80c at 100% fan speed do sound pretty ridiculous. You tried repaste and clean it before?

Since now it is at RMA, you can either wait for it come back and see if they helped you solved it. If not then you can consider a new card or 3rd party GPU cooler.

GTX960 really don't sound like a big upgrade to GTX760 apart from the recent kepler gimping fiasco.

If I am you, I will rather save more till budget enough for a GTX970. Or worse come to worse, wait till Nvidia's Pascal is launched then only decide. Nvidia's tradition is to launch a low mid end card with new architecture first. Combined with die shrink and new architecture, who knows GTX1050TI (?) may be just as powerful as GTX960 for a cheaper price?

As for RMA service of warranty, I place my bad that 9/10 people here will tell you it sucks, while another 1 had yet tried with it.

For the memory bus, it isn't much of a big concern for the time being (pardon me as my knowledge on DX12 improvement is pretty limited, not sure the effect of bus width on it). GTX960 is designed for such a bus width as Nvidia is confident with their Maxwell (another thing is Nvidia is always pretty "cheapskate" and limited, they rarely give you overkill or "futureproof" specifications be it low end to high end), so in short it won't bother much or any. Another concern on 960 is the 2GB vs 4GB. For a mid end card, 2GB is still the more optimized one. Any settings which require higher than 2GB VRAM are usually result in bad sub 30FPS also, no point pump it that high.

LOL, it is pretty impossible to sell of 2 970 and get back the cash enough for 980TI. Even the launching retail price already say some story (650 bucks vs 2X 330bucks).

Except may be your 970 is high segment and you plan to settle for the cheapest 980TI available.

Pretty much expected.

What's worse will be if AMD's fiji really failed to detrone TitanX/980TI in term of specs/price, get ready for a "unofficial" price hike.

Theoretically, 980TI is not too overpriced but in fact some bang for bucks. It's performance is close to 970SLI.

But practically, it will be overpriced for being rare (supply and demand), and also local distributor's jackup and GST.

Again, I don't really expect a new architecture with new RAM and bundled with AIO to be priced below 650USD.

If you mean the Hawaii refresh, may be they can offer some competitive price for that.

As for it is sold out, yeah, the demand is sure there. There's people who eying on 980TI ever since the launch of 980, so it's no surprise. But on the other hand, many people still on the speculators side to decide only after AMD new cards are launched, those are the people which will jack up the demand and market price later.

I do find that they should optimize the fan profile a little. It is too easy to reach 80C yet the fan still under low RPM. But of course still prefer they cap the fan speed below 80% max. Anything more than that start sounds like a jet engine...

Yup, mine same model. Try crank up the fan speed to over 90% and you know what a jet sounds like

I not sure if it start throttle at 80C but it is the fan profile of the card to hit 80C that easily.

If given choice, I will prefer crank up the fan speed to keep it sub80.

I prefer bios level of fan control feel lazy and somewhat paranoid running GPU software like Afterburner or Firestorm behind my game...

As for the 2SMM disabled, don't tell me you expecting NVIDIA to launch 980TI with a full specs of TitanX and cost 350USD less, not?

If completely full specs of TitanX, later OEMs start tweak their cards and come out with 12GB VRAM version, and it will be officially a Titan killer with better price, better performance and better cooling...

But theoretically, GTX960 is just as same as its other Maxwell big brothers from 970 all the way to TX.

Unless Nvidia purposely/"accidentally"/"unwillingly" limiting it, GTX960 should get what his big brothers will get too.
