Hi, wanna ask for opinion,
is it okay to install thermal pads on the back of my r9 290?
i want to install thermal pads between the PCB and my aluminium backplate for my r9 290.. is this okay? if yes, anyone has experience with this?
*
My case example, I'm using EK waterblock together with EK aluminum back plate which come with thermal pad, there are 2 locations to put the thermal pad between the back of PCB and back plate, the backside of GPU core and vrm, these 2 components are generating heat of the graphic card.

wow thanks, i'll watch that brows.gif
oo, i think i'll only be putting thermal pads on vrm since my core is not covered by the backplate.. thanks for the input brows.gif
Edit:

hi guys, so this the back of my r9 290 tri-x http://images.hardwarecanucks.com/image//s...-SAPPHIRE-6.jpg
the place where I should put thermal pads is on the back of these vrm right? http://cdn.overclock.net/4/44/900x900px-LL...9172b_cool.jpeg

the vrm looks like those soldered parts on the back?

And do thermal pads size matters? or i can just buy a large pad and cut them using x-acto knife?
*
U need to stick backside of no 2, 2cm width will do

thanks for your precious advice!  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif  if compared to newer GTX 980 or 970, do you think 290X lightning will still be a good buy? especially compared with 970
*
To me is depends on the PCB & cooler design, for example if Gainward/Leadtek GTX970 vs 290x Lightning, i definitely will choose the latter, but if gigabyte windforce gtx 970 vs 290x lightning then i might choose the former. I personally like full length PCB & big cooler, it look great inside the casing (provided your casing has side window)

Not true. Now 1080p game also use 3.5gb and above. That is why NVidia con is found.

I believe by end of the year, 1080p full texture gaming need 6gb.
*
By end of the year 290x is outdated 380x/390x is become mainstream

Everything is destined to be obsolete~ even buying 380X, it will be obsolete in 2 years time. of coz it depend on ones sense of 'outdate-ness', 290X maybe replace with newer and more capable model, but it doesn't mean it will simply 'outdated' by my mean, I guess it still perform as high end card for at least 2 years . just like HD 7970, it still lives and staying relatively relevant till today by the name of R9 280X, i guess still no one will say 280X are obsolete by now right?

Personal view,,,
*
Of course, even a 7950 still running strong flex.gif

Its all depends on to what extent u can compromise with the graphic setting, to me i prefer everything set to ultra with 60fps

Same here, but since I'm not upgrading every year so i guess i cannot expect my card will perform like new gen after some time.  sad.gif  sad.gif  sad.gif

Another option for 290X 8GB, but unsure local distributor will bring in or not?

Think so.  sad.gif They don't want you to mess with their product. BTW, the vanilla 290x already phased out in our country.
*
Depends on manufacturer, certain brands (eg Gigabyte & Sapphire) do not have 'warranty void if remove' sticker on the screw hence if u carefully remove the default cooler without damage the vram & vrm's thermal tape it should be ok. However still recommend opt for non reference card because very hard to find aftermarket cooler suitable to replace reference card cooler unless u go for WC.

rly ah sweat.gif
i recently contacted sapphire inquiring about thermal pads size to place them between my r9 290 tri-x and my custom backplate..
And their reply was " we don't recommend adding/changing/modding hardware on our cards "
and said that even adding a backplate violate that... and risk of voiding warranty..
*
U ask them of course they will say so. I RMA my sapphire Tri-x no problem at all

No 8GB at that particular shop, if u want to get a refund, they max only can gimme back 75% of the value. So I dun think i have more choice.
*
That shop's business ethic is very bad, obviously it was not your fault, if they can't provide replacement should just refund.

Yes, I have heard of that. I have tested this card with some of my favourite games (Watch dogs, COD AW, World of tanks etc), so far so good.

PS: never let it went through stressing software like furmark tho

Used MSI afterburner to check with the VRM temp

4790K @ RM11xx?..why so expensive?

my ol gpu finally RIP..now using on board but reading comments here better wait for 300 series..although garage sale got r9 280X and r9 290 at RM650 to RM700 is quite tempting
