From what i understand, there are 2 endings. 1. The original ending is episode 25 and episode 26, which Shinji has killed Kaworu Nagisa (the last angel) and it became an odd-looking episode which depicted only the internal world of the hero Shinji Ikari. Although that was fulfilling for the main theme, the drama of the characters and further development of the Eva world were left unfinished as the story ended. 2. The End of Evangelion is a continuation of episode 26 due to popular demand, the ending is that Rei became the angel and the inevitable 3rd impact happened. Everyone dies except for Shinji and Asuka. There's alot of character development in the anime rather than action. the EVAs' core contains the soul of relatives close to the pilots  it is said that EVA 03 contains the soul of Touji's mom. |

Asuka suffers from the loss of her mother as well, arrogant and competitive. Rei is not a human at all, and she has no emotions (except with Gendou). Touji hates EVA because his sis was injured during the battles. |
