Huh, can you look on your motherboard physically for the model number. The one you see just now only reveals your i845GV chipset.

Your chipset is 845GV. So, P4TGV is the correct one.

Are your sure your motherboard is from BIOSTAR?

No, you need to use BIOS Flash utility to flash your BIOS with new data (.BIN) . Be careful and read instruction properly on how to use it to avoid you from "bricking" your BIOS and system. Most importantly, make sure you are connected to a stable mains power supply and wish that your house is not facing black-out while updating your BIOS. sweat.gif Close all anti-virus, anti-malware programs and other applications.

This one runs from Windows environment.

WARNING: Updating BIOS is not for everybody. If your motherboard is working okay, we do not recommend any BIOS update. Biostar is not responsible for any consequence as result of BIOS updates.

Read this first!

The previous link says that Biostar BIOS has the option to flash the BIOS while in the BIOS setting environment rather than in Windows environment. This is only true for recent motherboards but not for legacy motherboards.

Hi horcruxes,

Your minidump shows most (if not all) of your system crash was caused by hardware error (random memory and CPU error) and mostly during your Warcraft session.

Would like you to check your system and CPU temperature. You can view your temperature after any crash from your BIOS or your system monitoring software that came with your motherboard.

Also physically check to see if your motherboard have any leaking / bulging capacitor. See the link below to identify how leaking / bulging looks like,

Hi there, i had encountered pc sudden freeze and auto-restart randomly problems. Would like to have some opinion from you guys.

My pc rig is an old p4 system, 2.4ghz, mobo p4vmm2 elitegroup, ram 512+256mb apacer, AGP card ATI Radeon 9250 128mb 64bit.

Firstly, i had tested my ram. By plugging out the ram, let the system ran in 512mb for the first time, and 256mb for another time. However, the pc freeze and auto-restart problems still occured.

Secondly, i tested the graphic card, by plugging it out and let my system ran with integrated graphic on MOBO. Seem like the freeze and auto-restart still occured.

I had even defrag the HDD. Tested it with S.M.A.R.T. Seem like ok.

So, i suppect it is caused by the overheating of my CPU. So, i clean all the dust of the HSF and replace with some new thermal paste.
After that, I monitor the temperature change of my processor by EVEREST home edition. No-load average temperature is about 44-46oC, and full load temp is about 55-56oC. When the processor is at no-load, the freeze and auto-restart seem like not so obvious but still occuring randomly. However, when at full-load, the freeze and auto-restart happened significantly(freeze may occur from 1-10 minutes).

Finally, i switch on my air-cond in my room and let my pc run at full-load and monitor the temperature changes. The temperature went down a bit and maintain at about 53-54oC. But i can see that my pc running very smooth, with full-load running about 30 mins. After that, I switch off the air-cond and do some internet surfing while monitoring the temperature changes of my processor(47-48oC). About 20 minutes, the pc started to freeze again.....

So, you guys think that the freezing is caused by the overheating of processor or PSU???

Hi there horcruxes, very sorry for my late reply as i am AFK whole day.
Btw, tthm has already assist you on this issue and it will be wise for you to follow his instruction.

Hereby i attached the analysis from your BSOD debug result and hope you can have more understanding on it.

From analyzing your minidump 101008-05, the result shows that you have a corrupted 2bytes on your RAM which might cause your system to BSOD/Halt when paging processes runs through the corrupted 2bytes in your RAM. That could be one of the culprit for your BSOD.

Another issue that you need to take note is as mentioned by tthm regarding your CPU and overheating issue. Please monitor your temperature. You can maintain your system at good temperature by cleaning the dust around your CPU and RAM slot, that would reduce possibility dirt causing problem to your hardware operation.

From the dump i can see that you have try update your system to SP3 on dump 101008-05 but you restore to SP2 after you have BSOD again in SP3. But still, there are quite a number that is out of date including your LAN card driver. Please update it if you switches to SP3.

Thanks. Any further issue please post here to tthm, me or whoever come 1st.

@eclectice,
thanks for helping around. Your assitant is very much appreciated.

Having AVG uninstalled, avgtdix.sys issue solve, installing avast, you are having aswTdi.sys refers to "Safe! avast! TDI Filter Driver ALWIL Software avast! Antivirus System 4.7."
From this BSOD i can confirm that something has screw up the memory and causing the system to crash.

Referring back to the experience that eclectice has encountered and advice on you. Since you mentioned that you do not have wifi, but you do have hamachi right?
You install hamachi by yourself or it comes with your system?
I suggest you to uninstall hamachi for this time around as Hamachi itself is centrally-managed zero-configuration virtual private network (VPN) which has something to do with LAN
Further information please refer below link
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamachi
http://www.google.com.my/search?hl=en&q=Hamachi&meta=

Both avgtdix.sys and aswTdi.sys has some function of auto updating and might encounter the BSOD while attemting to update for latest definition.
Uninstall Hamachi and have a look on your system see if BSOD appear again.

P/S: I need your favor to look at your Event Viewer and post whatever error you see here.

Thanks

Hi there horcruxes, very sorry for my late reply as i am AFK whole day.
Btw, tthm has already assist you on this issue and it will be wise for you to follow his instruction.

Hereby i attached the analysis from your BSOD debug result and hope you can have more understanding on it.
Interpretation on Error:
Error on 0X8E: Driver/Hardware compatibility issue (Driver/BIOS update)
Error on 0x9C: Harware issue (Overheat on CPU/RAM) & Overclocking
Error on 0x50: Hardware issue (RAM/CPU L2 Cache/PCI card) & Driver/Software issue
Error on 0X7F: Hardware failure (RAM/GC RAM)
Error on 0xD1: Harware failure (RAM) & Damaged Pagefile.

You can maintain your system at good temperature by cleaning the dust around your CPU and RAM slot, that would reduce possibility dirt causing problem to your hardware operation.

tthm and i have made few suggestion above. We hope that you get it though. If you cant do it, we are helpless.

Would like you to check your system and CPU temperature. You can view your temperature after any crash from your BIOS or your system monitoring software that came with your motherboard.

Since you are newbie, those are the suggestion that we can made of for your understanding.

For your RAM, try plug it out, use a rubber to rub the gold area, then put it back again and run your system.

If you still not sure what to do, we would suggest you to send it to IT shop and seek for assistant there as for now, you already have clue on what is going on with your pc.

Thanks

You can PM me or you can upload it here since you mentioned it as a .txt file.

Bear in mind that sometimes BSOD analysis cannot be 100% guaranteed or you might say that i am not really professional yet to read the data and inteprete it.

It will goes like this. Sometimes the error is directly shown as the file mentioned by the debugger itself is the root cause of the crash. But in another condition like yours, its actually another factor that is trigerring the crash in your system. If in that kind of cases, basically we prefer use trial and error.

I consider myself as a beginner in debugging and there are lots of masters out there which are really pro in debugging BSOD and some even could read and understand the lines and number to help the victims overcome the issue.

What i am doing here is trying to help. Whether it successful or not it depends on luck sometimes besides the qualification and skills that i have to help you and other victim to solve the issue.

Sorry that at this moment i still not manage to solve your issue. Lets hope that my 2nd try can show you the path to success on overcoming your BSOD Crash.

Thanks

Hello, horcruxes.

I revisited your problem.

Microcode or microprogramming is like designing a "firmware" for microcontroller (MCU) or in this case, Intel CPU Pentium Prescott. There is a small size of programmable grid arrays (PGA) in Intel CPU Pentium Prescott. This "small" software (low-level coding), is emulating certain hardware functionality. Why Intel decided to create a microcode to emulate CPU hardware-level functionality is beyond my limited knowledge.

It seems that this microcode is unstable, maybe due to excessive heat which causing the memory area that stores this microcode to accidentally erase the microcode. That is why your crash reports keep showing zero-length CPU microcode bucket error. The memory area is quite volatile. Or, the way the user programs are using this microcode memory is triggering the crash.

QUOTE
Microcode updates are not stored permanently within the processor; they vanish when the power is cut, so every boot has to re-assert them.

....

If you have a Celeron with 256k Level 2 cache, or a Pentium 4 with over 1M of Level 2 cache, you have a processor that may be at risk.  In addition to this, if the revision level is less than 8 (in some cases 7; typically it will be 0) then you are definitely at risk.

.....

How do I get out alive?

There are two ways; one that allows you to uninstall SP2 and carry on as if nothing had happened, and another that lets you keep SP2, with one file out of use.

Disable Level 1 and Level 2 cache in CMOS

This will leave the system running so slowly, you will often think it's crashed!  Have faith; XP will load fine, and you will be able to go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Service Pack 2 from there.

Expect this to take some hours; when it's done, shut down the PC.  On the next boot, go back into CMOS setup (the magic keys to do that vary between PCs; Del, Ctl+Alt+Esc, Ctl+Alt+S, F1, F2 and F10 are good guesses), find your way to where you disabled the Level 1 and 2 cache last time, enable these again, save settings and quit.

This is exactly what I did (thanks Cari for the tip!) and it worked fine.

Rename away Update.sys

For best results, keep a copy of your old pre-SP2 Update.sys somewhere else before you install SP2.  To find the file, navigate Windows Explorer into your Windows base directory (typically C:\Windows), then into System32, then into Drivers.  You may have to change settings so that Windows Explorer actually shows you these things!

After you install SP2, and the system can't boot Windows anymore, etc. then fire up your maintenance OS, find the Update.sys file as described, and rename it away.  If you kept the old pre-SP2 copy, then copy that back in as Update.sys - that is currently how I'm running my test PC, and time will tell how well this works.

Note: Running XP, perhaps especially with SP2, with Prescott that isn't microcode-updated to revision 8 or better, is not the ideal situation.  You really should update BIOS so that it updates the Prescott processor properly, for the definitive fix!

The problem of instability occurs with Windows XP SP2.

I suggest you to update to Windows XP SP3 to alleviate the problem as I see you use Windows XP SP2 as evident in your crash reports.
