my advise is don't take the reference model.. even if it can be unlock, the heat and noise will still bugging you like crazy..
just take the 290 trix.. at that price, its a steal! the performance different is like 3-6% between 290 and 290x. overclock it a bit and you'll get 290x performance.

i once using 290 reference cooler in crossfire (oc with voltage bump a bit) and still can maintain temp below 80c no prob.. but need to use custom fan profile to increase fan usage up to 75%.. the noise?

reference model? whats your full pc spec?

its normal for reference model.. nothing much you can do about it. you can try underclock a bit to reduce its temp.. or just using custom fan profile like afterburner or trixx to increase its max fan usage. to be specific whats your processor model? that 20fps could be sign of cpu bottlenecking..

rm1.5k for 290x tri-x is not worth it. 290 cf are much more faster than single 290x. just get the 290 and you can easily overclock it to 290x performance.

my 290 cf are equipped with custom coolers.. so it becomes 2.5 slot gpu.. tri-x only take 2 slot.. still have headroom for cf config no prob. my experience so far with 290cf can maxed any game at 1080p (its kinda overkill for 1080p actually). but i think with your 1440p, a single 290 hard to maxed out all game especially the AAA one.. surely you need 290 CF

IMO better wait for new gen.. going from 7850 to r9 280\280x (same tier with 7970) is not a really big upgrade. or look for 2nd hand r9 290\290x in garage sales.

what case you're using? open bench? in short term, indeed can give you best cooling.. in long term could give you overheat problem due to clogged dust.. also small animals or insect may infest your system . try playing around with your case air flow setup.. with best air flow setup, your case temp will not be too much different compared to open case..
