heard about this light? any reviews? seems like it's a generic/OEm for expensive LED lights out there. http://www.11street.my/productdetail/under...ht-smd-32595191

Hey guys, this is my planted tank. Started with dry start method back in november last year, failed miserably. This is my 3rd rescape. Learned a lot each time my tank fails. sweat.gif

tank size: 5 gallon tank fluval spec V
substrate: amazonia only, didnt cycle tank, didnt do anything just pour and go.
co2 pressurized
Chiller 200W peltier type to keep my tank 25C <--- needed to since my tank area is directly facing west, temperature fluctuate up to 32C whenever it's sunny time.
modified ei dosing, based on my whims. Still learning

Anyway the first pic was back in 8th Feb hair algae explosion, did a lot of noob mistakes and made things worse.

23th Feb Decided to use anti algae medicament, kill them all first then plant new plants to stabilize the tank, lastly will stop the anti algae.

Last pic is 19th March, a week after major water change, algae medication stopped 1 week before water change. surprisingly once the tank stabilize algae did not bloom again. I got occasional hair algae after subsequent water change but not severe, added 2 amano shrimp last week which cleared every hair algae in the tank. I think i won the algae war. lol rclxms.gif

Well done smile.gif It's a great joy to win an algae war and you will learn along the way to treat different type of algae.
