Hi all, I would like to get advice from Sifu regarding my piano. I have a 20 year old piano that belongs to me and my sister. The thing is that we seldom play the piano anymore and I given the chance and the opportunity I would like to pick that hobby up again. The piano that we have is having some issue I.e jam keys as well as problems with the sustaining pedal. I have no idea how much would it take to repair the piano and I think it would be nearly as bad as overhaul my piano (or the condition of the piano is not a bad as I though). I would like to keep this piano i am not sure if overhaul would be worth it. Do you advice to overhaul or to purchase new one. Please help and advice. Thank you in advance all Sifu

what brand of the piano? the soundboard is generally made of solid wood that gets better with age but subjected to which whether u have taken care properly or not over the past 20 years. so if its a relatively good brand, yamaha etc that has been taken care of, i would rehaul it instead of buying a new one.

good piano cost a bomb nowadays, more over for a grand. i'm pretty sure a good rehaul is a good choice.

generally, all pianos (irregardless of brand) require periodic servicing and they are tuning & regulation.
tuning = correcting the pitch regulation = touch and uniform response of the action
in regulation there are 3 systems involved here, 1) action, 2) trap work (pedal) and 3) damper system.
in this case, your piano needs regulation. and, prior to regulation a technician will needs to check the condition of the action for badly worn parts due to aging or moth damage. if any one of it is not in good condition, the piano may not be able to properly regulated without some replacement of parts.
buying a piano is a major investment which deserves to be protected irregardless of brand. properly maintained piano will gives you the best sound and lifetime enjoyment to you and your family....

Happy New Year to you! First of foremost, piano is lifetime! If you have a beautiful German, English or European piano, it is worth to overhaul the piano. It is not necessary to be expensive to restore the piano. If the piano is still in a good condition, minor repairing would be good to let it run back. Usually get a technician to come over to check out your piano and they would do the whole checklist of the piano conditions for free, yet you only pay for tuning charges. PM me if you need my technician to come over and assist you. Thank you and have a great day!
